Egyptians as Ever United: President Adly Mansour visits Coptic Pope on the occasion of Coptic Christmas

CAIRO – Egypt's interim president has made a rare visit to see the pontiff of the nation's Orthodox Christians at St. Mark's Cathedral, the papal seat in central Cairo.

Sunday's highly symbolic visit to Pope Tawadros II by Adly Mansour was made ahead of the Coptic Christmas, which falls on Tuesday.

Mansour was installed by the military on July 3 to replace Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, removed from office after just a year in which relations between the government and the country's Christians were fraught with tension and distrust.

Egypt's Christians account for some 10 percent of the nation's 90 million people. They are mostly members of the Orthodox church, one of Christendom's oldest. They long have complained of discrimination by the nation's Muslim majority.

A constitution to change the lives of Egyptians” Amr Moussa, Head of Egypt’s 50-member Constitutional Committee Popular referendum on Egypt's draft constitution is scheduled to take place mid January. The final draft has been submitted to interim President Adly Mansour for his approval. "The new constitution would change the lives of Egyptian citizens as it emphasizes freedoms, rights, and interests of all sects of the Egyptian people," said head of the country's committee of 50 re-writing the constitution, Amr Moussa.Moussa said the new constitution requires the state to have in place the right policies to deal with problems including; education,healthcare, environment, labor and other issues. Moussa urged Egyptians to vote "yes" at the time of the referendum, adding that this would be the first step along the roadmap set forth by the interim government, which also includes the holding of both parliamentary and presidential elections to move Egypt from its transitional phase into a more stable democracy.

Moussa remarked that the articles of the new constitution, speak of a civilian state, and also refer to Islam as the main source for legislation, "on which point there is no confusion or disagreement." Articles on freedoms, he added are drastically different from those in the 2012 constitution. He stressed the Egyptian people are guaranteed their full rights and freedoms under the new constitution and all citizens are equal before the law. "The constitution also bans formation of political parties on religious basis and prohibits any political activity with a religious motivation or discrimination based on gender or ethnicity" Moussa said.
