THIS BLOG WAS MADE FOR A SCHOOL PROJECT JUST AN FYI ••••••••• Statement of Understanding: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is more that just a book about a black girl watching her friends die, and moving out of a terrible gangbanging "ghetto" neighborhood. Through the events which Starr had to suffer through, she learns that her voice is a weapon and can be used in the war of racism that still exists in America. She is a beacon of hope to those around her, giving the name "Starr" a literal and figurative meaning: she lights up the darkness and acts as a leader for others to follow. As it's said in the book, "white people do dumb s--t," and we do. Racism prevails in the world that Starr lives in, and the death of Khalil sheds light on the burning desire to destroy it. Not only does she show bravery and courage, she embraces the power of her voice and protests the police brutality in Garden Heights. And always by her side is her white bf Chris, her family, and her close friends (excluding Hailey). Loyalty and compassion mean something, especially when the times are tough. Starr reveals that you shouldn't have to be "separate people" when you're around different people. She feels like she has to be "Williamson Starr" when she's with her white friends and then she has to be "Garden Heights Starr" when she's home. Ultimately, she comes to the conclusion that when you're around the right people, you can always be yourself. •••••••••• Critique: I thoroughly enjoyed the book. At first, it was a little boring because it was just "going through the motions" and giving background and details about Starr's life and how everything happens around Garden Heights. I like books that make you think, and right off the bat it really didn't with how much "telling" there was. Then, Starr began to change and you could see a difference in her behavior. Instead of keeping her mouth shut, she dared to speak up. That's when I began to really get interested in the book. Starr became the leader of a revolution, and that was really inspiring because she's so young and been through so much already. Also, I liked it because it gave me hope that I can be heard and use my voice to speak out against the injustices that minorities still face today. Lastly, I enjoyed it because of how I felt after I finished it. Instead of feeling bored like some books leave you feeling after you read them, I felt motivated to do something for others. I really like how the book makes you get up and realize there's more to do in this life than to worry about mundane things and to actually help those in need.
OHHHHH MY GOSH, look at this book mail I just got from HarperCollins!! Special editions of The Hate U Give, featuring some of my artwork in the end pages and SIGNED BY ANGIE!!! They re-licensed my pieces to use in the second special edition but I didn’t know they were going to SEND ME SOME! I am completely blown away, and honored. Starr foreshadows how Khalil won't be just a hashtag. Khalil's death ignites a fire that can't be put out. the neighborhood riots in order to get justice for Khalil. they're tired of backing down, and they're tired of the racism. they just want to be seen as equals, not as thugs.

“Do yourself a favor and learn how to walk away. When a connection starts to fade, Learn how to let it go. When a person starts to mistreat you, learn how to move on.. to something and someone better. Don’t waste your energy trying to force something that isn’t meant to be.. Because the truth is.. for every one person who doesn’t value you - there are tons more waiting to love you better. Do better.”
literary term: bowdlerism - the practice of removing or restating any material that might be offensive to others
an example of bowdlerism is when Starr omitted the fact that she knew Khalil sold drugs, but because the cops had asked "did Khalil tell you about him selling drugs?" and technically he didn't tell her, she didn't mention that she knew at all. technically she didn't lie to the cops. so she had nothing to be afraid of. however, because she did leave that little detail out of that meeting, she showed a case of bowdlerism.

literary term: in medias res - in the middle of things
this book starts out with Starr at a party in Garden Heights - right in the middle of action. the Latin phrase in medias res means in the middle of things just like how the book begins. its a perfect example of how ancient literature used to start off their plays or any literary works - in the middle of things.

It has been a while since I really read these books. And my first time rereading them. I always find that I’m discovering new, beautiful things about a book when I reread it, and this series is no exception.
