Jason, exhausted and ready for the weekend, is on his way back to the dormitories from practice, freshly showered and wet-haired, when someone stops him in the middle of the campus garden grounds.
He’s not in the mood for it and is almost about to raise a hand to politely motion for them to not bother him, but the guy’s already spoken before he’s got a chance to.
“Are you a varsity?” says the guy in a red hoodie, then offers a small microphone in between his fingers for him to speak into. Another guy in a blue GSU shirt holds up a smartphone to record the interaction.
“Yes. Javelin,” says Jason impatiently, hiking the strap of his duffel bag further up his shoulder. He thinks about all the things he still has to do with the little time he has left that this little interview is taking up.
“And what year are you in?”
“I’m a senior,” Jason answers into the microphone, hoping this interaction isn’t going to that much of a waste of time.
“I’m Hank, this is Don and we’re sophomores. And we’re just messing around for social media. Trying to get some views,”
“I’m Jason,” he shakes the hands of both guys—a little habit he sometimes can’t stop doing since he was raised meeting people half of the time.
“Nice to meet you, Jason.”
“What are we doing for the ‘views?’”
Hank grins at him. “Call your mom and tell her you love her,”
“Alright. Don’t have a mom but…” with a shrug, Jason fishes his phone from his duffel bag, unlocks it, and taps on his speed dial then puts it on speaker. Maybe this isn’t a waste of time after all.
The phone rings for a few seconds before someone picks up.
“Hi, Clark, is dad there?”
Some shuffling about is heard from the other end.
“Mhmm?” says another voice.
“It’s Jason,” says the man named Clark.
“What is it?” says the other voice, Bruce, with some urgency, coming closer to the phone. “What happened?”
“Hey, Bruce. Was just calling to say I love you,”
“What happened!” Bruce presses, clearly concerned and worried.
“Nothing happened!” Jason insists, chuckling. “I just wanted to say I love you,”
The cameraman, Don, and the dude with the mic, Hank, are trying their best to keep it together.
“Okay, did you get arrested?” the tone is accusatory.
This time, Jason, too, is laughing. “No,”
“You are. You got arrested. For what? I’m going to take that bail out of your allowance, mister,”
“No! I didn’t get arrested,” Jason cackles. “I was just calling to say I love you!”
“And what else?” says Bruce, clearly distrustful of the call. For a moment his voice becomes farther away from the phone. “Clark, call Gordon and ask if Jason got arrested,”
“Let’s not jump to conclusions, Bruce,” says Clark, far from the phone but still audible.
“Nothing! I didn’t get arrested! Just, I love you, and that the pudding Alfred sent the other day was amazing,”
“Am I going to see you on the news? Is Clark going to have to embarrass himself writing about you on the paper for tomorrow?”
Jason’s laugh half-overwhelms the microphone recording him and his phone call. “No, no, I promise. I’ll be home tomorrow,” it’s almost as if Jason can see Bruce narrowing his eyes at him.
“You never call to just say I love you. You just call me when you need something,”
“Oh, well now I’m calling to say I love you, and that I should call and come home more often,”
“What’s going on? Did you crash your car? Are you hurt? In the hospital? I’ll know if you lie. Clark, call Tommy! And Harvey!”
“Bruce, I’m not going to call Gordon and Harvey. Or Elliot,”
“Please don’t call Mr. Gordon and Mr. Harvey. Or Dr. Elliot. Nothing happened; I didn’t get arrested, my car is in one piece, and I’m not in the hospital. I promise,”
“Nothing! Nothing is wrong,” Jason pauses for a bit and bites his lip. “I love you,”
There’s a pause. “I love you, too,” this time, Bruce’s voice is less distrustful and fonder.
“See you tomorrow, okay?”
Jason raises a brow. “What about Clark?”
“You don’t love Clark? He raised your barely home ass,”
This time, Don laughs into his arm and Hank moves away from Jason so the microphone and phone won't catch their laughter.
Jason shakes his head with exasperation but relents. “Love you, Clark,”
A boisterous, booming laugh comes from the speakers. “Aww, love you, too, bud!”
“Alright, I’ll tell Alfred you liked that last pudding. Don’t forget to bring back his Tupperware,”
Jason’s dad hangs up and the phone gets shoved back into the duffel bag.
“Your dad’s pretty cool,” says Hank, grinning at him, and Don offers him a fist bump that he returns with barely contained enthusiasm.
“Hell yeah, he’s cool,” Jason agrees with a grin. “They’re very cool,”
