Good Monday morning. When was the last time I did this? I haven't been here in a long time. But I I've this place. I also haven't had a day off since ... the last time you got a day or two off. Last Friday was great but I was relaxing after four days of loopy hours and long city commutes. Now, I'm home and at my desk. I've got a lot of work to do and a lot of progress to make. I feel like today is a good time to start sharing a day (off) in the life.

Anyways, y’all better start saving your fave fanfics and fanart under the Disney labels cause it looks like they’re trying to curb fair use/fanworks and I’m sure there’s going to be mass panicked deletions even though it’s probably unnecessary cause AO3′s legal team will fight for us.

Note that Disney would have one Hell of a time serving C&Ds to authors at AO3 - because there is no “contact author” option other than leaving a comment.

They’d have to contact the SITE, which is to say, the Organization for Transformative Works, to deliver a C&D order or a DMCA takedown order.

And the OTW is not going to remove fics because someone sent a letter that says “actually those characters belong to me and you can’t use them that way.” The OTW was created to FIGHT that kind of claim. They are ready. 

Don’t delete your fics out of fear. WE OWN THE SERVERS. They can’t threaten the hosts into deleting anything.

And if Disney thought they had a strong legal case against fanfic, they’d’ve shut down the archive a decade ago, when it was penniless and unknown, instead of waiting until it had won several battles in Congress and got worldwide acclaim for a Hugo Award.

Opinion | The Lies Hollywood Tells About Little Girls

Britney Spears and I learned the same lesson growing up: When you’re young and famous, there is no such thing as control.

There is so much about this which applies not just to girls in Hollywood, but to the way we talk to little girls and little boys in general.  

Consider how often when talking to a baby or toddler who is a girl people tend to say “you’re so pretty!” “Look at that beautiful hair!” “Look at that adorable outfit” etc.  Consider how often we look at boys and talk about them being strong and tough.

When they get into school, what Mara Wilson say is true even of kids not doing Hollywood press junkets - we ask girls if they have boyfriends.  We ask boys if they are “getting all the girls”.

What do these things teach? They tell girls from an early age that their worth comes from their looks and whether or not they are attached to another person. They tell boys that girls are to be conquered.  It’s bad messaging - not to mention how it screws up a child’s mind when we’re assuming they’re all heterosexual before they have any idea what sexuality is let alone how they identify. 

We need to make much better habits of making conversation with kids asking questions like “What are your favorite books?” “What are you learning in school?” “What are your favorite things to play?”  Instill in them early the qualities that truly matter and we’ll be better off
