“Nice to meet you Joel,” she said. “I’m Lorelei.” At his words, she couldn’t help but laugh and give him a smirk. “If my brother was here, he would be kicking your ass now, but you’re in luck because he’s not,” she added. When he moved her hair behind her hear, Lorelei bit her lower lip and stared at him. “You have a feeling huh? Anything can happen behind closed doors.” She wasn’t going to admit to anything but this random encounter with this man was proving to be very entertaining. 

“Well lucky me then. Anyway I’ve never backed down from a fight.” Seeing her reaction to his slight touch made him want to touch her more. But he decided to hold back, for now. “Anything huh?” His tongue clicked the roof of his mouth. “I wonder what your thinking about. This wasn’t what Joel thought his afternoon was going to be like. He was very interested in this new acquaintance.

“Well, I’m no expert, but I don’t think that you are going to lessen any pain by laying in a park bench.” She said, stating the obvious. The guy truly looked out of it, like he should at least be in bed with someone to serve him soup or something. She had no idea why he was in pain, she just saw someone obviously suffering and wanted to tell them to stop making themselves suffer more. “Did you even eat anything yet? I mean, I just mean that you probably should, I know this great pizza place if you’re hungry. Unless you want to lay there until you get pelted again, which is totally fine too I guess.”

Even though his eyes were closed the woman was still talking to him. He had no idea why. Joel thought it was weird that she seemed to maybe care. Especially since they didn’t know each other. For whatever reason she wasn’t getting the hint. So he decided to play along. “So what I’m hearing is your offering to buy me pizza?” He looked at the tiny redhead for conformation.

I promise passing up on an attractive woman won’t end you.” He’d done it plenty of times, but then again, he and Joel weren’t the same person. “Lucky for you, I’m not in the business of name calling.” He was too kind for that, always seeing the best in everyone. “We all have our own faults, man. No shame in that. All I’m saying is, you should try it sometime. Having a conversation with a woman without thinking about how attractive she is.”

“I’m use to trouble. And some of the time I don’t go looking for it. It just finds me. Well I need something to entertain myself. I’m far from the smartest guy in town. So my looks are my best feature. I don’t mind admitting it.” Joel usually hated talking. But his friend always made it easier for him. The two men seemed to compliment one another. “Fine, fine. So you’ll drop it. The next woman that approaches me. I’ll just talk to her, nothing else.”

She looked at him and raised her eyebrows. She was used to attitudes like this, but she really hated to. And she didn’t have to when she wasn’t behind the counter at work. Hell, she didn’t have to there either. “I apologized. I didn’t know the straws weren’t properly in the box, so that’s no my fault.” She told the man. “And I can. There was a root sticking out of the ground I didn’t see so.” She huffed at him. “Obviously. Can’t imagine who’d want to bother you, pendejo.”

His eyes narrowed when he heard the woman use a word in Spanish. “I have no idea what that means but your probably insulting me. Did that make you feel better? Not that you care but I enjoy being alone. So I don’t have to do this back and forth shit.” Joel signaled with his hands.

“Yeah, the three novels and my book of poems,” she said with pride. Lorelei then bit her lower lip and ran her hands through her dark locks of hair. If her twin brother had been there, he would have dragged her awya and glared at the guy, but luckily for her, he wasn’t “Maybe you could teach me improve those skills,” she said. 

“That’s uh, cool. I’m Joel by the way.” Yes he was impressed and a bit intimidated. His eyes lit up when she flirted back. “You don’t waste much time do you?” Joel asked. “I don’t either. If two people are both into each other just go for it. I’ll teach you whatever you want.” His fingers tucked a few strands of her hair behind her ear. “Why do I have a feeling you’d be a top student?”

“Same as people, right?” she looked at him knowing very well that cats could be very difficult to handle. “Some have shitty personalities as well,” she commented with a smirk.” Lorelei’s eyes then widened and she dropped her hands once the band aid covered the small wound. “I…” she closed her mouth to open it again but no sound came out. Instead, she began to pick up the things she had dropped and put them all inside her bag again. Zipping it, she took a seat on the grass next to him and nodded. “Both,” she nodded. “I’m pretty lucky in that aspect, not many writers can live of their work or get published, for that matter.” 

“Shit, you got me. That’s true.” A small chuckle came from Joel’s lips. “Looks like the writer has nothing to say to that. Tsk, tsk. Guess you have some skills to work on.” His eyes quickly looked her up and down. Wait, your book has been sold in stores?” Joel was defiantly impressed.

“Yeah, I am,” Lorelei said. “She had three cats back at home and fed a few strays that dared to come into her yard too. Writers were famous for atracting cats and she seemed she was no exception to the rule. “Wait a second,” she looked deep inside her bag and pulled out a simple white band aid. “Got it!” Carefuly she put it over the wound. “Well, here I am, touching you again.” 

“I’m sure you want to touch me longer than that. Cats have shitty personalities.” Deep down Joel was relieved the woman found a white plain band-aid. But he was trying his hardest to hide that. For a few minutes there was an awkward silence. Joel had never been a great conversationalist. That was one of the many reasons that he prefered being on his own. All he could hear was their breathing and some birds in the distance. He finally said “Is writing your hobby or do you do it for a living?”

“I didn’t say that I didn’t like that you touching me.” Joel clarified with a hint of a flirtatious tone. His hands swiped away the contents of the women’s purse from his legs. His eyebrow raised. “I’m not wearing a pink band-aid with a cartoon cat on it.” He cleared his throat. “And no I’m not a cat person. I’m guessing you are. Three strikes Ms. Writer.”

“Writer’s block,” Lorelei said. “It’s so terribly frustrating when you have a whole book inside your head and can’t put it into words for some reasons,” she added with a groan. “But that’s no excuse. I’m really sorry,” she touched his arm for a few seconds. “I didn’t hurt you, right? I mean, you don’t have to go to the hospital?” A pen could be dangerous and she could have hit his eyes. 

Joel lifted up his sleeve to reveal a small gash, that was dripping drops of blood. “A band-aid will do the job. It isn’t like I’m gonna lose my arm.” He noticed right away her hand on his arm. “So you like to throw pens and touch random strangers?”

Seven years and multiple vacations led Franny to have a good idea about all the places on Fire Island and what shortcuts she could take here and there when she was trying to get back the Surf’s Out faster; especially if she had some stuff she was carrying like now. She was hurrying through the park and usually she was good to know where she was going, but she missed a root of the tree sticking out and it caused her to drop the bag in her arm with some napkins and straws in it for the restaurant. She saw it hit someone in the shoulder and her eyes widened. “Oh, shit. I’m sorry.” She said and quickly grabbed the back. “It… didn’t hurt, right? I mean, it’s only napkins really so it shouldn’t, but you’re okay?”

“Shit, shit.” Joel grumbled under his breath. “Of course the napkins didn’t hurt. The straw poked me in the fucking eye. He led out a deep sign and found himself rapidly blinking with his right eye. “I guess your so clumsy you can’t even walk without spilling something. Just keep on moving, alright? I don’t want to bothered.” He snapped at the brunette.

“Maybe you need some strong coffee. A squirrel’s surely better then to get shit on by a bird. I’ve seen that happen too.” It was more common then one might think. But surely by the other’s attitude he wasn’t the type to see the worst side of things.

“Nah, I don’t drink coffee. I need the hair of the dog actually. Yeah, yeah I get it man. You’ve seen a lot of things happen. Are you going to keep listing them?” Now it seemed like Joel wasn’t going to get the peace he set out for.

Oddly enough he decided to go visit a local park. He remembered coming to this specific park when he was little. Not much brought him joy from his childhood. Before things fell apart his family attended these recreation grounds frequently. Settling down on an aged oak tree, Joel closed his eyes. Feeling the warmth of the sun on his skin mixed with the grass was a nice sensation. He felt at peace. Until an object slammed onto his shoulder. “Fuck!” Joel shouted and quickly opened his eyes.

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better. Maybe that’s why Ryder found himself at this park after all. It certainly beat being at home. A portion of the male was a homebody now but on certain occasions he found himself forcing to go outside to enjoy the little things. Yet that was a difficult task sometimes. Nonetheless here he was. Suddenly though he was broken out of his range of thoughts by a yell. The culprit being a squirrel that must have fallen from the tree that was overhanging the other. “I guess that’s one way to be woken up.” Not that he was any sort of early riser but morning still lingered in the air. “Always expect the unexpected.” Surely weirder things had happened.

Joel growled in annoyance. He didn’t know if he was more irritated at the squirrel or the other gentleman. He rubbed his forehead a little and rested the back of his head against the tree. “Whatever man. I don’t need some fortune cookie saying right now.”

“I’m so sorry!” Lorelei yelled when she realized that the pen she had thrown in a small fit of rage had hit someone. She had frustrated because she had been staring at the blnak pages of her notebook, completely bloqued for the past few days. Poems were good and had no trouble coming out, but her book, she was struggling it. Picking up her bag, she moved closer to the man and sighed, kneeling next to him. “Fucking hell,” she cursed. “Are you alright? I didn’t hurt you, yes?” If her brother had been there he would have laughed at her, he always did and seemed ot enjoy when she, in his colorful words, “fucked it up.” But it wasn’t compared with the stunts he pulled sometimes. “I’m really sorry about that,” she said again. “It seemed the pen is mightier than the sword after all.”

He looked at her confused. "I don't know what that even means. I'll get over it. I've had much worse thrown at me. But the fucking point of the pen got me in the arm. Why are you throwing pens around?" Joel gave the apologetic woman an angry look.

“Look out!” Skylar called out, only a bit too late as the ball connected with Joel’s shoulder. “Shit.” Jogging away from the pickup soccer game she’d joined only fifteen minutes prior, the blonde made a slight face as she approached the older man. “Okay, okay. We both know soccer was never my sport but…” Leaning down, Skylar scooped up the ball and tossed it back over to the makeshift field before taking a seat down next to him, an apologetic expression coloring her features. “Did I get you good? I’m sorry. In my defense, I was aiming for the goal… way… over… there…” She chuckled, gently bumping her shoulder against his.

Joel tried not to crack a smile. Skylar had always been so sweet and upbeat. She was one of the only few people who could get him to smile or even laugh. “Really? Sky. Jesus. If you wanted to take me out I could always give you some pointers.” He rubbed his now bruised shoulder. “Who the hell let you play soccer anyway?” He teased the blonde.

Drinking was Joel’s favorite past time. He had always done it alone. But Niko had become a good friend of his. So naturally drinking with him was something that he did often. “Since you hardly ever make a move, it doesn’t get old. How can you pass up so many women? I don’t have the willpower, man.” He took a few sips of his beer. “If you rather just sit here and stare at me, be my guest.”

“It’s not always about making a move. Sometimes I just want to have a beer in a place that isn’t my house,” he offered in return, the suggestion to go out almost always an innocent move. He didn’t need to hit up local singles to have a good time. “It’s easy. You just get a good beer and stay to yourself. You should try it sometime.” He didn’t mind Joel’s company and if anything, he needed someone like the other male to push him out of his comfort zone. “Anyone ever told you that you’re kind of a jackass? ‘Cause you are,” he grinned, only joking. “It’s almost like you forgot how to have a normal conversation with someone. As long as you don’t start dropping lines on me, I’m not moving from this seat. Not tonight.”

"I have no problem staying to myself. But when a attractive woman appears I just have no control." Hearing the other male insult him, made him laugh. "Yeah, I know I am. I've been called much worse. I didn't forget I just think I've never been good at it. Even I have my faults." Joel chuckled softly at his small joke.

Bryony decided to hang out in the park simply because she was bored and wanted to see more of the island. She was walking around, minding her own business, when she saw a couple of kids playing some kind of ball sport without care for anyone else who was around them. Before she could think to tell them to play somewhere else, the inevitable happened and they slammed their ball right into some poor unsuspecting guy. When he yelped out in pain, they all scrambled, leaving Bryony in their wake.

“Yikes, that must’ve hurt. I mean, obviously it did.” She choked on her own words. “They really busted your balls. Er–I mean, their ball busted yours. Not that your balls are busted, or bad–or…I’m going to stop talking now.”

He gritted his teeth. This new pain on top of his hangover was so much more worse. The culprits who had hit Joel with the ball were nowhere to be seen. Instead a petite redhead was rambling in front of him. One of his eyebrows raised up when he heard the woman mention his balls. "My balls will survive. You can stop talking about them now." He mumbled. "Well at least this new pain is a distraction from my other one." Not caring if the stranger was still standing before him, he winced and went back to resting his eyes.
