The genie in Aladdin is an actual jinn. In Arabic genie actually means “my jinn (jinn-i).

What is a jinn?

In Islamic belief, jinn are invisible entity, who roamed the earth before Adam, created by God out of fire, just as God crested Adam of clay. These spirits can be good, but can also be very, very evil and demonic. “One hadith (divine revelations) divides them into three groups, with one type flying through the air; another that are snakes and dogs; and a third that moves from place to place like human.” The genie in Aladdin also took these forms in the movie (flying through the air, turning into a snake, and roaming around).

Why is this problematic?

The film dabbles into the unseen world and glorifies spirits and magic. Part of the Muslim faith is to believe in the unseen world, but not to make a mockery of these beliefs. We should never ask for anything from the jinn... that is solely to be for God.

Jinn are real creatures that form a world other than that of mankind, capable of causing physical and mental harm to human beings. An example of such harm is possession. The movie romanticizes the demonic nature of what the jinn is actually like.
