DISPLACEMENT- Week 1
What do you get when you combine 525 pounds of clay, 1 lawyer, and 21 HOLA students? The first day of Displacement! As we kick off our Public Art Residency on displacement and gentrification, crucial issues challenging many Angelenos today, Alyse and Michael are literally moving out of their long time home and studio after a year long legal battle. Their personal experience ignites the discussion as we jump into this project.
We started the day with introductions and definitions. What makes a home? What does it mean to be displaced? How does gentrification affect our community? Guest speaker Ridge Gonzalez, co-founder of the Eviction Defense Network, facilitated a discussion with the artists and students to address these questions.
This conversation brought us to our first workshop led by Michael and Alyse. As HOLA students got their hands dirty making clay maquettes representing displacement, they shared their own stories. Houses, tents, gardens, toilets and other symbols of home and neighborhood appeared from giant blocks of clay. Meanwhile our second guest speaker, Eviction Defense Network Attorney Claudia Medina, told the touching story of her unexpected path to law school and the joy her work brings her.
To finish the day, we used our clay maquettes to brainstorm three ideas for large scale collaborative sculptures. Our final selection: a lemon tree, a duck, and a greedy man. As the project takes off, Gonzalez’s words hang in the air, “it’s how you come at me.” HOLA’s Public Art Residency is coming at you full of creativity, questions, and demands for our city. I hope you’re ready!
Stay tuned for more.
