I think Ponyboy used to idolize Darry. Darry was just that much older as to seem incomprehensibly cool, but still young enough to be a sibling, a peer. Pony may have been closer with Soda, but Darry was the one he was in awe of, the one he wanted to emulate. Pony wanted to be near Soda, but he wanted to be like Darry. He wanted to be smart like Darry, athletic like Darry. He wanted to be all the things he overheard grownups say about Darry, like “mature for his age” and “going places.” He copied everything Darry did. He followed Darry around like a puppy.
Pony’s painfully sensitive hurt, anger and resentment toward Darry is the kind that’s only born out of the betrayal of someone falling off the pedestal you’ve placed them on. “I didn’t hardly think of him as being human.” And isn’t that the crux of it. Ponyboy saw Darry as a god, before deciding he was the devil, and he finally had to learn that Darry is human.

thinking about a bob sheldon who probably asked permission to go to parties or the movies or anywhere at all in hopes that his parents would say no this time
bob sheldon who has a new car every three months because he “randomly” asks for a new one in hopes of them responding with a “hell no, your car works perfectly fine as is” but instead he gets a yes and has to backtrack with “no i was just joking, i don’t really want a new one i like my car” (every time without fail he still wakes up three days later to his dad jingling the keys to whatever hot new car is out there)
bob sheldon who stays outside a little later each night before going home, hoping to find the time when his parents start to get upset with him
bob sheldon who never finds that time because as long as he comes home alive and well his parents don’t mind
bob sheldon who starts fighting at 10 because coming home with bruises had his parents worried about him. bob sheldon who continues getting in fights because when he comes home bruised it’s the one time is parents look at him disappointedly. bob sheldon who starts picking fights with greasers who have broken bottles and chains and knives and bricks because lately instead of being worried his parents ask how the fight went as if they were interested and no longer minded the fights
5 year old bob sheldon who begged his parents to go on a trip for spring break and they said yes if he got all a’s. bob sheldon who continued to get straight a’s afterwards, 13 year old bob sheldon who previously begged for another trip but he got a C in that one class so no way will they go. bob who’s fairly confused when he’s helping load the car for the trip even after showing them his report card. 18 year old bob sheldon who doesn’t even bother bringing his report card home anymore because it evidently does not matter if he has As or Fs
bob sheldon staying up late talking to his parents when he’s 16 and on a whim he says he’s been thinking about asking cherry to marry him because he knocked her up just to see their reaction. bob sheldon who decides to call it a night when they react with nothing but joy and excitement
bob sheldon who’s drunk every night because when he’s drunk he’s a little less perceptive and when he comes home late and they help him to bed he can pretend they’re fixing to ground him.
(bob sheldon who as he holds ponyboy curtis under the fountain only has one thought in mind: if i hurt him bad enough, ill get arrested, then mom and dad will have no choice but to be angry with me)
Thinking about Darry Curtis, growing up experiencing violence at the hands of the Socs, probably getting jumped, definitely fighting them in rumbles and less organized, much less fair street fights. Then he starts high school, and he walks onto the football field for freshman year tryouts, and he sees all those same Socs glaring and sneering at him. And he wipes the floor with all of them. So now some of them have to treat him as a teammate, and others have to suffer the humiliation of not even making the team when this dirty greaser did. And the other greasers are too impressed to feel betrayed, because what an iconic way to exact revenge. Beating them at their own game - literally.

Im sorry but yall are wrong. ponyboy LOVES Shakespeare actually. He 100% gets mad as hell whenever someone says that R&J is about stupid horny teenagers and thinks Macbeth is super cool. im right btw.

Something flickered behind Darry’s eyes and then they were ice again. “Hello, Paul.”

“He was looking at Darry with an expression I couldn’t quite place, but disliked.”
“Darry hadn’t moved a muscle or changed expression, but you could see he hated Paul now.”
“Then Paul said, “I’ll take you,” and something like a smile crossed Darry’s face. I knew Darry had thought he could take Paul any time.”
“They moved in a circle under the light, counterclockwise, eyeing each other, sizing each other up, maybe remembering old faults and wondering if they were still there.”
Do you regularly think about the fact that Johnny Cade enjoyed looking at the stars and watching the sunrise and analyzing fiction and poetry, and he probably would've been just as much of a daydreamy little nerd as Ponyboy, maybe even more so, but he was constantly on edge and worn down from all the abuse and harassment he went through, and he was so miserable and so busy just trying to survive that he never even noticed how neat clouds are and the way they change colors at sunset, until Ponyboy brought it to his attention, and he would've completely missed out on all those other little things if he hadn't had Ponyboy for a friend, and they meant so much to him that he wanted Dally to look at a sunset so that maybe he would experience the same sense of awe and see that there was still beauty in the world in spite of all the chaos around them, and that you could bring some joy to your life by taking the time to appreciate the simple everyday things you'd overlooked before, and he used his dying breath to tell Ponyboy not to lose his ability to see that, or are you normal?
hailey cherry you are so magical to me and me only. you got me analyzing a line i never gave much thought before.
“take care of yourself ponyboy”
i don’t wanna say the other cherrys weren’t but hailey!cherry sounded genuinely concerned about ponyboy’s wellbeing. ponyboy staring at the blank tv screen not even stirring when she mentions johnny or the sunset, scared her bad.
ponyboy told her that he didn’t like fighting and that he wasn’t as much of a tough guy as he pretends to be. he told cherry that he likes reading and movies. that he likes watching the sunset and watching the colors blur together.
and then roughly three weeks later cherrys warily watching a that same gentle hearted 14 yr boy wear a hundred and ten bruises. he’s covered in bruises from fighting a rumble that cherry begged him not to fight, that he still fought anyways because he wanted to; he felt he had to.
cherrys watching a boy covered in bruises on his living room floor staring at a blank tv screen. he doesn’t move a muscle and for a second cherrys terrified. she knows this kid isn’t like his friends; just like how she’s not like her own. this kid is gentle hearted and sensitive, and yet, she’s never seen someone look so much like an immovable rock.
ponyboy’s sitting on his living room floor staring at a blank tv screen breathily shallowly. (shallow like the breaths you take when oxygen is running low and it takes every fiber of you’re just to keep breathing.)
cherrys scared that by the time ponyboy returns back to school she’s never see that gentle hearted kid again. instead it would be another kid that takes his place. a kid who’s tough, not scared of anything, who stops finding joy in the little things because he’s afraid of it all getting snatched away again.
cherry is genuinely concerned for the well being of ponyboy curtis and she doesn’t want him to end up being another dallas or bob because she knows he can be more
I don’t think Soda goes to Vietnam. Not only is it not canon, but several diligent fans have pointed out, his birthday wasn’t called in the draft lottery. So the only way he would go is if he enlisted. Now, I could see Soda wanting to enlist for a number of reasons: money, purpose and direction in life, patriotism, the need to feel like he’s doing something important, etc.
But if he even brought up the slightest hint that he was thinking about enlisting, you cannot tell me that his brothers and Steve wouldn’t practically strap him to a chair until they get it through his head all the reasons that is absolutely not going to happen.
