(Some) Tony Nominee Reactions → Best Leading Actress in a Musical: Audra McDonald
The scenery for the opera "Andre Chenier" by Italian musician Umberto Giordano is seen on a giant floating stage at Lake Constance during a photo rehearsal in Bregenz, Austria, on July 15, 2011. The opera, directed by British director Keith Warner, had its premiere on July 20 at the annual Bregenz festival.
Rent opened tonight for previews at New World Stages.
There was one bright spot. The adorable Jennifer Damiano was a delightful surprise to the Imperial Theater audience with her portrayal of Mary Jane Watson. Unfortunately, the Imperial Theater is home to Billy Elliot two blocks away from where Spider-Man is playing. 'I'm still figuring my way around the city,' an embarrassed Damiano admitted later at a Jersey City Applebee's that she had mistaken for Sardi's.
Happy opening night to Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark!

Many theatre fans probably know the origin of the top Broadway honor being called the “Tony” Awards - they’re named after Antoinette Perry, of course. But who was she?
Brock Pemberton met her at a Rachmaninoff concert at Carnegie Hall in 1921. Arriving late he stood at the back. “By far the...

Debuts Day Tuesday: Kristin Chenoweth (1997, Steel Pier)
Kristin Chenoweth has graced television, movies, and Broadway stages for more than a decade. So where did she get her Broadway start?
That’d be in the 1997 flop Steel Pier. The show starred Karen Ziemba, Daniel McDonald, and Debra Monk. The plot was murky at best - it centered around a fallen pilot who only has three weeks to relive his life, participating in a dance-‘til-you-drop competition with a woman he falls in love with - and the show closed after only two months.
Below: a look and listen at Ms. Chenoweth in Steel Pier.

In 1984, Stephen Sondheim discusses a “terrible idea” for a musical: Sunset Boulevard. Of course, the classic 1950 movie would later be adapted into a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The show received a two-year Broadway run (originally starring Glenn Close, who won a Tony for her performance) and a four-year London run (originally starring Patti LuPone, who was promised a transfer to Broadway and sued - winning a reported $1M settlement - when she was replaced.) Both productions closed in 1997. Since then, Sunset Boulevard has had productions in a handful of countries worldwide.
