no. not really. but I had my hair real long in college. your great uncle never gave me peace over it. I remember standin in a trifold mirror for my college photo n thinkin how foolish you look. I went to a barber n had it all cut off.

did you ever have your hair long again?

not all my life.

what did you think about the war?

I was like most people. didn't understand it. I knew someone across the way. Benny. his older brother was drafted n killed. Benny killed himself in the fall after.

what would you have done if you were drafted?

go whatever they sent me I suppose.

do you have any great regrets?

why do I wish I had a stomach for it? it's inevitable I suppose. I wish I wasn't always so surprised by it.

I don't think death is meant to be something we can swallow. its like a gut punch. never trust someone who can take a gut punch well.

It was fucking cold. The biting, bitter kind. The type that turned your stomach, that promised long fucking nights that bled into long fucking days.

So, to say Johnny was having a great fucking time would be an understatement.

A car rips by, the engine groaning with the exertion of an animal begging to be put out of its misery, the wind tugging the worn fabric of Johnny's t shirt tight against his ribs. The streetlight overhead flickered, the wires pulled out in places, stripped like a carcass. Everything hurt. What was new?

Johnny is on his knees in the dirt. Stones and broken pieces of asphalt turned between shaking fingers, picked up, rolled over, cast away. How much time passes in the dark- he's not sure. Finally, he stands, knees buckling with the memory of some old injury, braces himself against the telephone booth mounted to the pole.

The phone hangs crooked, numbers worn away under hundreds of hands. The echo of some distant conversation buzzes in the receiver when Johnny picks it up, presses the roundest rock he could find in the pitch black on the side of the closest thing Tusla had to a highway to the coin slot. By some miracle of fucking God, it takes, drops into the box with a hollow thunk.

Johnny knows the number from memory.

The phone rings once, twice, three times. Johnny is just cursing his luck, his life, and Dallas fucking Winston when the line clicks over.

"Merril, who the fuck is this?" The liquor is heavy in his throat. Music blares in the background, threads a discordent hormony to the sound of a distant fight. Johnny thinks he recognizes the voices. He doesn't care much to remember who they belong to.

"Give me Dallas." He's too tired for niceties. He can feel the cold in his bones. A Chevy drives by. It's radio humming Ode To Billie Joel. Fuck, Johnny was beginning to hate that song.

"Oh, Cade." Buck pulls the phone away from his head, hollers away from the receiver. "Winston! Your boy's hogging my fucking line! Again."

Johnny rolls his eyes, tucks his elbows close to his sides, leans a bare shoulder against the collection of splinters that was the telephone pole. "He'll be down in a minute." Johnny just hums his acknowledgment, whatever energy or desire to thank him leeching out with the last of his patience.

intermission n end of show thoughts

- Nolan really plays that bitch like he is Fourteen. like Thats A Fourteen Year Old.

- darry is just So Tired. I forget who played him but he really did such a good job.

- Soda's mediating kinda makes me Sick To My Stomach. ik the musical had some criticism for dumbing down soda n though I won't argue with that I do think that alot of his character is still there if you read into it.

- johnny playing around with soda ☹️

- johnny is VERY rarely on the same level as pony. like PHYSICALLY. hes usually higher or lower. I dont have the brain power to suss of why rn but it is interesting.

- the HARMONIES

- truly there is no comparison for the lighting n sound design. like actually blown away.

- dally n johnny looking at each other in the final ☹️
