Bryony was always a quiet child. She kept to herself and would often be found in a corner somewhere, caught up in the pages of a book. Due to her isolating personality, she was relentlessly bullied for choosing to read the newest book instead of caring about the social hierarchies of childhood.
Growing up with a single father was unusual for her childhood, and often children believed that she was lying until Bryony introduced them to her dad. In a world rife with divorce, many found it hard to believe that Bryony’s dad wasn’t the one who initiated the split with his former wife and even decided to take on the care of his only daughter.
Bryony shared her love of reading with her dad, and despite any childhood bullying that she endured, Bryony knew that she could always come back home and her dad would be there for her.
At just ten years old, her mom tried to come back into their lives and sent everything into a tailspin. Bryony’s mom tried to claim that she had changed, that she made a mistake by leaving, but Bryony never believed her. Her dad was a far better man to ever allow her a second chance. And just as Bryony predicted, she broke his heart. She would spent years mending it as best as she could.
You’re in the Middle of the Ride
Her dad managed to hide his illness from Bryony until the inevitable happened. He was recovering from the cancer that ravished his body, when it came back. The doctors believed that he could fight it, but he was tired. He had spent far too long fighting against this unseen thing to keep it hidden anymore.
He kept it hidden because he knew that if he told Bryony, she would come running back to his side. And she did. She went from taking a break from college, to extending the break. She spent every moment by her dad’s side, even until the end.
To make matters worse, when Bryony tried to find her mom, she discovered that she had passed away two years prior in a car accident. Her mom had been driving while intoxicated and ended up nearly slamming into a car. She swerved to avoid the impact, and by doing so, crashed herself.
Bryony had suddenly gone from trying to figure out what she wanted to do with her life, struggling to figure out her major in college, to losing two parents in what felt like one fell swoop. She would manage to earn her associate degree but the grief would be too much for her to complete a bachelor degree.
It would take her a year to go through her dad’s things, all of the possessions that he would gravitate toward. In truth, he was a collector of various odds and ends.
She would eventually come across mentions of a place called Fire Island and its infamous Community House and Theater. Bryony was confused as to why a place like this would interest her dad, who loved fishing but never seemed interested in community theater.
Bryony tried her best to dig more into the life of her dad, but nobody in the town where she lived knew anything about Fire Island or the Community House/Theater. It was a mystery.
Bryony, being the lover of a good story as she was, decided that the best course of action was to go to this Fire Island herself.
She took an inevitable break from college, unsure if she would ever return, packed up all of her worldly possessions, and embarked on a journey that may lead to nothing.
Upon her arrival, she was informed that her dad had left a house located in Kismet to her, which he named “Buoyant.”
She quickly got a job at the local market, and with a load of questions that couldn’t be answered buzzing around in her head, Bryony understood that she was hellbent on finding the answers.
