Alice was about to bump her head into the next wall.
It seemed that no matter how many times she swore to herself that she would not procrastinate anymore, she just kept doing it.
Which is exactly why she now found herself sitting alone in the dormsâ common room, at one A.M., surrounded by books she couldnât read well because of the low lights, and two currently empty coffee mugs.
And that wasnât even the worst part!
No, because she had an upcoming chemisty test tomorrow and for some reason, she had only realized it that morning.
And since she already had made plans to go grocery shopping with her aunt, who needed her help with all the bags, it was only two in the afternoon when she had finally opened her books.
And now, now she was about to have a mental breakdown, a bad one, at that.
There were nearly three months worth of studying and she had to learn everything by heart in one night: otherwise, sheâd have to wait another semester to try again, and she didnât have the time for that.
She needed to pass on the first try. However, right now, she was certain sheâd fail.
Anxiety, fear, stress, panic took a toll at once, and before she knew it, tears were streaming down her face: moments later, she was full-on sobbing.
âWhat are you doing?â
Alice nearly fell out of her chair. Hiccupping louder than she meant, she raised her head to see Jude Higginson, the best friend of her current best friendâs boyfriend.
Not exactly the type of guy she would befriend on campus: yet here he was, looking at her like she was some sort of alien.
Suddenly remembering her looks, she scrambled to pat dry the tears on her cheeks with the sleeves of her jumper. She only stopped when she understood how useless it was: she was having a crisis alone at night, Jude wasnât her friend and he wasnât even a boy sheâd ever want to impress: did it really matter if she looked like some kind of rare panda?
âI said, what are you doing?â
Alice cleared her throat: âStudying.â
âAt one A.M.?â Jude raised an eyebrow.
âI study better at night.â
Alice dropped her forearms on the table, producing a loud thud sound: âListen, I donât need this right now. I get that you like bickering and-and going around being all sarcastic, but I am in a hurry-â she gestured to the pile of books sitting right next to her notebook. âAnd Iâd really appreciate it if you left me alone.â She gave him a tight smile and didnât even wait for his reply to go back to her things.
âWhy were you crying?â
Alice sighed loudly before looking up. She didnât need this, she so didnât need this!
âI was having a bit of a crisis because as you can see, I have a lot of stuff to study, but I only have a few hours to do so, and you got in just as I started having a panic attack.â
The two stayed silent after that, but knowing Jude, he was probably about to go and pop another question to make loose time, precious time.
âWhy are you studying all of this now, though?â
She gripped the pencil in her left hand: âYou really want me to say it?â She laughed forcefully. âI procrastinated. Alright? I kept pushing away my responsibilities and then I frigginâ forgot I had a test on the 13th and as you can see now weâre on the 12th, no, actually itâs already tomorrow, but you get the gist-â
Alice stopped her banter when she saw the blank expression on Judeâs face: then, like heâd just had an epiphany, he pulled out a chair from a desk nearby and sat down right next to her.
âWhat are you doing?â She stayed unnaturally rigid.
He sighed obnoxiously: âHelping you, obviously.â
â⌠no.â Alice shook her head with a hint of a smile on her face.
âYes. I took this test two weeks ago, I already know this stuff. If you want to make sure you pass it, I suggest you accept my offer without asking dumb questions.â
Alice stayed still, pondering on her options.
âTick-tock, tick-tock. Time is running thin, dear. You better decideâŚâ
He said heâd already taken the test, right? Then this would definitely turn out to be a good idea.
