Stephen sensed an energy from the woman before him that was incredibly familiar to him and yet he couldn’t put his finger on why that was. He looked the other up and down, his brain running a mile a minute trying to remember who this was. Was she someone he fought before that just wasn’t significant enough to remember? 

Her name was on the tip of his tongue but no matter what, he couldn’t figure it out. Finally, he gave up trying to figure it out himself. “Have we met?”

shit    -----    he knows.      &   he’s probably angry.    (   she made him   stronger ,  smarter ,  in some days of old.  )    she doesn’t want to deal with that ,   it’ll be like fighting herself.

already nervous ,  familiar voice pulls the breath from her lungs ,   forcing a watermelon smile    &    an awkward          ❝   uuuuuuuuuhm ,   ❞          complete with false laughter   &   no eye contact.     opportunity presents itself in the form of something metal ,  that clangs loudly as she topples it to the ground ,  taking her leave on very fast foot.

There is this thing about active duty that just never let’s you relax. Not when you’re on leave, vacation, or even the hours between next shift. You never stop being active, even if the duty part is officially not active. Now not even being on the rooster didn’t stop Clint from being aware. He was too aware at all times for anything else. He could tell something was going on. He had seen the big ominous thing over New York - who could’ve possibly missed it? He could physically feel the difference in not being called to arms right away when it happened. It itched in his skin. It muddled up thoughts. He should be doing something, and not sitting still on his ass. Yet when he was pacing back and fort he came up short; and he didn’t do something.

There is this thing about active duty that makes your skin itch. And there is this thing that itches in the back of Clint’s head to the point that his eyes are hurting. His hands are rubbing as best he can to make the feeling go away, he even went as far to check in the mirror if he had anything in his eyes. The reflection he saw wasn’t alone. Beside himself was the barely see through vision of Loki.

There was this thing with panic that had you reacting before thinking, and Clint swore so loudly when his fist connected with the mirror, shattering it as completely as one could, shards raining down on the floor.

s m i r k    beguiling.   playing smooth when he is    just   as   confused   as the other.   one moment ,  he’s dying     &    the next  ?     here.    &   where is  ---  here ?    knowing god chuckles to himself   &   it sounds sinister ,   as the people of midgard see his smile as nothing but   t e e t h.   he knows.    a connection ,  it’s surmised  -------  from using such complex magic on such a complex person.

he waits   --------   one second ,    two...       let the man get his bearings.   patient is the ‘villain’.   calm   /    understanding.    less of a   villain   than a   victim ;   of unfortunate circumstance ,  roles  & high standing ,  so thinks he.       

THE     KING     IS     DEAD ,        in either case.   dead   &   hanging on as a memory    /    a reflection.     a shadow of the real thing ,   pieces of him clinking to tile ,   &   what a beautiful sound it is --------  breaking glass.   freeing ,   like that of a crackling fire ,   cleansing.     born anew in the smoke  &  shattered bits.      LONG    LIVE     THE    KING  !

condescension ,  from a child no less ,  would almost certainly annoy most people ,  but it only gains a soft chuckle from newt.    (   though he’s no less wary ;  a child ,  but one that could very well be dangerous.   )                    ❝  ah ,  yes.    wizards are the same thing as ,  as witches.    they’re just ,  they’re just the males.    there are ,  i would say ,  a fairly sizable portion of humans that have ,  that have magic.  ❞                    words are accented with a mirrored smile ,  but guard is still up.    forgive him ,  it’s habit !

the smile widens as he watches the boy’s wandering gaze ——  it’s not often he gets to show anyone around.    (   it’s been longer than he can remember.   )    the child seems the curious type ;  perhaps he will actually be interested in the residents of the case ,  something that so rarely happens ,  it seems.    as he meets the stare of the other ,  a suggestion forms on his lips:           ❝  would you ,  would you like to have a look around ?  ❞          

explanation falls dim with the boy.    it’s a subject he cares little for  ,  even though he asked the question.

eyes lighten   /    grin spreads.         ❝  a look around ?    at what ? ❞          he knows.    he’s already given himself the tour   -------   not that he’d ever tell.         little secrets !    harmless lies !    creatures of all kinds have always stirred an interest.    (  once    upon    a    time ,  )  perhaps he’d have shown the wizard ,   settling this moment instead to manifest as metaphorical   s n a k e ,  small  & helpless ;   wrapping itself around fingers as if he is the one quelled.
