Oh it's my favorite show of all time, and has fundamentally changed my relationship to television.
I was recently telling a friend that I love how much the writer, because it was mainly one guy for so long, didn't care about what the audience wanted to see, and wrote what he wanted to write. I feel like a lot of people could learn from that nowadays hahah
This might be shocking, but I actually found Beecher's dynamic with Schillinger more compelling, and in turn, more interesting to watch! Not in a romantic way obviously, never, but once they started having each other's family killed, I was like just what the fuck is going on here.
That said, I did love Keller's duplicity, as someone who also loved O'Reily's Machiavellian tendencies. Granted, O'Reily's 'friendship' with thee madman that was Adebisi is still a highlight for me; Adebisi, as a whole was a highlight for me. Tom Fontana really knew how to write a baddie.
I remember watching every episode of this show and constantly thinking, "There's no way this plan goes through" and then the most despicable crime is committed like it's an average Tuesday 😭 God I love it.
I was actually just talking to my mom about Schillinger again, because imagine getting shit on by your own 'prison girlfriend', the one you just made dress up in drag in front of hundreds of men, in front of other prisoners, and the Aryan Brotherhood is still scared enough of you to let you lead like INSANE
All that said, if there was any semblance of romance that did it for me, it was Dr. Gloria Nathan and Ryan O'Reily, they drove me wild. My best friend, the one who was reading the Captive Prince series with me, actually, was watching the show with me and we both kept thinking, "Obviously she can't......can she?"
Then you add on Rita Moreno playing a nun who drinks hard liquor that works as the prison psychiatrist and B.D. Wong as Father Ray Mukada who just wanted to help Miguel OH my god
God this is all making me want to rewatch this beloved show, but I know it's going to be like the first time I watched it where I try to watch like six episodes back to back but then something exceptionally violent happens and I need to decompress hahaha
I'd say maybe I'd just watch the first season of Interview with the Vampire again but it's truly the only show to ever make me feel as white knuckled teeth bared as Oz, it's Interview with the Vampire and the way those two kiss in front of Jesus Christ himself.
