Richard Artschwager / Jürgen Drescher up till the end of Januanry.
Richard Artschwager / Jürgen Drescher
In collaboration with Mai 36 Galerie, Zurich
Curated by Owen Houhoulis
This exhibition pairs the sculpture, paintings and multiples of Richard Artschwager and Jürgen Drescher. Whereas Richard Artschwager’s work is filled with a dry wit and irony, Drescher tends to somberly hint at the weight of possession and existence. Both rely heavily on their own stable of materials - Drescher's sculptures are of aluminum, bronze, resin and metal plating, while Artschwager’s are of formica, wood, celotex, and rubberized horsehair. Each work speaks in its own charismatic voice and in both we see that the familiar is disorienting and reality is transformed and reconfigured.
These two artists can be rearranged and paired in countless ways. Light and dark, real and unreal, pure and impure, yet their ability to fascinate, amuse and engage us is infinite.

Summer Exhibition
Matt Mullican: Large Paintings from 1987-89
On view this summer at Brooke Alexander are four large scale multi-paneled rubbings by Matt Mullican, Roundhouse – Red, 1989, Yellow Generator Room, 1989 and History OverOpera House, 1982-87. Consisting of 20 panels in total, each approximately 10 feet tall, these works are not only impressive in scale, they are conceptually complex and are among the artist’s most powerful works.
Mullican has been creating work in a wide variety of media for four decades and has developed a complex system of symbols and colors to categorize the structure of the world. His examination of symbols and their effect on our perception has been principal in his art since the 1970's. The palette for all his work consists of yellow, red, blue, black, green and white. The primary colors correspond to different categories of his world view.
Matt Mullican has exhibited extensively in major venues around the world, including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Basel, Berlin, Brussels, Munich, New York, Porto, St. Gallen, Vienna, Washington D.C. and Zurich.
Our summer hours are Monday – Friday, 10-6.
We hope to see you in the gallery this summer!
