Quote from the poem Lady Lazarus by Sylvia Plath.
I do it so it feels like hell. I do it so it feels real. I guess you could say I’ve a call.

He had just gone to get himself a pack of smokes and a beer after a long day of work. Working for Amazon as the new repair guy for some of the faulty mechines to avoid another strike really made a man crave the simple pleasures but he hadn’t expected to run into his boss’ wife near the booze aisle.. Wait wife? Or ex wife? Stuart had heard that Stephen was no longer married. Shame, she really was a beautiful woman but he didn’t try to pay attention to any of that. Not when his own marriage had crumbled as well.
But everyone expected that time bomb to explode so he did his best to act like everyone else about it. Unsurprised. Hearing the woman address him the McCormick straightened up doing his best not to look so down in the dumps but it was all he really felt..
“O-Oh, Mrs.. Er Linda, nah I’m fine.. Just gettin off from work and pickin up a beer everythin’s alright”
He lied but like the guys at work had said. ‘everything is gonna be alright in the end’
The way Stuart held himself was... similar to Stephen. It was a surprise to Linda, really - from a glance, the two of them looked like they were from completely different universes. But Linda had heard rumours. Linda had spread rumours. The McCormicks weren’t a healthy family unit. Linda could understand, from one worn down parent to another. Stuart looked like Linda felt.
“Are you sure?” Linda kept her distance, still not sure how friendly she could act. Stuart was Stephen’s friend, after all. She swallowed. “If you ever need to borrow our bath or washing machine--” Linda sighed. “Well, there’s one less person in the house who washes themselves.”
It was the first time Linda had mentioned the divorce to anyone outside of the family. She glanced down, tucking her hair behind her ear, feeling queazy. “Just take care of yourself.”

Stephen loved going to Hawaii. It was the one time of the year that his mother and father had less of an eye on him all the time, and he could go out and play by himself, without having to worry too much about them. He knew that he couldn’t go off and do anything he wanted… He still had to be a good boy. Always, always be good, or the consequences would be grave. That, and he’d be grounded.
And being grounded while on vacation… it was the worst way he could spend it. He’d know. He had done it before.
Sitting in the sand on the beach, he had been looking through the soft, hot to the touch sand, picking out seashell that he thought were pretty. He knew if he made a necklace of them, his mum would call him a faggot, or she’d straight up tear it apart… But she didn’t have to see it. It could be his own little secret. She’d already be mad at him for sitting in the sand in his nice shorts held up with suspenders, and his knee-high socks getting stains from it as well.. No need to make it worse.
His thoughts were interrupted when he heard someone falling over behind him, and jumping up, he quickly spun around, almost tripping over himself. Squinting over in the light he could see a girl in the sand, struggling to get up. Dropping the seashells he ran over to her.
“A-are you okay??” He asked, reaching out his hand, offering her to take it so that she could get up again.
Linda’s cheeks burned. She refused to look at the boy at first, trying to help herself up, but soon realised that she was too shaken to do so. Back home, if she fell, she landed on soft snow. Now, she was in sand, grainy, scraping at her skin that was barely ever exposed. Swallowing away tears, Linda finally looked up at the boy.
Oh-- he looked like a nerd.
“I’m okay,” Linda half-laughed, finally taking his hand. It was warm, and sent a jolt across her skin as she realised that she had never held a boy’s hand before - until now. This didn’t count, did it? She took her hand back quickly after being helped up, embarrassment burning on her cheeks.
Please don’t make fun of me.
“I-” Linda bit her lip and glanced down at herself. Her white pants had gotten a little dirty. She frowned. Spankings for that. She glanced to the side, where her shoes had flown off. One was half sticking out of a tide pool. Ugh, if that was dirty... “Thank you,” she mumbled, not wanting to look the other kid right in the eye when she was so embarrassed. “There aren’t any ledges like that in Colorado.”
stephenstop:
Stephen’s heart fell at the sight of Linda running away from him, a sight that he never thought that he’d ever have to see. He couldn’t describe the feeling, but it was like his inner most core was being pulled right out of him. Stuck to Linda, who got farther away from her as he stood there, dumbfounded, unable to move.
Then he snapped out of it, and his legs began to move almost on their own. Almost, because his mind was getting more clearer with every step he took, until he finally caught up with her.
She was panicking. She was going to hurt herself if she didn’t calm down, and then when she got home… he was certain that he’d never see her again. She’d disappear again, and he feared that she’d start to avoid him…
He couldn’t let it get to that. He refused.
He placed his hand on the moving wagon, gripping it so that she had to slow down until they both stopped. He wasn’t going to suddenly grab her, he knew better than that… But he wasn’t going to just let her get away either. He just had to ignore any people that were looking their way, some glaring at his back, knowing why they had parted ways… even if it was only half the story. This was a decision they had made together, and he’d take responsibility for it.
“Linda. Linda, look at me.” He said as he tried to catch her eyes, his voice steady, even if he didn’t feel as calm and collected as he usually did when he had to bring her back down to earth.
“If you don’t mind.. I’d like to join you.” He said, careful with what words he chose. “It’s nicer to go shopping with a friend than going alone. I know where the free-range eggs are, too. I’ll show you.”
God. He was praying in the back of his mind that she’d accept his company. He didn’t want her to think that this was the last time she’d see him. He didn’t want this to be the last time.
Linda’s chest was convulsing. She loved Stephen. She knew that. It was the only thing she knew. No, she knew more than that. She knew how to cook the perfect crispy bacon. She knew Kate Bush’s discography off by heart. She knew that she stopped having romantic feelings for Stephen
years
ago
She choked, hacked, doubled over, her heart forcibly pushing its way out of her oesophagus, a laborious effort, and eventually slapping onto the floor, oozing from the ventricles that had snapped away from her body
Linda’s head snapped around, Stephen closer than he had been before. Her hands were still on the trolley, and her heart was still beating, too loud, in her chest. She had almost forgotten to breathe.
Stephen’s words took a while to sink in. It was like her heart wanted to protect itself so much, it momentarily pushed Stephen out of her memory entirely. Eventually, Linda let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding.
No one was looking at her but Stephen.
“I think,” Linda sighed, her grip on the trolley loosening, “that would be nice.” Still, her hands shook. “You know I can never find the free-range eggs.” She might still cry, but at least now, she could hold it off for later.
But, for whatever reason, Linda had thought that Stephen would never want to see her again. That his new lifestyle would somehow change him. That her Stephen was dead. But she could... still have Stephen.
Slowly.

Do onto your neighbour as you would have done upon yourself.
Those words rolled over in Linda’s mind as she stared at Stuart McCormick. If she looked that dirty, she’d want someone to come and talk to her. Ask her if she needed any help. After all, if she was that dirty, she’d just want to die.
“Stuart...” Linda hesitated, approaching him carefully. He wasn’t the type of guy Linda spoke to often. Well... Linda just didn’t speak to guys often. “Are things, um, okay? Do you need a change of clothes or a place to bathe or anything?”

The Marshall family didn’t vacation much, but when they did, Linda was happy. Happier than when she was at home, anyway. At least on vacation, the amount of chores she had to do were cut short by half.
Plus, Linda finally got some time alone to herself. Back at home, she didn’t have a latch on her door. What she wanted, more than anything, was to be able to venture out alone. And so, she made her best effort to get lost in Hawaii.
Her bare feet tickled against the blades of grass. Back in Colorado, she had to wear a sweater constantly. Here? She walked around in a t-shirt, showing her calves in her short pants. With her shoes in hand, she ran through the grass until she saw the beach. She stood at the edge of the short cliff, toes against the warm rocks, looking out in amazement. Sparkling sea. Amazing blue sky. Sand for miles, uninterrupte-
Interruption.
Who was that on the beach? Linda held a hand to her brow and squinted. He looked familiar... distracted, Linda took a step forward. Another. Ano-
Before she knew it, Linda had fallen the short drop and onto the sand. She groaned, trying to push herself up, slipping on the unfamiliar surface. Gosh, she hoped whoever this was, she’d never have to see them again.
I wanna be more active with Linda but I know housewife Linda can be pretty heavy so hit me with a like if you wanna interact with teen Linda! Multiverse friendly!

stephenstop:
Stephen felt his entire body freeze up when Linda approached him, and he just watched her as she put the eggs in his basket.
He knew what was going on. He knew Linda better than anybody, and once more, she acted like things were fine. Their marriage, his infidelity, their relationship… and a part of him wanted to play along. Wanted to laugh heartily at her words and tell her they’d just have to do with this, that anything she made was just as good anyway..
But he couldn’t. He was supposed to protect her, keep her grounded… and he had sworn to her that he still loved her when they separated, even if he agreed that this was better.
This was for the best. This was good. This was what they wanted.
This was for her.
But looking over at Linda’s eyes, he knew she wasn’t happy… yet he reached into his basket, gingerly putting the eggs back into her hands.
“Linda… I’m not here with you. You remember that…”
He swallowed thickly.
“Right?”
What do you mean, Stephen? We’re here with Butters. Butter. Milk, eggs-- the shopping list-- six eggs, not twelve--
Linda blinked. Everyone was looking at her, everyone was, Stephen was looking at her, and she was shopping, but everyone’s eyes were fixed on her, she knew they were. She was making a mockery of herself, of her marriage. Her family.
Those didn’t exist anymore, Linda. Those don’t exist. It’s you and Butters, now.
“Right,” she whimpered, fighting the temptation to literally wrap her arms around herself to keep herself from falling apart. “Right. I just-”
Stop looking at us, we’re normal, we’re normal
“I’m making sure... you’re still eating right,” Linda choked. “I need to get back to... my shopping.” She held the eggs close to her chest. They were the last thing Stephen would give to her. Her head ducked down and she turned, almost running back to her trolley, her heart about to explode in her chest--
Go home go home go home you shouldn’t have left in the first place if you have just waited an hour then this wouldn’t have happened why did you leave the house when you did why did you go in the first place breathe, Linda, you can’t drive home if you’re having a panic attack grip tighter to the trolley don’t fall over stop stop. Stop.
Don’t look back at Stephen.
