Esther Scroll by Aaron Wolf ben Benjamin Zeev Schreiber Herlingen of Gewitsch. Vienna or Pressburg. ca. 1735. This scroll contains the entire text of the Book of Esther. It is an example of 18th-century fashion for illustrated megillot among Ashkenazi communities, including scrolls produced by the scribe-artists of the so-called "Moravia School" of Hebrew illumination. The tradition of tiny writing arose from the micrographic illustration of biblical texts and the copying of verses for mezuzot and tefillin. The calligrapher, Aaron Wolf Herlingen, was a prolific artist who worked as a scribe in multiple languages in the Imperial Library in Vienna in the first half of the eighteenth century. Gift of Louis E. Levinthal to the Bryn Mawr College Library.

This whimsical board game, with its blinding powder, cabbage, meat, and cake tokens, has it all! Wild two-headed animals ravage the forest and hapless children must make it through armed only with odd grocery items! The game is a new addition to the Bryn Mawr College Special Collections as part of the Ellery Yale Wood Collection of Children’s Books.
We found, to our astonishment, that there was no copy of A Visit from St. Nicholas with the classic illustrations by Thomas Nash on the Internet Archive. We have uploaded a scan from the copy, c. 1874, in the Ellery Yale Wood collection of Children’s Books and Young Adult Literature. (Moore, Clement Clarke, 1779-1863. Visit of St. Nicholas. From Hoffmann, Heinrich. The English Struwwelpeter: Or, Pretty Stories and Funny Pictures for Little Children. Frankfurt: Literarisch Anstalt Rütten & Loening, c1870 (Twenty-fourth Edition).
Recently added to our collection of cookbooks, etiquette guides, and housekeeping manuals is a 1911 first edition of Fannie Merritt Farmer’s Catering for Special Occasions with Menus & Recipes (Philadelphia: David McKay). On pages enlivened by illustrations of a series of disturbingly carnivorous cherubs, Farmer suggested two menus for Thanksgiving. The selection of dishes included creamed corn and tomato soup topped with popcorn, oyster soup, celery with caviar, flaming sweet potatoes, turnip croquettes, squash souffle, chicken pie (in addition to the turkey!), chiffonade-dressed lettuce, cranberry sherbet, cream-cheese stuffed dates, vanilla ice cream, jelly roll, pumpkin pie, and mincemeat pie.

This week’s material is titled Woman Suffrage and Politics. Signed and authored by Carrie Chapman Catt and published in New York in 1923, three years after the addition of the 19th amendment, this book discusses the intersection where women’s suffrage and American politics met.
The book states that the movement was galvanized by two previous ones, dubbed “the man movement”, which attempted to evolve the control of governments in the favor of the people, and “the woman movement”, in which women wanted to be free of the patriarchal systems that law, religion, tradition, and customs bound them to. After these two were successful, suffrage was the obvious next step.
Later, in the political realm, a surprising majority were in favor of both black men’s and white women’s suffrage, but the rhetoric was that both were not likely to be accepted if done at the same time. The black man was decided to be first, with the phrase “this is the negro’s hour” being the common response to women’s appeals.
“The woman’s hour will come.” Between the adoption of the 15th amendment (March 30, 1870), and 1910 were 40 tiresome years of suffragettes wishing, waiting, and hoping for their hour to come. Eventually, the women’s hour came in the form of referendum votes on a state-by-state basis. Some states took the referendum to the supreme court, hailing unconstitutionality, but grievances were thrown out one by one. Eventually the 19th amendment was passed in 1920, and remains in law today and forever.
This reading was important to me because not only was it written by a woman who had to fight tirelessly for her rights, but also it came to me two days after there were two women on the ballot to be president of the United States. Regardless of where you sit on the political spectrum, the ability to bear witness to history is a phenomena to be cherished and celebrated. A meager 97 years ago, women could not vote. We sure have come a long way.

Kris Graves: The Testament Project exhibition is now open in the Class of 1912 Rare Book Room in Canaday Library. It will be open September 21 - December 18, 2016, 11 am - 4:30 pm daily.
Artist Statement:
The Testament Project is an exploration and re-conception of the contemporary black experience in America. More often than not, black people are portrayed in the extreme- either as very rich or very poor, they are demonized, infantilized, ridiculed, idolized or hypersexualized; and within the art canon there is a noticeable scarcity of black representation. In the more traditionally lit studio portraits, the subjects are named for their professions to emphasize the depth of their identities, beyond race. In the glowing portraits, I give control of the colored lighting to my subjects, in order to create a space that is participatory and empowered. By including my subjects in the creation of the scene in the use of color, I seek to create photographs that portray individuality in addition to their blackness. -Kris Graves

Kris Graves: The Testament Project
The artist Kris Graves will exhibit selections from his series The Testament Project, in the Rare Book Room on the first floor of Canaday Library, beginning September 21.
This collection of photographs, videos, and texts aims to represent and explore blackness in contemporary America. He photographs black-identifying individuals, but floods their portraits with bright, Day-Glo colored lights that powerfully disrupt assumptions about what blackness looks like.
An oversized, hot pink portrait of the artist's sister, Jessica (above), greets visitors at the entrance to the gallery, even as its juxtaposition with the permanently installed painting of M. Carey Thomas by John Singer Sargent insists that we remember our institutional exclusion of black students under her presidency. More than 20 photographs, subject testimonials, and a video will be on view. It is hoped that this exhibition will be an opportunity for institutional reflection, self-examination, conversation, and change.

A Devouring Fire
Today is the 350th anniversary of the start of the Great Fire of London. By the time the fire was finally brought under control, on September 5, 1666, it had destroyed 373 acres of the city - more than 13,000 houses, nearly 90 churches, vast numbers of commercial and government buildings, and the 3 western gates of the city. To commemorate the occasion, we have digitized a printed version of the sermon on the fire preached before the House of Commons, on October 10, by Edward Stillingfleet. Medieval book transport
You are looking at two ‘wraps’ (top), the outside and inside of a box (middle), and a leather satchel (bottom). What they share is not just their old age (they are all medieval), but also the purpose for which they were made: to transport a book from A to B. The actual reason for transporting books in these objects varied considerably. The wraps are late-medieval girdle books, which were hanged from the owner’s belt by the knot. The text inside - which was often of legal or religious nature - could be consulted quickly and easily: just unwrap it and read. The box (and the ninth-century book inside) had a more exotic use: the package functioned as a charm for good luck on the battlefield, where it was carried in front of the troops by a monk. The satchel, which also dates from the ninth century, was just a bag to transport a book while on the go - it was popular among monks.
