Using algebra? What’s a rocket?
“Yeah, here, in the wizarding world- but we’re the vast minority of the actual population of earth. Out there it’s the science and math that counts.”
Really? What sorts of things do people do with it?
{ “Well that’s-” Morgan paused, considering how to best phrase his racing thoughts as a concise statement. If the Ignotum were trained, even at an introductory level, in math and science, they had an advantage over Hogwarts trained wizards and witches, especially in the muggle world. However, the Ignotum were barred from seeking employment in the muggle world. Morgan’s initial instinct was to assume that it was all a conspiracy. That the Wizengamot had understood that they were restricting GIFT’s graduates from taking advantage of their skills- and was doing it on purpose. That seemed like a bit of a jump though, so he forced himself to let it go. At least for the moment. “- pretty cool. I wish I knew that stuff.” }
“Really? You all know all the magic and everything. That’s a lot more useful and practical out here than being able to work out x in some random equation.”
I had a…er….run in with some authorities…
Why, what was their issue?
Do you know calculus? Physics? Do all of you?
Yeah, we do it in school.
Oh, no. That’s not why you’re interesting. If I were you I don’t know if I’d still be so into science.
I was less into it back there, actually. There I didn’t feel good at it. Compared to other people, you know? Here I do. I know way more than a lot of people I’ve talked to. It’s one of the few things that is still at least somewhat comfortable. Gravity is the same out here as in there, same with calculus and even how genetics work even if it’s common for people to actually know their donors – I mean, their parents – and we never did.
You’re Ignotum right?
Yes. And?
Wait, was that your answer?
It’s the same thing, except you don’t pay monthly, you just put money on it as and when you need it. I think the rents are pretty good, too, so if you put a five sickles on, say, it should last you a while. And then as long as you go somewhere you can connect to use it, you shouldn’t have to pay to go online. But what? You’d like to be more than friends? They sound- boring, if we’re going to be honest. Have you managed to get yourself an Omnicast yet?
I’ll have to see if I can find it somewhere then. If it’s... I don’t know, things are starting to feel like I might actually be stuck with this so it would be useful to have some of all this everyone seems to need for anything here. Maybe? I don’t know. I wasn’t good at this in GIFT. It was complicated enough there, and I bet here it’s even more so, right? I don’t even know how that would work when you don’t live together and see each other all the time already. They were, but we didn’t know that there were things less boring out there. There was one that came with the place I’m renting, but I have to pay more to use it, so I haven’t tried yet, because I’m not sure how it even works.
Huh. I guess. I don’t know if they’ve got rotating exhibits or… You’re interesting.
Oh, maybe. I wouldn’t know about that. Interesting how?
Just you wait until the TriWizard Tournament. That ought to be coming up soon.
The... What’s that? That’s not one I’ve heard of yet.
The effect of caffeine is actually highly scientific. You don’t want me to doubt science, do you?
Because it’s a drug. It’s not a good thing. It messes with your mind. Why do you think we were never allowed it?
Errr….not exactly.
So what then?
Well Natural History’s sort of science too I think. Cool though. I’ve only been there once.
Maybe, but it’s old science. It’s not the sort of stuff we learnt. It’s the sort of science they kept on us to try and stop us from realising that that wasn’t all there was. Does it change enough to go more than once, anyway? Surely if you’ve been, you’ve been.
So let’s go through this again. Today there is a big tennis match, a big football match, and there’s all these people cycling all over a different country and being shown on telly doing so? I think summer is making this place a bit better, you know.
Wow, I was too. No way.
All right. Very funny. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see how you can believe in that after everything?
You really need to get a phone. Maybe you could get a pay-as-you-go; there must be somewhere that still does those. Maybe it was just a bit surprising in the moment? I suppose you won’t know unless you see her again. Is that the only film you’ve seen?
What’s that? Maybe. It was just a little strange. We did see each other afterwards, and I do think that we’re friends, now but— Anyway. Er, out here, yes. We had some in GIFT but they’re not what you’d think of as films, so much. They’re not realistic to out here at all. In fact they weren’t even very good. A lot of them were just science lab things.
That’s fair, yeah. Do you know which one you’re heading too? Museum-wise.
I was going to start with the Science Museum, because that at least won’t be too much of a step into the bizarre. Then I’m going to try this Natural History place.
