thinking about how Bruce and Tony are two sides of the same coin,,,,they both grew up extremely intelligent kids with abusive fathers - but Tony grew up in an external environment that praised his intelligence whereas Bruce likely grew up being bullied for it,,,,and yet they both so obviously see education and their intellectual prowess as an escape, Tony with his workshop binges and inventing and Bruce with seven phDs like he couldn’t bear to leave college and face the real world - and how Bruce’s intelligence almost killed him, but Tony’s saved him

and its just the way Tony sees this person who’s so like him and yet not, Bruce who is meek and timid and so uncomfortable in his skin, and thinks about how when he’s had nothing he’s had his mind and he wants that for Bruce.

its also in like the differences in how Bruce and Tony view their intelligence like Bruce is aware that he’s smart but it isnt the sum total of who he is? whereas Tony clearly wants everybody to know at all times that he’s the smartest in the room and it’s probably because intelligence for Bruce is an internal shield but for Tony, its an external shield.

Bruce knows that he’s intelligent and thats enough because he’s grown up learning to be content being on his own but Tony needs everybody to know he’s intelligent because if people don’t know he’s intelligent, what is he worth??

and its the different ways they react to being the smartest person in the room - Bruce doesn’t draw attention to it and is clearly uncomfortable exerting that he might know better but Tony uses it to his advantage to destabilise everybody else and gain an advantage over them

and they’re just such fascinating contrasts to each other and yet so achingly similar like Bruce could so easily be Tony and Tony could so easily be Bruce and they understand each other on a level that nobody else does because being the smartest in the room is its own kind of burden that nobody else could possibly bear and its just,,,both of them meeting on the Helicarrier and seeing each other and thinking i understand you, i know you, i see you

I really need to read or write the canon-divergent story where Steve realizes that the Winter Soldier is a victim before he realizes that the Winter Soldier is Bucky Barnes. Steve sees an equal — another super-soldier — and understands that he’s never had the choices Steve got; where so many of Steve’s friends think it’s crazy, but Steve decides to save him, anyway.

(And the Winter Soldier wants to trust this man — this target — who’s offering help, and kindness, even though he has got no idea why).

It’s reckless, and borderline suicidal, but Steve does it — Steve finds a way to offer the Winter Soldier a way out from HYDRA, to give him protection, Steve defends him from everyone who says that he is a monster — without having ever even seen his face.

Because Steve Rogers sees the best in everyone, and I want the AU where it is that quality that brings him back the person he loves most in the world. The AU where Steve takes the muzzle-mask off the Winter Soldier’s face the first time that the Winter Soldier lets him come close enough, and finds Bucky Barnes.
