A museum has an obligation to provide a historical basis for their exhibits and a context.

Is this true? Do museums have an obligation to provide historical background? If this is the obligation of the museum, what is the obligation of visitor? Can art be appreciated purely for the aesthetic? With enough information for the visitor to do their own research, do we need to inundate people with facts?

Ask questions. And no question is too silly. Ask the big questions, and ask them of everyone, especially each other...Consider everyone together as collaborators in this ongoing conversation that we call the universe. An interest in that conversation is likely why you’re here today...remember your questions whether you ask them in a poem, or an equation, or a hypothesis, or even a drawing. They are all ways to engage with your world.

In my line of work, we often talk about the art of diplomacy as we try to make people’s lives a little better around the world. But, in fact, art is also a tool of diplomacy. It reaches beyond governments, past the conference rooms and presidential palaces, to help us connect with more people in more places. It is a universal language in our search for common ground, an expression of our shared humanity.

November 8, 1847: Dracula Author Bram Stoker is Born

165 years ago,  Bram Stoker, the author of Dracula, was born outside of Dublin. Dracula, a chilling masterpiece of Gothic horror, was first published in 1897 and has never been out of print since.

Although it was not the first story about a vampire, it became the most well-known and has since had a huge impact on popular culture as respectful interpretation as well as imitation and parody. For more on the Dracula author’s personal and professional life, visit Masterpiece’s Bram Stoker bio.

The field of education is undergoing a revolution precipitated by not only the rapid growth of technologies that are reshaping access to information and resources, communication, and learning, but by the demands of an evolving global economy that requires collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. “What role should a museum play as a place of learning in the 21st century?” and “What unique value will museums add to the field?”, are key questions that Howard Gardner, Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education and his son Andrew Gardner, Senior Manager BrainPOP Educators, will consider in a conversation moderated by MoMA’s Edward John Noble Deputy Director for Education, Wendy Woon.

Tagul -  Tagul has some features that Wordle doesn’t, like custom shapes selection and multiple fonts usage in one cloud. It also allows for the use of tagged words that can act as pointers to URL’s if embedded in a web page. It abounds in options but registration may limit classroom use.  Requires a log in with email.

Word It Out  - Much like Wordle, it creates word clouds out of any text that you paste into the text box. This application allows  the word cloud to be customized by size, font, and color scheme.  Word It Out also allows the user to  ignore certain words and thus  keeps them out of the word cloud.  Can be used without a login, although the saving option requires an email. Can work around this option by right clicking to save as jpeg and/or screen print.

Tag Crowd - While it does not give the color,unique style, or layout variation of of Wordle, it does allow one to see frequency of words. It also allows a file to be uploaded or a URL address to be used.  The word cloud creations can be saved as a PDF files or  printed from a full screen print menu. No login or email is required and free use of the product is for nonprofit use listed under creative commons.

Can we teach and emphasize process more often than product? Can we create an order and the conditions for learning through experimentation? Simultaneously, can we provide focus? Can we offer alternatives to the habitual through our teaching? Can we help students to even perhaps make work that is… timeless?

Three museums across the U.S. are collaborating on exhibitions of California artist James Turrell, to take place in spring 2013. A retrospective opening May 26 at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, organized by Christine Y. Kim, examines Turrell’s work from 1966 to the present. Two smaller exhibitions will take place concurrently at the Guggenheim in New York (June–Sept. 2013) and at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (Apr. 7–Aug. 18, 2013).

Happy Birthday to you, Paul Gauguin! Today marks the 164th anniversary of the birth of this leading French Post-Impressionist artist. We are excited to have one of his work highlight our Impressionist/Modern Art Evening sale on June 20th.

This is a recently rediscovered painting dating from Gauguin’s historic trip to Tahiti.

The Asian Art Museum answers a question about one of their exhibitions.  This is similar to American Art's Ask Joan of Art program but much less formal.  I can see this possibly becoming a great way to answer visitor questions about a museum or a specific work of art.
