Wide eyes shot down when little feet came bounding toward him, tiny arms wrapping around his legs and he couldn’t help but smile at the sight. Phoenix circled around him, hiding behind his long legs, explaining frantically why he was hiding. A laugh erupted from Kai’s mouth, his head falling back for a moment, then shook his head. These kids were going to be the death of him. And in that moment, Dakota came barreling into the room, but halted immediately at the sight of her father, an almost innocent smile crossing her face. “ Hey daddy! ” she sang, her hands hooked behind her back as she looked up at him, but his expression became a bit more stern. “ What’s this I hear about you threatening your little brother? ” he asked, narrowing his eyes on her, and her shoulders fell. “ But dad, he took the last of my —-” Dakota began to explain herself, but he interjected, “ Kota, look at me. You can’t play around like that. He’s your little brother, you have to look out for him … you have to look out for each other. There’s already so much against us, we have to protect one another, not fight. NOW, you two hug it out. ” Both kids groaned, but the furrowed brow on their father’s expression told them that they wouldn’t get off the hook without it, so they moved to give each other a quick hug. And with that, Kai smiled and stepped forward, scooping them both up into his arms, toting them back upstairs to their room.
