⚡︎ BIOGRAPHY ⚡︎
Born of two hardworking mages, Solara Breen was the much anticipated baby girl after four boys. Her lineage started off awkwardly - her father was best with magic of creation. He grew up poor, a family of lowly farmers on the outskirts of Withermore, honing in his magical abilities on crops, herbs, and food necessary to keep up with harsh winters. Her mother was from the heart of Cheridi, a quiet family responsible for last rites and funereal services of well-off townsfolk. They prayed to their gods of death for safe passages, and to keep their own family free of the cold embrace until it was their time.
Needless to say, opposites do attract.
Five children came along, one after the other, each with their own magical prowess of their own. The Breens were unsure how those capabilities would manifest, given how different their skillsets were, but each was different than the last, and out of control in their own unique way. One with an innate sensibility of how everything worked, creating prototypes and infusing magic with machinery. Another, all things plants and nature. The next, illusions and grand gestures and performances, followed by manipulations of matter and the very fabric of reality around the world.
By the time Solara came along, the Breens were bracing themselves for what other burst of magic would come along - but from an early age, they realized Solara didn't have similar outrageous tendencies, random spurts of magic that could damage. She possessed capabilities of healing, and the household breathed a sigh of relief. Finally, a Breen who wouldn't nearly knock the house down with their powers, and her father was even more excited by how closely his magic was with his daughter's. They were a very magic friendly household, not wanting their children to shy away from their abilities, but rather embrace them - the good, the bad, and the ugly. And Solara enjoyed how much good she got out of hers. She liked being the one to help the hurt, the control she had over her skills. The one to help put the pieces back together when the budding witches would accidentally destroyed. It gave her a sense of purpose.
Her and her brothers grew up close in age, and close in friendship. When Solara turned twenty, they set out on a journey of their own - they wanted to sail across the sea. There was a legendary city across the water called Gossamus, far out from Cheridi, from Destarin, that was rife with magic and magic users, and they wanted to try their fortune elsewhere. Of course, none of them had ever been sailing, and it was quite the gamble to assume that a city like that would be welcoming to outsiders, if legend was to be believed. But they grew up with parents who were encouraging, and wished for them to find the same luck and fortune they found with each other.
It was supposed to be a nine day journey. Three days into the sailing the boat was hit with a devastating storm. The seas rocked and the Breen children were forced to evacuate into a lifeboat. However, as Solara, being the youngest and the only girl, was led into the lifeboat, lightning struck right over them - and while she tried to protect herself with a spell, it only seemed to make it worse. It separated brothers from sister, and Solara was cast into the ocean as her lifeboat was destroyed. In pain and scared, she found a larger piece of driftwood, and hung onto it for dear life. Eventually, long after the storm passed, a cargo ship headed for Destarin spotted her and gathered her on board. Solara was shivering, cold, and her back and arms ached with lightning burns.
She mourned for her brothers, unsure of their fate, discovering that along with her emotional turmoil, the weather seemed to follow suit. Days of somber thoughts equaled clouds and rain and storms, and the mysterious scars along her skin faded and turned a whitish silver. And she wasn't a very good healer anymore, but her cries and screams and overblown emotions meant that blasts of lightning, or a personal raincloud, or sudden gusts of wind came to follow. Something about the storm they were caught in that fateful day must have altered her abilities somehow, she was sure of it. Especially when word of her brothers reached her, how they had survived and made it across the sea, and the skies opened up to beautiful weather for a week. Hoping to one day join her brothers in the splendors of a new and faraway land, she refused to make the journey until she had a control over her very hectic, very confusing new abilities - easier said than done.
