Check out Part 1 and Part 2!!Â
Let’s take the night off from caring bout tomorrow// Let’s take our minds off the things we can’t control// Let’s take our clothes off and jump into the ocean// Don’t know where we’re goin’ but it’s somewhere out there// We’ve got our whole lives left// To make some memories// Drunk nights that we forget// I will remember best…
The waves move slowly and steadily through the water, lifting each of the friends a little further from the sea floor that they’re standing on. The water is warm, almost as if they’re all sitting a giant pot of water that’s trying to boil, but not quite there yet. The sun is shining brightly in their eyes, causing each of them to squint, and at the same time they each worry about the possibility of sun burnt backs due to the sun also beating down on their backs. With all the heat around them, they’re all thankful to have ice cold drinks in their hands as they float thoughtlessly. Their conversation flows as effortlessly as the waters do to the shore. Elle has just been asked about the status of her application. She doesn’t know much, but she knows that she has a phone interview some time today. They thought is making her nervous. “Come to think of it, I might need to check my phone. I’ll be back in a minute,” Elle answers as she starts to wade back to the shore, where some more of their friends are sitting. Chase is beneath the umbrella, talking with Seth, the both of them listening to Jake Owens’s Beachin’. Elle rolls her eyes and cracks a small grin as she approaches her towel, where her phone is sitting. As she picks it up, she sees that her phone is dead. “If any body asks, I’m going to charge my phone,” Elle tells Chase and Seth before walking away, back to the apartment they’re staying in.Â
When Elle walks in, the first thing she does is walk back to the room she’s been sleeping in and plugs in her phone. She looks in the mirror and decides to change into dry clothes for the time being so that she can sit down and things of the such. Walking back into the kitchen, Elle notices Madison making a sandwich. “You decided to come in too, huh?” she inquires.Â
“Yeah, I was getting hungry,” Madison replies, putting her sandwich together, and taking a bite. “Why’d you come in?”
“I’m expecting a call from the school I applied to, today. I needed to charge my phone,” Elle says.Â
“Oh, that’s cool. Are you nervous?”Â
Elle chuckles softly, “Very.” At that time, a faint face time chime can be heard from one of the nearby bed rooms. Elle perks up and runs back to her room, where her phone is to see a call coming in from one of her friends from the college, a friend who happens to be on staff. “Hello?” Elle answers as the face time connects.Â
Looking at the screen, at the image of herself, Elle grows disappointed. If she had known this would be over face time, she would have spent some more time preparing rather than outside and at the island in the kitchen. Her hair is a windblown, sand spotted mess on her head. Her cheeks are a deep red, thanks to the sun burn she’s been working on for the past couple of days, and she’s wearing an old t-shirt.Â
“Hi, Elle, how are you?” Sarah asks, smiling.Â
“Doing well, just got back from the beach a few minutes ago,” Elle answers.Â
“Amazing. I’ve been having a lot of fun.”
Sarah smiles, “Well, that’s good. So, I was thinking we could just get this started. I have a few questions for you, is that okay?”Â
“Yes, ma’am,” Elle replies. And just like that, the interview is underway.Â
Elle grabs a thermos from the cabinet, filling it up mostly with punch and adding a little vodka before mixing it in and closing it up. A smile is stretching from ear to ear as she walks out the door, towel and drink in hand. She walks down to the beach, where all of her friends are. As she approaches the spot where all of their belongings are on the sand, she drops her phone and towel off before grabbing a floatie and meeting Silas, Brenda, Seth, Chase, and Madison in their little huddle in the water. “Hey, guys, how’s it going?” Elle asks.
“Seth just got ocean water in my drink,” Silas replies, sending dirty looks Seth’s direction.
“Oh, you can make a new one,” Seth replies, defensively.Â
“Or you can make me a new one,” Silas implies.
Brenda interrupts, “Have you already had your interview?”Â
Elle nods, “I have. They called a few minutes after I plugged in my phone.”
“I got in,” Elle smiles, “they’ll be sending me e-mails with information soon. I’ll be moving in during August.”Â
Everyone sighs of relief and smiles, with a hint of disappointment behind their eyes. It’s for the best that Elle got in, as Silas and Brenda have already signed on a one bedroom apartment’s lease and things are already starting to tie up for the two at ULM. Meanwhile, it’s also for the best that Elle gets out of Louisiana for a while. That being said, it’s going to be taxing to say goodbyes in a few weeks. Eight hours is a long ways away, and there’s no telling where the three friends will end up after so long.Â
“I don’t know about you guys, but I’m celebrating,” Elle smirks, shaking the thermos in her hand, “you should too.”Â
Hours have gone by, and the friends are all standing on the balcony of the apartment and listening to music and drinking. Some people are a little more gone than others, as Silas twerks to Josephine Beat, and Brenda watches, laughing. Elle snapchats the moment for the sake of memories later on, and out of the blue something happens causing Brenda to slap Silas. Silas immediately runs for the edge of the balcony yelling, causing Elle to laugh uncontrollably. How fortunate, she would have that on video.Â
At this point, no one is thinking of the future. Every mind is set on the now, and they’re all enjoying each other’s company. They’re enjoying the present, the things that they can control and see. “I want to go swimming again,” Silas says.Â
“We’ll go in a minute,” Brenda replies, taking a sip of the margarita that Silas’s mom had previously made.Â
Silas pouts, “Can we please go now? I’ve been wanting to go for a while now.”
A moment of silence passes before everybody agrees to put their swimsuits back on and go back down to the beach. It’s only a matter of minutes before all of the friends are ankle deep in the moonlit shores. Silas is the first to remove his shirt and shoes before running into the ocean. Brenda and Elle follow, taking off the clothes they put on over their swim suits, and running behind Silas.Â
The moment feels infinite, the waves carrying them softly wherever the water wills and wherever they allow. A small wave of sadness rolls through Elle’s heart and mind, as she thinks of a near future where she will not have these times with her best friends. What will life with out their adventures be like? What will a day with out being with Brenda feel like? How about a day where Silas doesn’t make her laugh? What will life be like with out Silas and Brenda nearby?Â
She sighs, realizing that there’s very little for her to worry about here. She can’t and won’t be able to do much about tomorrow, or the near future, for that matter. But, after two or three years, they will have a life time to make up for the time lost. Perhaps, they will move to New York after they all graduate like they said they would. Maybe, there will be bi-monthly trips out of state to see one another after they all begin to pursue their own careers. Whatever the case, they have a while to figure it out. They will have the rest of their lives to spend together. And, although they may wake up with clouded minds tomorrow, this is a moment Elle will hold onto.Â
These moments, the ones spent with these two, will never be forgotten. These are the times she’ll remember best.Â
