I love <3 that Nine's defining trait is that he Doesn't Care, that he's baseline apathetic to everything and everyone that doesn't serve him at any given noment, and even more I love the fact it's not born out of malice at all

Also love the fact the smallest sliver of positive attention makes him care so much he's willing to sacrifice his freedom and risk torture and his life with a plan to reshape an entire universe ground up for someone that broke into his house yesterday

It would be very easy to read him as always angry and vindictive with how unpredictably explosive he can be but most of it is merely a bluff to hide his own fear or to scare someone else off

It actually takes quite a bit to drive him to genuine rage where he seeks out to hurt others to satiate it, simply because he just doesn't care enough most of the time

A lot of Nine's behavior after he got the shards was because he trusted Sonic, against his better judgment. He thought Sonic cared about him. But it became very apparent Sonic didn't, that he only saw his Tails when he looked at Nine, and from Nine's pov, Sonic used him to get his own Tails and world back.

Nine had been doing just fine on his own, keeping to himself, staying safe, and in comes this hedgehog who shatters Nine's walls and makes him care. All to just crush it beneath his heel when Sonic wanted to use Nine to fix his own mess.

This wasn't just Nine going "You hurt me so now I'll take everything from you!" and going all super villain. This was a kid--because let's not forget Nine is still a child--who had been shown nothing but cruelty in his short life. So when he's shown friendship, caring, and inclusion, he discovers he likes that, even if part of him is screaming at him that this is a trick, this isn't going to end well.

And in the end, it would seem that part of him was right.

This is a hurt kid, one who wanted friendship, and was once again shown that it wasn't in the cards for him. He lashed out because of that pain, that shame that he allowed himself to believe, for even a moment, that kind of life could be his.

He tried just being invisible. He tried just living his life, and letting others live theirs. But then his life was turned upside down, hope given and taken back, and it just became the straw that broke the camel's back. The power of the shards didn't help matters (as it seems to drive people insane) and it just cranked Nine's feelings up to 11.

He wasn't even considering revenge after the "betrayal" in the cave, he just left, hurt and sad, wanting to move on immediately and forget all of what happened and get to creating his escapist utopia

Unfortunately neither Shadow, Sonic or the show's plot were willing to let him get off the hook with the prism so fast and while reality itself began to fall appart Sonic STILL almost managed to fully talk him down, and then it took an entire army of people coming for him and multiple more slights from Sonic and copious amounts of paradox energy to get Nine to finally snap and want to kill someone

He just wants to be loved and left alone so deeply it makes me ill

This is my first year participating in the Sonic The Hedgehog Big Bang, and I truly hope it isn't my last with this community. You guys were an absolute JOY to work with, and this piece is what I hope makes justice to the AMAZING fanfic written by @magicwhiskers29 (PLEASE! go check it out!! I'll edit the post once it goes live), and helps contribute to @beegswaz breathtaking artwork

Something that can be said about the City is that it’s never without a way to make something of you. Even if the way it sustains itself is to take and take from you until you’re broken apart.

A character study and backstory of Rusty Rose, from early to childhood when she was still just Amy, to final liberation by her own hands after the restoration of the Paradox Prism.

A study written for the 2026 Sonic the Hedgehog Big Bang! ( @sthbigbang ) I worked on this piece with the wonderful artists @l-p-fraise and @beegswaz who were so lovely to work with!! I thank them both for their continued enthusiasm and support!!

Here's the fic I've been cooking up for the StHBB26! It's a reexamination of Sonic Prime from Nine's POV leading up to the argument in the cave. The story diverges there where the conversation goes differently. It's a lot of Nine thinking and thinking about feeling haha

I was lucky enough to work with @nekolikedacat (art here) and @chocobunnans (art TBA) as artist for my fic. They did great work, go show them some love! I'd also like to give a special thank you to @lavenderbirchtrees for helping with some developmental editing. His suggestions really helped me make this fic feel more like a unique story than it did! Characters who become that of a cornered, feral animal in fight or flight. Characters that snarl and growl and bare their fangs, whos pupils dilate and shrink to slits, as their heart pounds like gunfire in their ears. Characters that crouch in an immediate defensive position should they need to bolt or pounce or attack. Characters who back into corners with their tail tucked between their legs and their hair standing on end, vision fuzzy and fists clenched. Characters that turn off all personality and thought when in danger and revert to that primal, traumatized, protective state.
