“Brody O’Shea, that’s a great name” Hannah smiled shaking his hand. “ How long have you lived here?”
He grinned. “Hannah’s a great name as well. It suits you.” He shrugged. “I’m a Norbury baby, I must admit. But my boyfriend and I moved back here a few years ago after being in LA because I got homesick. There’s just something about this place.”
“ I’ve been over a month and I still haven’t made that many friends, so hello, my names Hannah. It’s nice to meet you” She replied holding out her hand
Brody grinned at the girl, taking her hand and shaking it. “Nice to meet you. Brody O’Shea.”

He should have been prepared but he wasn’t. The full force of Brody’s ecstatic embrace made Freddie teeter back with a soft, “whoa,” He held onto his partner, more out of necessity for support than anything else but once he was balanced, Freddie properly returned the hug.
Brody was home. His voice, so full of relief, his warmth and his presence made Freddie instantly relax. He laughed at his silly joke but he couldn’t help it. Everything about Brody was so infectious that just being in the room with him for what couldn’t be more than a minute had Fredde grinning from ear to ear. No matter what he thought about sleepy, little Norbury he knew he was home in this very instant.
“No, I wasn’t,” Freddie tilted his head back so he could see Brody as they spoke, “But they didn’t need me anymore so I decided to come home and surprise you but,” his features dropped to a more dull and skeptical look, “Somebody didn’t take it the way he was supposed to,”
Brody kept his arms around Freddie, scared if he let go, he’d disappear back to LA. He had missed him, but that was no surprise. He always missed Freddie when he was gone. Sure, he had his temp jobs and Lucy and even a few friends here and there, but it still didn’t change the fact that Brody always missed him, always felt like something was just a little bit off.
Brody rolled his eyes at Freddie’s accusatory tone. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were going to be getting home so late and I’m sorry I got spooked. But, I mean, technically, I was still surprised.” He said, giving Freddie a teasing grin. “And even if it wasn’t the surprise you thought at first, I’m really glad to see you.” He said, kissing his forehead. This was good. This was home. “I think even Lucy missed you.” He said, looking back at their puppy, who was standing on the couch next to them, looking up at the two. “Not more than me, but you know, enough.” He chuckled.

A scream. The first thing that happened when he opened the door was a scream followed by one of his own. Once his heart rate slowed and Freddie could assess the situation he found no real cause for alarm. In the living room was just his boyfriend and their sleepy puppy.
“Brody,” his accent came out stronger, as it usually did when he was stressed or upset, “What are you screaming about?!” Freddie slammed the door behind him, his pulse still pounding in his ears. The living room seemed fine, other than the Brody sized tangle of limbs and blankets on the couch. Freddie’s eyes kept scanning until he finally found the piece that put the clues together.
“You were watching more Dateline, weren’t you?” he asked dully. This was a typical thing. Brody would binge on late night television if he couldn’t get a hold of Freddie till he was too scared to sleep. He was like some preteen child at their one man slumber party.
Brody’s heart was beating out of his chest, and he was still a little on edge. It was only when he started coming off of his adrenaline, when he heard that unmistakable accent, when he registered those big, beautiful, brown eyes. Freddie. Freddie was here. Elation overcame him, and the man launched himself at the older man, a tangle of lanky limbs and clumsiness, but he didn’t care. He had to get to his boyfriend. He wrapped his arms around him, hugging him tightly. He had missed him, this. He hated the visits to LA, everything always felt just slightly off.
“Freddie!” He all but sighed as he inhaled the man’s scent, just holding onto him for a moment before he heard the man’s words. “Maybe.” He mumbled into Freddie’s hair, pressing a kiss into it, “but it wasn’t my fault. Lucy was insistent.” He joked, chuckling, kissing his head again, feeling so content, unlike the moments before.
After a couple of moments a realization dawned on him: Freddie wasn’t supposed to be home until tomorrow. He pulled away just slightly to look at his boyfriend. “I thought you weren’t supposed to be back until tomorrow.”

A week. Well, a week and a half. It had been a harder work week than Freddie had in the past few months but with rehearsals growing longer and the premier date coming closer, the final scenes needed to be hammered out. The hours at his laptop may have been long but it was all paying off. The set was impeccable, the cast was stellar, and the script was situated enough for Freddie to return home.
His flight had been scheduled for the next day but, upon making a curious call, he discovered that he could change for an earlier flight for a fairly minuscule fee. Typically, Freddie craved the city. The endless stream of life, the quick yet steady heartbeat that pulsed through the streets. Walking with the other hundreds of people moving down the streets made Freddie feel like he was a part of something far bigger and it was that feeling that made him feel most complete.
And yet, he could feel a tug. It was more than the usual guilt that clung to his spirit whenever he was in LA. A part of him was begging to return to Norbury, much to his surprise. So he did. He took the earliest flight he could. It was quick flight, about an hour or so, and with a short shuttle ride he was home. It was past two in the morning but he was home.
All the lights were off which didn’t surprise Freddie too much. Brody was probably fast asleep with Lucy curled up right next to him. The thought made Freddie smile but also yearn for that same rest. He unlocked the door and eased it open as carefully as possible, easing his way into his home.
It was late, Brody wasn’t sure how. Easily past nine, even ten o’clock. He had stopped paying attention after he got done doing the yard work for the elderly widow in a different part of town. He had been exhausted when he was home, completely ready to veg. Freddie still wasn’t home yet, wouldn’t be until the next morning, so he ordered some food and plopped onto the couch with Lucy and had stayed there practically the entire night, eating dinner and enjoying his dog, trying not to think of the empty space that was usually filled right next to him. That was his favorite part of the temp jobs - how easy it was to not think.
A couple hours ago (he thought), a twenty-four hour mystery marathon came on, full of murder and abuse and crime. Brody didn’t know why, but he loved mysteries and scary things like that. They freaked the crap out of him, but it was a good kind of freak out, he was pretty sure. Besides, with Lucy at his side, he was fine. So it had gotten dark since the sun went down, and he hadn’t bothered to turn on the lights. It added to the atmosphere, although admittedly, it did set him even more on edge.
His heart leaped into his throat when he thought he heard the door unlock. He listened for a couple more seconds, but didn’t seem to hear any more noise coming, so he figured he was just imagining it, freaking himself out because of the stories on screen. Still, even as he turned back to the television, he couldn’t help thinking that he wasn’t alone. His heart hammered a little more, and he was almost afraid to look, despite how ridiculous that was. He took a deep breath before glancing over his shoulder, seeing a shadowy figure of a man. His eyes widened, his heart squeezed in his chest, his adrenaline going a million miles per hour.
“Ahhh!” He yelled, falling back a little on the couch, Lucy stirring only slightly, trying to figure out what all the fuss was about.
“Wonderful, I would love to have you as my secondary best friend…Please don’t take offense to that,” she added with a giggle, “to the Tea House!”
“Not offended - as long as your primary best friend is super cool.” He joked, speaking lightly. “To the Tea House!” He agreed, grinning and beginning to walk in the direction of the shop.
‘’I’m thinking of having an end of the summer party at the inn. Something for the whole community. Barbecue, drinks, a band. A big blow out type of thing that everyone could enjoy. If there’s enough of an interest, that is.’’
“Ooh, that would be so cool! Do you guys have a pool? I haven’t been to the Inn in ages. It would be cool if there could be this whole barbeque and music and stuff and a pool.”

“Nah, not yet, but according to the paper, it’s the most scrumptious diner in town. Probably comes along with the fact it’s the only diner in town, but like, nobody seems to question the credibility of it. Let’s head over there now. You got a car, or are we doing it infantry style?” He questioned. “We can lament about our sorrows on the way. You mentioned interests, and that’s probably one of my big ones. Pissing and moaning. If you didn’t figure that one out already.”
“‘Scrumptious’ is definitely a word. I mean, I’m not gonna lie and say it’s the best food I’ve ever eaten, but it’s really good and the staff are pretty nice most of the time and it’s always there. I think that’s why people love it.” He shrugged, indicating that he didn’t really know one way or the other. “We can take my car, if you want.” He chuckled, and shrug nodded. “I try not to piss and moan too much, if you can believe that. But if you wanna piss and moan, I’m here for you.”
“Do you usually get late night cravings? There’s never anything good to eat at my house either. I have my stash of cereal but my brother hogs the cupboard space with his stupid jars of peanut butter.”
“Eh, it depends, happens more when Freddie’s out of town because there’s no one here to judge me for eating late at night. Ooh, that’s a good idea. But who needs that much peanut butter though? Enough to take up most of the cupboard? He should share.”
