Why homemade?
Homemade face wash is a gentle, safe, easy and effective alternative to commercial facial cleansers. Oily skin is much more susceptible to blemishes, blackheads, whiteheads and large-appearing pores. Those with oily skin require more attention and special care when it comes to skin care routines.
Most commercially sold facial cleansers contain chemicals, fragrances, and other harsh ingredients that actually increase skin redness, irritation, oil production and blemishes.
Benzoyl peroxide, a popular ingredient found in many commercial face products, is touted for it's blemish-fighting abilities. However, most who have used products containing this vicious ingredient, usually encounter severe redness, flaking, peeling, dryness, skin swelling and irritation.
While benzoyl peroxide may reduce blemishes short-term, the side effects of its use can be long lasting. Benzoyl peroxide generates free radicals in the body, which accelerates the aging process. Yikes-that is definitely NOT a skin care goal for anyone!
You don't have to waste your money on expensive products promising to deliver "miracles" that simply just don't happen. You also don't have to harm your body by using dangerous chemicals to help clear your skin either.
Fortunately, there are healthier and more natural options that will sweep away impurities, clear breakouts and normalize your skins oil production. As an added bonus, homemade face washes are super inexpensive to make and totally customizable.
This DIY face wash recipe is jam-packed with skin-loving ingredients that are not only nourishing but also effective at keeping those pesky blemishes at bay.
These are the ingredients you'll need to make this awesome face wash...
Castile Soap is a natural, toxin free alternative to conventional soaps which typically contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). SLS, a common foaming agent found in 90 percent of personal care products, can cause eye damage, respiratory depression, and skin irritation. Unlike other natural soaps, castile soap produces a super sudsy lather without the health risks. Pure castile soaps contain only vegetable-based ingredients such as coconut or olive oils, which makes it suitable for those who are vegan too.
Organic, Raw Honey has immense health benefits. Honey is naturally antibacterial, absorbs excess oil, and helps to prevent skin blemishes. It also promotes healing and minimizes scar formation. Honey also is chock-full of skin-loving minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and enzymes that are totally nourishing for facial skin. Honey alone could literally replace ALL of your chemical-laden blemish treatments!
Jojoba Oil Now you may be wondering, "why on Earth is Brooke telling me to put an OIL into the face wash that is intended for my already "too" oily skin?" Well, here's something totally crazy about jojoba oil...it very closely mimics the sebum (i.e. oil) found in our own sebaceous glands. Using jojoba oil helps to normalize excess oil production. It is also noncomedogenic, meaning it won't clog your pores. Jojoba oil fights off the bacteria that can lead to blemishes too because of its high iodine content.
Essential Oils The essential oils contained in this specific DIY have superior skin supporting qualities for blemish prone skin. All have the ability to reduce redness and irritation, support cellular renewal, absorb excess oil, and possess astringent-like qualities-all of which are super important when striving to achieve a more clear complexion.
Here's the recipe...
Ingredients and supplies:
8 ounce Foaming Soap Dispenser
1/3 cup Castile Soap
1 teaspoon Organic, Raw honey (I purchase mine locally)
1/2 teaspoon Jojoba Oil
2/3 cup distilled water
8 drops of Tea Tree essential oil
4 drops of Rosemary essential oil
5 drops of Geranium essential oil
5 drops of Frankincense essential oil
*It's critical that you use a foaming pump for this recipe to achieve the correct consistency.
Preparation:
Add the castile soap, jojoba oil, and raw honey into the empty foaming soap dispenser. Swirl gently to incorporate the ingredients. Next add the essential oils, swirl again. Finally, add 2/3 cup of distilled water, tighten the cap completely and give it one final shake.
Use this facial wash daily, morning and night. You may also use it as needed throughout the day to cleanse the skin gently, without having that "tight" feeling.
