1) Cubism- I was really inspired by the cubism movement because of all the sharp geometric shapes it utilized! I decided to use blue and orange squares and small rectangles in my background because I really enjoy using shapes to develop a unique and mesmerizing background!

2) Abstract Expressionism- I decided to incorporate abstract expressionism into my work because I like how freeing it feels! I am usually caught up in being a perfectionist but this movement was the opposite of perfectionism so I decided to utilize it and challenge myself in my piece. I decided to do various black lines of differing shapes overtop my cubist squares and rectangles. I also decided to use one of my old pieces that I didn’t like and incorporate it into this piece (I ripped a quote from an old piece and some of the background out from the old piece)!

3) Surrealism- I was also really inspired by the surrealist movement and I had enjoyed making a creature for that assignment so I decided to create another mythical creature and incorporate it into my piece. I wanted to develop a character that blended in to the back but also stood out. My creature is named Shrubby and she is inspired by the natural world (the ability for plants and animals to camouflage themselves had helped inspire her!).

ARTH 102 Final

I started my background with the “Cubism” unit. I loved drawing a bunch of shapes and trying to make them piece together, so I figured this would be the best way to start my final! I outlined the shapes to make them more blocky.

Next, i used “Formal Elements” to create a gradient from left to right inside of the shapes. I used warm colors on the left, and moved to cooler colors on the right. Keeping the color inside the shape helped me give some contrast against the white background.

Finally, i used “Your Art Voice” to add a sort of “message”. This piece is supposed to be a keepsake, so I wanted to make it something I would hang on to and maybe put it on a desk or a wall in the future. This led me to choose the words “Decorating with a moment of joy” because as much as I thought I would dread this class (I don’t claim to be creative or artistic in anyway), I enjoyed the change of pace in my assignments this class gave me.

Final

For my final piece I incorporated Fauvism, Surrealism, and Impressionism.

I used Fauvism by using vibrant colors throughout the piece. I used reds, oranges, and yellows on the lady, while using calmer tones on such as purple, blue, and greens in the background. I use wavy strokes in her hair to show her happy energy in contrast to the calmness of the background.

Surrealism was used by me making normal objects with different ones. I made a shirt into a snake and a banana as a phone. Eyeballs for the clock and flowers. I want to show how casual the character is while interacting with this odd environment.

I used Impressionism by trying to put the image in a certain point of view. I wanted to make it feel like that the viewer's point of view is as if they're interrupting the lady during a phone call. To immerse the viewer into the image.

This class was so much fun, I love learning about the different styles and movements.

FINAL ASSIGNMENT:

For my final project, I created a piece that included three art movements: abstract expressionism, surrealism, and formal elements. 

I created my background using two art movements: formal elements and abstract expressionism. To begin, I created a warm-colored ombre background. Then, I used various shades of cool colors to create abstract lines on top. The contrast between the warm and cool colors ended up being very appealing to look at. 

The last art movement I incorporated into my work was surrealism. For this part of my project, I collaged a character using magazine cutouts. My character's name is Cookie Man, and he likes to watch sunsets, swim, and collect sneakers.

Dada Assignment: My puppet's name is Archie. He loves spending time outdoors, going to amusement parks, and singing. I made Archie out of a toilet paper roll, flossing picks, empty contact cases, and straws. I also had to use paperclips to weigh his backside down because initially he was front heavy. Lastly, to make him mobile I used dental floss.

This is Bob the eye Blob! He is a floating orb from another planet! His favorite activity is to float around and watch the humans do their daily activities- he finds them fascinating! When he isn’t flying around he loves to snack on pizza and dorito’s! He can also change color based on his mood!!

Futurism Assignment:

The phrase I chose to represent my relationship with technology as a child was "Overnight Takeover." Looking back on my childhood, I realize that my immersion into technology wasn't gradual but all at once. For instance, I have very specific "pre-technology" memories from my childhood, including riding bikes, dancing in the rain, and even playing ghosts in the graveyard with neighborhood friends. However, I only remember a few times like these after I got a cell phone. I like to think that it was a coincidence that getting a phone had nothing to do with why these outdoor activities seized. However, now I realize that my generation might be the last to have these fantastic childhood memories. Nowadays, technology is being introduced much younger, and kids would rather stay close to the house where there is wifi than explore and be adventurous. Therefore, I am thankful I witnessed technology's takeover because I got to exist in a pre-and post-technology world.

Hey guys! For this assignment, I used acrylic paint and an aluminum foil technique. I put blobs of paint on my sketchbook, blurred them together, and then dabbed with aluminum foil to create a textured effect. I really liked this technique and will try to incorporate it into some of my other art throughout the class. Have a great week :)

Hello! My name is Brooke Bobbey, and I am from Youngstown, Ohio. I am a senior health and society major with a minor in Spanish, psychology, and philosophy. After I graduate this spring, I will attend LECOM's Dental School in Bradenton, Florida.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading books, napping, and watching sports. My favorite sports teams are the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Cleveland Browns (which you can tell from my photo), and the Cleveland Guardians. I grew up playing multiple sports and am an outfielder on the school's softball team.

I am excited about this class and can't wait to see everyone's art!
