Strategies Project Team
The Brock U Marketing Association’s strategies team was off to a quick start this year with two organizations seeking our assistance in our first month as a team.
Firstly, the John Nsame Foundation (JNF) looked to us for help in promoting their Pep Rally held on October 22nd in the Bob Davis gym at Brock. Through collaboration with several other Brock clubs, the Pep Rally achieved its goal of students showing their Brock pride and appreciation for what they have. Social media and students throughout campus talking about the event were instrumental in making it a success.
The second organization that looked to BUMA for marketing skills is The Hope Centre out of Welland, Ontario. The Hope Centre is in the process of transitioning from homeless shelters to sustainable housing. The strategies team is working on marketing the organization’s annual general meeting where their accomplishments, goals, and financials will be presented to the public and key stakeholders.
Working with these two organizations has helped our team to understand just how important marketing is in terms of creating awareness for and attracting people to an event.

Tools for ensuring success in the job market before walking off the stage
Experience. Leadership. Proven results. These are just some of the qualities that employers are looking for out of graduating students out of the gate. Exceptional marks are a great asset to have, but employers are seeking more than your ability to regurgitate learned information onto a piece of paper. They want proof that you can be trusted and can instill confidence in you to carry out the meaningful roles and responsibilities for their company. Two students side-by-side in an interview process with the same sparkling 90% average will ultimately differentiated by one key quality: Experience. How do you get experience? Most employers know you are a part-time or full-time student and other than valuable summer positions and internships, there are few jobs that students can work during the school year that will allow them to have the time and work-load flexibility to concentrate on school and have relevant experience. That is why getting involved in competitions, conferences and extra-curricular clubs are imperative for success.
If this sounds like the same old spiel that guidance counsellors gave you at the beginning of first year, then list to this: 15.8% of business grads do not find work within the first 6 months after graduating. What are the plausible causes of this? It could be most competing graduates have strong networking skills and experience in high-caliber business competitions, but it could even be that employers simply do not believe you are a fit. Proving to employers that you can fit into their organizational culture and can be trusted with responsibilities goes beyond having great marks. Competitions like the PepsiCo Apprentice Challenge, Dobson Case Competition and Canada’s Next Top Ad Exec are a few of the many competitions out there that catch employers’ eyes. Success in these competitions prove to employers that you have exceptional communication and leadership skills, are able to apply theory into real-life situations and can meet tight time deadlines. These experiences define your brand and your value to the employer. And what better way of accentuating your value than to demonstrate how you can solve real-world business challenges for employers?
Another way of getting experience, and probably one of the most prominent, is attending conferences. These conferences are a way of exploring your interests, learning more about the industry, and networking with potential employers. By conversing with employers and gaining network connections will ultimately make your job a lot easier come April when you are looking for a career. You need to follow proper business etiquette, leave a resume or business card for employers and even schedule another day to get a coffee and find out more about the company. Showing genuine interest in the employer and what they do will show them that you are a passionate, inquisitive mind that could be beneficial to their company and if not, there is a chance they might know of someone who will require your services.
Lastly, getting involved in student clubs will allow you to apply knowledge gained in your classes and develop your interpersonal, leadership and communication skills. Being a President, Vice-President, or Team Lead of a club will show employers that you acknowledge how competitive the job market is and your value goes beyond high marks. These club positions demonstrate that you can handle heavy responsibilities during the hectic school year and can service end-users within dynamic time constraints.
Words cannot express how strongly I encourage getting involved in all aspects of volunteering and experience-building. These experiences will separate you from the next applicant and at the end of the day, when you are eye-to-eye with an employer in an interview, you will have to face the music unto why you are perfect fit for the job and what separates you from the rest.
