via Instagram’s @ed_cooper_photography - This is the first of a series of classic images I will be posting from our 1962 first ascent of the Dihedral Wall on El Capitan, in Yosemite Valley, California. Most of them haven’t yet been seen. In this one is a collection of climbing gear put together in Seattle in 1962 for an attempt on the face of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley, California, by Jim Baldwin and myself. At this point we had yet to enter Yosemite, and we planned to attempt a new route using some of the techniques we had used on the first ascent of the Grand Wall of the Stawamus Chief in British Columbia the year prior. Image taken in 1962 with my Voightlander Perkeo 2 ¼ x 2 ¼ square folding camera using color transparency film. The color was very poor and the image too dark, so I converted it to B&W and was able to get a fairly good image. _____________________________________________ T-306606 – Climbing gear for El Capitan, 1962, CA
PHOTO COMMENT: Jim Baldwin and I got all this gear together before we even went into Yosemite Valley with the idea of climbing a new route on El Capitan. This was very early in the era of big wall climbing. We held a climber’s party in Seattle and invited all the climbers we knew to come and contribute gear for this project. We got many contributions and the result is seen here. _____________________________________________ Another classic ©Ed Cooper Photo 🌄. Specializing in nature images that are unedited.
