Memories of Live Music
Tonight I was struck with the distinct memory from back when I was a boy. My father had taken my brothers and I to the town over for a night trip, staying in a small inn near the sea. The evening was intoxicating, air touched by the scent of a lively bakery and local dancers filling out empty street corners. It was also the night I experienced my first live band, with some large number of local musicians capturing an audience with the ease and relaxed tones I would dream of for years after. Making your performance appear easy is a skill in itself, I learned.
Left unattended for a time, my brothers and I took pains to pile up on each other, mounting each other’s shoulders to see over the bobbing heads of festival dancers. I remember the song very well, though I’ve never found a contemporary version of it fine enough to share. The strings were drawn straight from a heaven, absolutely excellent and precise to a point where it felt as though they could cut through the cloud of wandering listeners. It’s a feeling I’ve tried to capture for a long time, be it in illustrated form or some awful attempt at music that never came to be.
I’m reminded over and over, the indescribable beauty and life of a live stage. I had the opportunity to view a show recently and the sheer volume of it truly got my heart pumping. While the genre was beyond my taste, being in the room filled me with that same intoxicating excitement. It’s all very dreamlike, so separate from my typical day-to-day, and it makes me want to start filling some of my time with the work of these musicians I adore.
This is all to ask a simple question: should I purchase a record player? I have little interest in cassettes or compact disks, as the libraries of song don’t seem like what I’m searching for. I tend to keep a rather quiet house, so this would be a big change.
Should I purchase a record player?

A) I’m unsurprised you see no difference in the suits, you would not see a car if you were under its wheel.
B) I hate to agree, but this is true.
C) Keep your alphabetical lists consistent.
“3”) Yes, I have considered and worn contemporary suits. I understand you may be stuck on late 20th century fashion trends, typical for that of your age. However, I consider it crucial to pay attention and give grace to new designers, as they are shaping the world where we live on.
I have, in the past, fought the impulse to stick with that which is familiar and comfortable, but the world moves on. Keeping that line of thought will leave you abandoned and alone (and not to mention exceedingly vulnerable as time goes on).
D) Your suits reek of stale boardrooms and cocaine, yet you never see me complaining.

Wonderful post, and though I can't say I've partaken in many contemporary coffee substitutes, it brings to mind a trip I once took to Café Procope some time ago. I haven't come across a meeting place quite like it since, and it seems like an environment that would spark your interest. Did you ever pay it a visit?
Aside from that, I wanted to comment on your use of these tags as I too have struggled with them, particularly with this site. They seem to function both as an archival system and as a makeshift space for further comments, should they not wish to use the assigned text space here (which I may point out is where you have placed your tags, which is in no way wrong but does hinder their use as archival tools).
I've observed Brick use them this way on several occasions. It serves as charming example of how a small form of cultural expression can flourished through the appropriation of designed structures and technical spaces. Art outgrows and evades that which attempts to contain it, doesn't it?
