Super Lurky Rn
Hey guysss I haven't posted in ages but I stay on the lurks 👀 haha Basically I'm pumped for the Dance Off and will be freaking out even if I don't say anything. It's so weird how much a year can change things. I remember lying in bed all last TDA just watching everything, single, and at living at home. Rn I'm only lurking bc I'm playing Wii in my own apartment with my fiancé which is just weiiiiirddd. Anywhos. There's my life update. Happy TDA all😊
the first JUMP of the season is in 3 weeks
@andrewinghart @ ur tags Miami! So basically a lot of Stars dancers for sure as well as Coral Reef Senior High i believe.
Possibly Stars, Dance Town, Dance Attack (a few Dance Attack kids compete with Coral Reef too so idk), DanzForce Extreme, Miami Dance Co, etc. All amazing studios!
Doesn't Kalani usually randomly attend this so she's qualified for best dancer right off the bat?
SYTYCD Next Generation Rant
Correct me if I’m wrong, but are the dancers’ solos independent projects from the show? What I mean is are the dancers responsible for the choreography, music, costuming, etc? If so, I sort of have a problem with this. Some of the families may not be able to afford a well-known choreographer’s work or a custom costume. I understand this is an issue in the dance world prevalent in the dance world already, but for a competition show involving children, I especially don’t think money should be brought into it. Each contestant deserves equal opportunities and if one can pay for exclusive choreography over another kid, I don’t find that fair. At the same time, I can’t really think of an alternative because the solos are a time for the kids to express themselves and show off their individual talents and personality. I guess if you assigned each contestant a choreographer and made everyone wear the same costume that could stifle the dancer’s creativity. Idk. Maybe the kids should improv? Thoughts?
It seems that way! Tate had Will Loftis do her last solo and Jordan’s was done by what seems to be her teacher back at her studio. I did really love them both, but it does seem very unfair to me.
I wish they just had to improve tbh. With a really standard costume…
I don’t really see it as unfair because I think in competitive dance there will never truly be a level playing field.
I’ve grown increasingly annoyed with the ever-rising number of “ability categories” at dance competition (used to be there was just regular and “novice” for first-year competitors, now it’s like there’s three to five ability levels at each comp depending on years dancing and hours training per week). Personally I think these categories are partially created so that studios can walk away from the comp with more awards, and therefore are more likely to come back, but it’s created a whole shift in the way we look at dance and what’s an “advantage.”
There are a few reasons why I don’t actually think from a competition standpoint, this is unfair:
There’s nothing that objectively says that someone like Travis Wall or Will Loftis is “better” than, say, a choreographer at one of the kids’ studios. Remember when Bostyn’s La Vent solo came out and 50% of people here loved it at 50% of people here thought it was just meh? The skill of a choreographer is subjective.
There are advantages all over SYTYCD. Some people have been dancing longer. Some people are older and more developed. Some people train more hours per week. Had Sophia made it on the show, they would have had to compete against a girl who was a world record holder who trained essentially as a full-time job.
Technically, everyone on that show has had access to choreography that another kid can’t get (unless, of course, two contestants happened to come from the same studio), because they all have access to THEIR own studios and teachers.
There’s nothing stopping the kids from just improvising a solo every time.
I think to me it’s the kind of thing that doesn’t seem fair in theory but when I put it into practice I don’t see a lot of fairness across the board. In the end, because dance is still an art and not a sport, you can’t just create a set of extremely hard rules (”must not pay more than [x] for a solo, must not have more than [x] tricks, solo must contain [x] turns and [y] jumps”) it loses the romanticism and, yes, the subjectiveness of it.
I see what you mean about the subjectivity and of course an affordable costume and improv performance could be more successful than an expensive solo. It’s up to the dancer what they do with that 90 seconds. But it’s likely that a Travis Wall solo or $500 custom costume will appeal to commercial audiences more than a solo choreographed by the young dancer the self or a cheap bra top and shorts. I don’t think it makes sense to compare dancers’ abilities to the circumstances under which they perform. It’s like apples and oranges. Yes, some dancers have better technique and others are more expressive, but that’s the whole point of the show. Dancers are competing, putting their talents head to head. It shouldn’t be about money, but that’s what it becomes when some dancers have access to resources others don’t. The resources available to contestants during the show should be equal to ensure a fair competition. Sure a dancer’s previous training and opportunities shape their performance on the show, but the producers can’t control that. They can, however, manage contestants’ choreography, costuming, etc. during the show. I can’t think of a way to make things perfectly just, but more could definitely be done to improve the current system.
I disagree. In the same way Jordan did a lot of her work on her skill herself. This logic would lend credence to saying that dancers who had access to hours of training with the best teachers cannot compete on the show because of dancers (like Jordan) who didn’t have access to those resources.
Yes, I see where you’re coming from in that “fancy costume well know choreographer” seems like an unfair advantage but it’s also not fair to penalize those kids for simply having those opportunities.
Like if Tate has access to Will Loftis choreo, it’s not fair for them to say she can’t use it because maybe Jordan does not have that access.
It could turn out that Jordan’s teacher from home is potentially better at choreographing than a well known person, but just isn’t as known because maybe they limit their social media presence or don’t work at a popular studio.
There’s no way to know. Nothing in a competition like this is ever gonna be 100% equal playing field. You go into it knowing that.
Like “I’m giving you all average choreography to make it ~fair~” doesn’t really make sense either.
Granted, there was one instance during season (3?) where they all had to do the same solo so that was cool, but even then someone will always have an edge depending on what style of dance they choose.
I can’t handle this
i literally had a channel on mute and a men’s soccer game playing even though I wasn’t watching it.
When I looked up there was a dude on the ground writhing and holding his leg in pain. It went on for 30 seconds at which point he got back up and kept playing with no problem.
But not before “stumbling” as he got up.
This shit is real and I’m dead.
Guys Brooklin and Daylyn are back at club!!!
Alexamoffettstudios no longer follows them!
I so dislike this whole “student leaves studio, unfollow immediately.” I still follow all my old students and we talk all the time! It’s a great way for me to witness and appreciate their growth.
I agree with this strongly as well^^^
I feel like that is so petty to unfollow them just because they left. There is a time and season for everything and if their parents feel like you as a teacher don’t fit into that right now then she should be adult enough to respect it. She should realize it is not a personal attack on her.
Same so childish…really hate that. It’s like they unfollow them to symbolize cutting them out of their life..
ok.. I’m not saying I disagree that unfollowing just because they left is wrong bc I do agree 100%, but I just looked and Alexa DOES still follow Brooklin and Daylyn on her account (alexamoffett), she just unfollowed on the studios account, which seems to follow only choreographers and the girls who dance at the studio.
SO THIS MEANS SOPHIA AND AVERY ARE GONNA BE WORKING WITH ALEXA OHHHHHH MY GOD Idk how I feel about it bc I’m not huge on her choreo but it’s fucking lit bc she’s probably gonna be posting a lot of videos of them!!!
As excited as I am to see more of the MBA kids, I’m really hoping Alexa gets past her “choreography slump”, so to say, from this past season. I loved her old stuff and I think that she could really be a good fit for the MBA kids once she perfects her style
(But I also hope that the MBA kids continue to work with whoever led Limitless because their staff really seems to know what they’re doing)
Totally agreed Her style has changed so much and I really enjoyed her vintage club dances and I’m hoping she can give them the quality choreo they deserve!!
Yup and I wonder if her style will end up adapting to fit the MBA dancers because they all have such a technical edge
(and same I wish they stuck with the name Limitless it just sounds hella cool.. and then you pair it w “at Master Ballet” and its like OH SHIT)
Her having access to more students potentially will be really good for her.
I think her choreography really comes into it’s own in larger groups.
Her solos are always hit or miss for me. Either I am living for it ( like with another level and mad world) or I’m just...meh.
Her groups have always been stronger imo. I’m alive only to repeatedly watch Work Song and A Thousand Years and Somewhere Only We Know and Counting Stars.
I think groups are where she’s best.
Me: OH YEAH SOMEONE REBLOGGED MY POST. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THEIR TAGS ON IT!
Me: Oh, they didn't add any tags.
Am I the only one who finds it a bit annoying when accounts post dancer's names in the tags and not in text. Especially with docweek and underrated dancers week like how are people supposed to get into new dancers if they have to do all this work to find out their name
MAKE A TEXT POST
“All this work” you literally just have to look at a tag

See. It’s easy anon.
I think they mean when people post gif sets and it gets reblogged 30 times and you have to go digging for the original to find out who it is when it would be easy to put the name in the text of the original post so it will carry over into reblogs.
This doesn’t bother me as much as it seems to bother this anon, but I will admit not having to do that would be nice.
you’re really cute and its ruining my life because i think about kissing you all the time
Okay so I loved that
This looks sooooo similar to the one Lacey and Danny did.
It’s not just cause of the song. I remember the “hip hip. chin chin.” part being exactly the same.
This is boutta be litttttttttttt
JT AND EMMA ARE SO CUTE
I feel like this is easier than Emma can handle.
