We are a group of over 40 nonprofit organizations, community residents, activists, & advocates for fair housing. Our focus to stop the exclusionary construction & permits at the Broadway Triangle.

A record-high 42,000 kids slept in a city homeless shelter last year — including 1 in 17 of New York’s black children, a report to be released Thursday found.

Overall, one in 43 city children were among the 116,000 people forced into shelters during the year, according to a Coalition for the Homeless analysis that portrays a dire housing crisis that is hitting kids and African-Americans the hardest.

Shekar Krishnan, Director of the Preserving Affordable Housing Group Representation Unit and Juan Ramos, Chair of the Broadway Triangle Community Coalition (BTCC), appeared on BK Live, the flagship news program of Brooklyn Independent Media. They were invited to discuss the City’s Broadway Triangle rezoning and BTCC’s efforts to achieve racial and housing justice. They were joined by a documentary filmmaker from Brooklyn-based Uniondocs, which has been working for several years on a film about the community’s struggle over the rezoning. Shekar and Juan and describe how BTCC’s work around the Broadway Triangle is a community-wide movement to ensure that a major public plan is shaped by the voices of the affected neighborhoods, rather than imposed upon them.

The Broadway Triangle Urban Renewal Area is the largest plot of vacant land available for affordable housing in Brooklyn. If done correctly, its rezoning provides the best opportunity for the City and the new mayoral administration to meet the affordable housing need of our communities and beyond.
