I would grade the University of Kentucky a “B.” The reason why I would give the University of Kentucky a “B” is because academically the University of Kentucky provides students with all the courses possible for many different majors. And I think this is a good aspect at the University because the students have multiple options to choose from when deciding on a major and their options are not limited. The University of Kentucky provides different programs that ANY student at UK can get involved in or participate in such as sororities and fraternities. I would say this aspect is alright at UK because it is very beneficial to be a part of program such as a frat or a sorority because they look good on transcripts and are helpful for future jobs. But I would also like to say some of these programs offered at UK that are just for males and females can be very exclusive with a lot of things that are going on around campus such as parties, dates, and participation. Something else that I enjoy about UK is the refurbished buildings; I enjoy having classes in the newer buildings like the Jacobs Science building because they are very nice and a lot of time and money was spent putting that building together for the University’s education. The University of Kentucky can improve by making EVERYONE on campus to feel welcomed to join anything. The reason I say this is because this campus isn’t that diverse compared to plenty of college campuses that I’ve been to. And ethnic students that are attending this school should feel more comfortable around campus to want to attend the same parties or even join the same sororities. There is a clear division whenever it comes social life here at the University of Kentucky, but I would say that’s one of the aspects that they NEED to improve on.

The most challenging assignment that I’ve ever had would have to be a mapping assignment for one of my core classes such as GEO 109 for example. This mapping assignment included figuring out how to map the state of Kentucky on a new QGIS software and adding specific details to make the map look a certain way. This assignment was challenging because I’m not that much of a technology person and in this GEO 109 course all we basically do is use technology for all our assignments. This assignment was challenging because I had to use a software that I haven’t ever used before until this course, and I had to learn how the software worked to complete my assignment properly for the class. I would say the most difficult part of this assignment was trying to figuring out how to download the images on the software; in other terms geocoding the images on QGIS to get a map of Kentucky on the software to start the assignment. The next part that I found challenging was there was a specific geotag that it had to be downloaded as before opening the images on the QGIS software. The images had to be saved as shapefiles so that the QGIS software would be able to read and open the pictures properly on the software. So far this semester the mapping assignment that I’ve had for my GEO 109 course has had to be the most challenging assignments that I’ve had thus far; because these mapping assignments involve a lot of technology techniques and a new software that I’ve never used before. Overall, this mapping assignment was very challenging to do at first but now that I have practiced with the software and have been given mapping assignments on here it’s now a little easier to work with now that I kind of know what I’m doing.

I would say my best tips for studying would be to review the material that is covered in class. Specifically, the material that you don’t understand versus some material that you’re able to understand in class. I would say this studying method works for me because it allows me to look over the things that are covered in class that I don’t know all that well. A studying tip that would be helpful would be to surround yourself in a quiet environment. Creating a quiet environment while studying makes it easier for the student to recover the material quicker and efficiently. This studying method works best for me ALL the time especially when I’m studying for big exams such as Midterms and Finals. Another studying tip of mine would be making flashcards on paper and writing them down or making flashcards on a computer like a Quizlet. This is good studying advice because when you’re physically writing down material that you’re going to need to know on an exam or quiz it helps to you learn to remember the material because you’re physically writing it down. Quizlet is beneficial for studying too because it allows one to create a set of flashcards on an online website; it helps one study because it creates small quizzes and test to help one learn the material on the website. I would say the Quizlet studying method works best for me whenever I have to learn a lot of terms in a short period of time and paper flashcards work best for me when I have time to study for an exam or test. Another beneficial tip for studying is while reading a book or textbook it’s important to outline or take notes on the keywords or highlighted words; it’s helpful to do this as a reminder of the past pages that you’ve already read.

The kind of feedback that helps me improve would be positive and negative feedback; the reason why it’s helpful to me is because I like to know what I’m doing right/wrong and I also know what I can improve on through this kind of feedback. I recommend this type of feedback from others when I want an opinion on something that I feel very strongly about such as assignments, work ethic, and social skills. Another form of feedback that helps me improve my work effectively would be constructive feedback; this type of feedback helps improve my work effectively because it gives recommendations and suggestions that I can use to better myself. I enjoy hearing this feedback when it comes to self-assessment because these are things that I’m going to need to work on and be efficient to use in life and it is the type of feedback helps to further advance my knowledge of the material that I haven’t covered yet or the material that I still need to cover due to the suggestions that were given on my work. Constructive criticism is which is another example of a feedback that helps me to improve my performance skills. Constructive criticism is helpful to my performance skills because it allows me know the first thing that people notice though my work and whether it’s a good approach or if I need to adjust something. Another feedback approach that helps me improve my skills would be providing a survey at the end of a performance. Creating a survey is an easy set up and provides results that are analyzed by the publics opinion. This type of feedback is helpful because it’s feedback from people that know who you are such as classmates and peers and they also know the work that you’re capable of doing.

I have a rule during the school week where after my classes during the day; I need to complete all my homework for the classes that have assignments for due the next day before I can go out and do anything fun with people. Another rule that kind of have that goes along with completing homework before doing anything would be having to complete my homework before I get to eat dinner. Sometimes I will eat dinner super late due to me not completing my homework at a reasonable time. Waiting to eat dinner gives me an incentive to complete my work quicker and at a sooner time for me to eat at a reasonable time. Another rule that I set for myself is a bedtime during the school week. During the school week, I try not to go to sleep past midnight so I can fully rest and try to get 6+ hours of sleep that night. This rule is depending on what time that I have classes the next day because if I don’t have classes the next day then going to bed at any time is fair game. I set rules for myself on Wednesdays and Fridays the days that I must get up and go to work. The rules that I set on those days are as soon as I’m off work which is around 6 pm I schedule myself to take a nap for a couple hours then, then when I wake up around 8pm I start to do any homework that is due the next day and then I eat dinner. During the week, I have a rule that I need to get at least one meal swipe a day from the Bowman’s Den or Champions Kitchen on the North Campus or from a place on the South Campus.

I would say that I try to interact with a different race or ethnicity almost every single day. I interact with a different race with some students that are in some of my classes. Some a are foreign students and part of the exchange students program at the university. I also interact with a different race when I’m at my dorm in my room because my roommate is Caucasian and I’m African American. I interact with a different ethnicity when I’m at work when customers are ordering their food with me and I’m at the register and they are paying me for my service. I interact with a different race when I’m walking on UK campus to my classes and someone will ask me a question or when I need help and I’m the one asking someone a question. I interact with a different race or ethnicity over social media and technology. Communicate through Instagram, twitter, via snapchat, Facebook, and text messages. I communicate with different races through social media by liking most of the pictures of the people that I follow on my Instagram timeline. Retweeting or sharing information on twitter about current situations that are going on. Recording or making videos to bring awareness or get attention about a certain topic and ethnic people that I know on Facebook. I interact with different ethnicity and races when I’m going out and attending a Caturday, football, basketball, baseball games and basically any public event that I’m going to. I interact with ethnic races when I’m mainly with my parents because they will introduce me to some of their friends that are from a different background. I interact with different races on holidays such as New Years, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Birthdays, Easter, and Halloween. I interact with different ethnicities and races on these holidays because they are special holidays that include people that you enjoy celebrating them with.

My mom was one of my very first mentors I looked up to when I was growing up and she would always give me advice. One of the best advices that I’ve ever gotten before would be “time is one of the most valuable things you have.” The reason that I consider this good advice is because there is some truth behind the statement. I was taught by mom to analyze time by starting with the beginning of my day when I wake up to the end of the day until I go to sleep. During that time, I try to plan my day ahead accordingly by examining how long certain things take to do, what the benefits are, and what the cons are. So far this advice has taught me to value and appreciate time because most of the time I try to follow this advice by doing things ahead of time instead of at the last minute. My dad is one of my second mentors because he’s the second person I looked up to when I was growing up. One of the best advices that I’ve ever gotten from my dad would be to “never give up.” My dad gives me this advice because my parents didn’t have an easy life growing up where they were from and they would love for me to have a better one. So he always gives me this advice because he had a rough life growing up in the past and he always stayed strong and never gave up. So far this advice has taught me that I shouldn’t ever give up on anything that I truly believe in no matter how tough it may be and that I should think about what my parents lifestyle growing up was before and think about the obstacles that they overcame.

I don’t necessarily have a good or bad opinion on Valentine’s Day. I’ve never personally understood the point of having a day just to celebrate love. The reason I say this is because there are 364 days a year and in that time, includes birthdays, Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, etc. All those holidays that I listed celebrate a significant amount of love with family, friends, and maybe even strangers. Valentine’s Day is the 14th of February a day that is supposed to be celebrated with the ones that you love and care for infinitely. I understand that people enjoy celebrating Valentine’s Day because it’s a specific day that one can go all out and truly show how they feel through their actions and words, but a specific day shouldn’t have to influence one to share how they feel towards a person. Valentine’s day is usually a holiday that is celebrated among couples that enjoy exchanging gifts and sharing how much they care for one another and family and friends that are thinking about you. In my opinion I think Valentine’s Day is honestly a holiday for couples that are in a relationship. I say this because Valentine’s Day shows reassurance on from your significant other and how they feel about you. I also feel like Valentine’s day should and could be celebrated at any point in time of the year and that there shouldn’t be just one specific day to show appreciation for the ones you love. I don’t have a bad view on the holiday except for the fact that Valentine’s Day is just another holiday to spend money on the ones you love. I’ve always enjoyed Valentine’s Day when I was younger because the teacher and students would bring in candy and pass it out to the whole class.

My parents are originally born in Rwanda and that is a small country that is in Africa. My parents can speak the native language fluently that is spoken in that country. I was born in the U.S. in the small city of Louisville and the state of Kentucky. I, myself, can also speak my native language fluently which is Kinyarwanda. My parents and I are similar because are our historical background goes back to having Rwandan roots in our family history. My mom is very quiet and shy and doesn’t like to talk much. I’m more like my mom because I’m usually very reserved around people that I don’t know and I try to keep most of my opinions to myself unless I know who you are. My mom is very determined and driven and I feel like she passed those traits down to me because I have plenty of admiration for the goals I plan on achieving in my life. I’m different from my mom when it comes to socializing. My mom is not the type to go out of her way to start a conversation or even ask for help just because she is shy. When it comes to socializing I’m a little more open to talking and meeting new people that I don’t know. I usually am not scared to ask for help when I need it in classes. My dad is the complete opposite of my mom. My dad is very social and loves to interact and meet knew people. I think that I got this trait passed down for my dad. My dad is naturally brain smart and is able to do problems quickly in his head without any problems. My dad loves to watch sports live and specifically basketball and I also enjoy watching sports too.

The reason I share photos on social media is to keep my family and friends updated with what I’m currently doing or plan on doing in the future. For example, for the posts that I make on Facebook I tend to make them appropriate since I know that Facebook is more of a mature and adult audience that will be viewing my pictures and profile. I give updates about what I’m doing on Facebook just in case my family is interested or wondering what I am doing with my life. Usually when I get on Facebook I watch what I post on there because I follow some family members and friends’ parents on there. Another reason why I share photos on social media is to raise awareness or get a big audiences’ attention about a certain issue or topic. For example, the reason I do this is because if I’m curious about a certain issue or topic I will tend to post something about it on social media. I share it on social media because I like to hear the feedback and others opinion on an issue that I would find interesting. The best thing about sharing things on social media is that it has multiple perspectives and provides different ways to look at certain things. Another reason why I share photos on social media is to provide myself with a timeline of the events that occurred in my life. Whenever someone’s photos are being posted on social media it leaves a digital footprint of that picture. This picture is permanent memory that will always be on the internet. I enjoy sharing posts on social media because it allows me to always have the memories on social media if something bad happens to my phone, can keep my family updated with photos, and lastly it helps raise awareness to an issue.

One of my biggest achievements that I am proud of would be receiving a scholarship to the University of Kentucky. This is one of my biggest accomplishments because my junior year I worked very hard to get a good ACT score and tried to maintain a good GPA. Receiving the scholarship required time and effort that I had to put in during high school in the classroom and outside of the classroom. This is an achievement to me because in the future I will be saving money and less debt to carry around on my shoulders. A personal achievement of mine that has made me proud would be getting on the Dean’s List my first semester of college. I wasn’t sure how the transitioning from high school to college was going to go until I got involved here in Lexington making UK easy to adjust and feel welcomed. Although it’s not a big achievement I feel like being able to be comfortable in the environment that you are learning in is an important accomplishment. The reason is because if ones’ able spend their time learning and growing in a different environment they’re learning valuable skills. Another personal achievement that makes me proud would be living in the dorms on campus and on my own away from my parents. This is an achievement for me because some students have a hard time staying on an academic trail if they don’t have discipline from the parents or a guardian. This is an accomplishment for me because I’m able to still go to class, work, and try to maintain a social life and try my best to stay on track for each course with school. This makes me proud because it shows that my hard work eventually will pay off at the end.

Digital Journal 1

This semester I am looking forward to seeing and meeting new friends and teachers on campus and in my classes. This semester I am also looking forward to working hard to keep good grades and making sure that I maintain a good grade in each of my classes. This semester I plan on trying to balance working a job and being able to keep up with school too. I also look forward to learning and experiencing the new courses that I’ve decided to try this semester in hopes that I will enjoy the classes and not have to drop the class. I’m a little optimistic about this semester because last semester went well and I just plan on having the same positive attitude that I had first semester towards my classes and my everyday routines this semester. This semester I’m looking forward to experience my first March madness on the UK campus. I’ve always heard stories and seen all the different fun things that students can be involved in on campus on TV around this time. I’m excited to see our team play at Rupp and compete in the NCAA tournament on campus this year!! As much as I have so much to look forward to this semester there are also a few things that I’m not looking forward to. This semester I accidentally scheduled myself for an 8 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays! I’m dreading having to wake up early because I’m not an early morning person so I’m not too excited about my 8 am at all. I figured out that I couldn’t switch out of it because it was a required class for my major and all the other classes were filled at maximum capacity. Although an 8 am this semester might be dreading and tiring I can happily say that I can look forward to no classes on Fridays!!

4 Paws for Ability

This research topic sparked my interest because I have such a soft spot for dogs! I was interested on doing more research to learn how dogs are able to live with you on campus. I enjoy seeing dogs around campus and seeing them being trained in order to help students around campus.

So far this semester has been going pretty good. A lot more homework assignments and studying hours that is needed to be done. This weekend is also parents weekend for the UKY students. Many students are excited to be reunited with their families!! Parents come in town from all around and come enjoy spending game day with their kids.

construction is a big issue around University of Kentucky’s campus!! I found it interesting multiple students decided to do their research on the construction that is taking place all around campus. Construction is a big factor when it comes to students living in the dorms. Students are affected by the noises preventing lack of sleep and being able to study. How can we prevent this problem from no longer happening? how can we reduce the construction on campus?
