Abstract Expressioniam

Through my final art project, my work was inspired by the seasons changing here at school. Going from winter into spring is such a beautiful time, where trees and grass start to become green, flowers grow and are full of bright colors and birds are freely chirping through the air. My artwork is a landscape scene with mountains, water and blooming flowers. The first art history lesson that inspired my work was fauvism. Through Fauvism, artists incorporate many bright and vibrant colours. I believe the colours I used, specifically in the flower bushes; pink, yellow, blue and red truly represent spring energy. As well as the bright green grass and clear blue water. Looking at this painting I feel it represents a refreshing feeling that good weather is ahead!

The second art history lesson that inspired my artwork was impressionism. Through the lesson I learnt that impressionism means that the moment isn’t still/frozen in time, it is lively and in motion. Although it is difficult to paint something moving on a canvas, I tried my best to represent the flowers blooming and in motion of growing into beautiful flowers. As well as adding birds flying through the air enjoying the weather. I tried to work on painting with a loose hand, trying to create waves in the water near the shore. Overall I had a great time creating this piece and enjoyed all the art assignments throughout the semester!

Dada Assignment

My puppet is inspired by the movie Wicked. It has accents of green and pink. I decided to use a leftover Halloween costume crown, cut up loofa as a pink skirt, the hair is a feather. For the legs I used a beaded necklace and cut out shoes, with the arms I cut up pasta noodles from a recycled box. Lastly the eyes and smile come from magazine scraps!

My puppet danced to the song Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked. Floating through the air on such a beautiful sunny day! 💚💗

For this weeks project I made a necklace. This was made out of a cardboard box as the pendent, an avocado bag around the beads and a ribbon. The leaves are from a fake plant I found as pieces on the side. This was a fun week!

Surrealism Assignment

I’d like to call this piece the “Weekender Bag”.

I decided to create a purse out of trash around my house. My base started with a Walmart bag to hold the structure of the purse. I then cut up an old loofa to wrap around the straps of the purse, then using boxes of pasta noodles, seltzer/wine boxes, pink basket stuffer string and an old st.patricks day necklace as a charm for the bag.

It is a highly functional and spacious bag that I recommend for your next night out!

Futurism

This futuristic device is called the humanoid. It is an AI generated robot that can complete tasks just like a regular human. Some of these humanoids have been placed as bartenders, concierge, or deep sea divers, or they work in factories/warehouses helping with inventory.

I believe this creation can have a positive impact on our future. The new developed technology can help increase studies in the medical world, help complete tasks at a faster rate and offer guidance in certain situations. Although this is a fairly new piece of technology I believe there is a lot of potential in this creation and can have a strong impact on the world!

In my drawing I incorporated the humanoid, looking at certain things that go on in its so-called “brain”. I included the words futuristic, humanoid and technology as my experimental typography. I included lots of bright futuristic colours as well!

I had a lot of fun doing this assignment. I really like how we had to take three different pictures to show how our art developed and our thinking process. For me doing abstract assignments like these come much easier and allow me to be more creative!

ARTH-322 Arte Povera

For my Arte Povera assignment, I created a flower-themed inspired checker board. The black squares are cut from my Nespresso box. The triangle “pieces” are pieces of a paper plate that I cut out and colored. The small blue flowers are also cut out from the design on the paper plate. I then drew in different colored flowers in the background to continue the flower theme. This was a fun assignment to transform “garbage” into a creative piece of art.

For this Cubism assignment, I decided to sit down & draw different shapes with each color marker. With circles, squares, triangles, zig zags, and some random shapes I made my background. I then cut out some lace pieces from a magazine and centered them with some circles I drew to make an abstract type face.

Fauvism Assignment

For this weeks project I decided to draw my roommate Brooke. As you may assume from my drawing, Brooke’s personality is very bright and energetic. She is a very caring and kind person who always wants the best for others. She is always first to lend a helping hand and make sure everyone has what they need.

I decided to chose bright colours for my portrait as she is an overall bright energy. I didn’t want to include any overly dark colours as I believe that would negatively portray her personality. I believe the pink, orange and yellow represent her well and portray the type of energy she exemplifies. Looking forward to next weeks assignment!

Impressionism Project

I decided to choose Sidney Crosby’s golden goal in the 2010 Winter Olympics. During the final game against the USA, Crosby scored what was later named the “golden goal” in overtime to secure Canada’s gold medal.

As a Canadian, I vividly remember this moment, where I was watching the game with my family, and the anxiety I felt during overtime. To this day many hockey fans will still talk about this moment as it goes down in history.

These two countries always have a rivalry and it always comes down to the wire. This win was an iconic moment as the Olympics took place in Vancouver, Canada, the home country had won the game and helped secure another Canadian hockey title. This will be a moment in time I never forget!

Pop Art Assignment

One product that I kept seeing in the advertisements in my magazines, which kind of surprised me, was eye drops. In 2022, the global eye drop market was estimated at $15.6 billion. The growing eye drop market is predicted to be because of increasing cases of dry eye and visual strain, which is hypothesized to be linked to digital strain put on the eyes in the ever increasing technological world we live in. One fun fact about eye drops for dry eyes is that they work by lubricating the surface of the eye and mimicking natural tears in this way. I think that some eye drop advertisements can lead to unnecessary purchasing of eye drops. People when using eye drops can develop a dependency on them, and advertisements can normalize daily use of eye drops. Eye drops could also prevent people from going to and speaking to their doctor about persistent dry eye, which could be a sign of other deeper, underlying medical issues.

Midterm Project

I picked this post of Kim Kardashian as it is very obvious there has been photoshopped used. The biggest giveaway that editing has been used is the un-natural looking car in the background. This unfortunately is not the first time the Kardashians have been called out for their poor photoshopping skills. Looking at this photo I feel sad how people go to extreme measures to make their bodies look more appealing and fit to societal standards. In my drawing I replicated this warped image, by highlighting the distorted car and bumps in the road/curb. With the painted lines on the road going inwards instead of their normal direction.

I think with AI becoming more popular, there are going to be more tools at our disposal to use. I also believe it is going to be harder to tell when someone touches up their photo, with new technology. For the outside viewer, thinking celebrities have no imperfections will only create a negative example for younger females. This can negatively affect any viewer's mental health as they may compare their body, face or appearance to a fake photo wondering why they do not look like that.

Ultimately photoshopping will never be stopped. We will find this tool being used across many social media platforms for a long time. I do believe society will never stray away from photoshopping. Although the extreme may die down, it will become less obvious to notice when people use certain apps to change how they look. As of recently I have noticed facetune and AI technology being used to touch up photos.

This week I was inspired by Caitlyn and Keegans artwork. I strongly believe these two pieces of art have similar aesthetic’s as they both strongly represent a natural vibe. Both pieces incorporate many shades of green, browns and other earthy colours. I decided to take my own approach to this aesthetic by creating my own peaceful nature vibe. I included a collage of flowers at the bottom of the page which ties in Caitlyn’s art, while also including a tree with greens and browns to incorporate Keegans piece. Although, both Caitlyn and Keegans master pieces included many shades of warm tones such as brown, green and yellow, I wanted to also include my own twist by adding brighter colours of flowers drawn around the tree. With a bright pink bird floating on a branch!

Overall, both these artists did a great job expressing their art through these pieces. I enjoyed taking their concepts and using it as inspiration for my own art! Looking forward to next week’s task :)

Formal Elements Assignment

For this week’s assignment I chose to use blue and orange as my complimentary color background. With my fashion outfit I decided to use a fox head with a tail and style it! This fox is wearing a nice warm tone shawl with black pants. Simple but cute! The fox is holding a bouquet of flowers with a purse, suppose they just went shopping. Lastly the fox has coffee cups for feet to keep them energized throughout the day!

I enjoyed creating this piece of art and look forward to our assignment next week!!

For this week's assignment I decided to draw inspiration for my artwork from the album "The Lumineers", by The Lumineers. For my artwork I decided to go for a vintage aesthetic because the album cover includes an old polaroid that I feel gives a nostalgic feel. I was inspired by this and decided to use the polaroid in my artwork by blending different collage pieces that reminded me of the songs on the album but that also drew from the nostalgic and vintage feeling of the original picture on the album cover. My favorite songs from this album are "Dead Sea" and "Flowers in Your Hair". For the song "Dead Sea", I decided to include elements that reminded me of the song like the ocean and seashells. I also included my favorite quote from the song that I burned the end of to tie into the vintage vibe I was going for. I then included a cool photograph I found of a woman with flowers in her hair that I felt represented the song "Flowers in Your Hair" and also blended well with the other collage pieces. Other songs that inspired collage pieces I chose include "Flapper Girl" and "Stubborn Love". Overall I genuinely enjoyed making this and it made me feel even more connected with the album!

One of my favorite songs from It Was Good Until It Wasn't by Kehlani is "Can I" because of its smooth, moody vibe with introspective lyrics. The song carries themes of longing, curiosity, and emotional distance, which inspired me to create this piece. I wanted to capture the other side of the album cover, of someone observing from a distance, much like the emotions in the song—being present but not fully engaged. The wall in my artwork represents emotional barriers, while the person looking over it symbolizes the desire to connect but feeling somewhat restrained.

To make this piece my own, I included a doghouse and a water bowl inspired by Kehlani’s album cover, where she wastes water while holding a hose. This detail reflects themes of carelessness, loss, or emotional neglect, reinforcing the song’s undertones of uncertainty and detachment. However, I changed it so the water bowl was half full or empty, depending on how you look at it. That is what I have been trying to change in my life. While the original cover has a dark and intimate atmosphere, I translated its message into a different scene that still carries a sense of isolation and contemplation but a different view of the wall.

I chose to reblog Olivia’s piece as it stood out to me. I enjoyed how you took your own spin on this album cover and dove deep into the meaning of Kehlani’s songs. The attention to detail is amazing!
