10 Reasons To Date An Older Guy

Like a bottle of fine wine, or organic lube, somethings get better with time and age. While the following list of attributes is not true of all older men (because some of them are in their 80’s and still on that bullshit) older guys tend to just come with less problems, less headaches and less drama. I tend to always go for older guys, but I’m an old soul. I like the conversation and like I mention below the sex is off the chain. They’ve been on the earth longer than you and picked up a few tricks along the way. I usually go 10 years above, but I’ve gone further.

For those that frown on older guys just remember you’re aging as you read this. Now on to the list:

Experience: from the bedroom to the boardroom, older guys usually, though not always, have a better sense of what’s going on. And will be happy to share it with someone younger/not in the know.

Decisiveness: After a certain age, a man usually knows what he wants or doesn’t want and isn’t afraid to vocalize that. Maybe it’s because we realize we don’t have all the time in the world and don’t want to waste it being uncertain.

Mature Physicality: I’m constantly amazed that there’s so many younger men who are physically interested in a more mature body, whether it be for the hair, the salt & pepper color, a belly, those distinguishing lines in the face — whatever it may be, there are younger guys who specifically look for those traits.

Money: Let’s face it, some kids are gold diggers. Some older people are, too! An older guy is more likely to be more settled, and a mature relationship with finances can be an anchor during those restless days of youth. In my case, I always tell them I’m a sugar-free daddy.

Mentor-ship: A lot of young men are at a loss in terms of job and educational advice. They’re not getting it from home and they’re not getting it from the culture. Many of them may have run up against a homophobic brick wall and have no idea how to approach their future. Older gay men have already been through this and can provide some guidance and perspective.

Kinks: OK, back to sex and not only that, but an entire way of looking at things. Lots of younger guys find they like things on a more, um, wild side. Older men are more likely to have worked through whatever issues – homophobic, shame-based, whatever – surround some kinky activities, and again, are happy to share experience and knowledge with someone younger.

**Direction: **Some young people honestly don’t know what to do and are happier when someone puts some structure into an otherwise scattershot agenda. Contrary to conventional thinking, total freedom is not necessarily always liberating.

Home: An older guy is more likely to have a home that he owns or has rented for a long time, along with some of the creature comforts and sense of place that come with that: patio furniture, TVs that work, matching dishes, more than one set of sheets, etc. Not everybody wants to live like a grad student forever.

History: Older men have the perspective of history from their own lives as well as (most of the time) a knowledge of the gay community and the struggles we’ve gone through from Anita Bryant to AIDS to D.A.D.T. and marriage equality (and a zillion things in-between). This kind of oral history or learned experience is priceless for someone open to learning about it.

Finally:

Daddiness: That quality of protecting and being protected, of nurturing and being nurtured, that feeling that everything’s going to be all right as long as he’s around. That’s a powerful bond wherever it occurs — and has less to do with age than the personalities of the individuals involved.

“Resolution”

I hadn’t planned on telling my best friend Bianca Tyler that I’d been in a relationship with her brother Brandon; but the moment I learned he was back from Afghanistan, I knew the truth was going to have to come out. Brandon was only a year older than me and Bianca, but he was so much more mature than anyone our age. When we were in eleventh grade, he took my virginity on the night of—his senior and my junior—prom. We were together throughout my senior year but our relationship suffered when he enlisted in the military. I admit, it was hard keeping that big of a secret from my best friend but I swore allegiance to Brandon that I wouldn’t tell her.

“Micah, I need to talk to you about Brandon,” Bianca said to me as she stood in my doorway.

I immediately tensed up and asked, “What about him?”

“He told the family something last night that I cannot believe.” She stepped inside and told me, “He told us he’s bisexual.”

Slightly relieved, I closed the door and asked her, “Is that a bad thing?”

“Well…no but I wasn’t expecting it. I don’t know what made him tell us at this time but…I don’t know. I just don’t know how to feel about it.”

“Come on, let’s go up to my room and talk. You know how nosy my mama is.” I grabbed her hand and led her upstairs to my bedroom.

Bianca and I talked about everything and usually nothing was off-limits, but preparing to talk to her about Brandon being bisexual knowing that I’d been with him was like walking barefoot on sharp needles. I usually didn’t think about Brandon whenever I talked to her, but now all I could think about was the last time I was with him. We had sex that day and then ended the relationship amicably. I’d moved on and I was sure he’d moved on as well, but that did nothing to ease the awkwardness I felt while looking into Bianca’s eyes.

“I just can’t picture him with another guy,” she blurted out. “Like no offense to you; Micah, but I can’t see Brandon with a guy.”

“Why would I be offended by that?”

“You know…because you’re gay.”

“Bianca, I understand how you’re feeling. Just because I’m gay doesn’t mean I don’t understand your confusion. He’s your only brother and you’ve only seen him date women.”

“Exactly. You remember how he was in high school, right? He had damn near every girl fighting over him.”

“True. Well, how are your parents taking it?”

“They’re still more concerned with Brittany being engaged to an ex-con to really care about Brandon being bi. He told them and they were just like, ‘okay.’ I guess when you have six wild daughters and one tamed son, it doesn’t matter if that son happens to be bi.”

“Six wild daughters? Bianca, you’ve never been wild.”

“So, you don’t remember me sneaking out to meet up with boys in high school?”

“Yeah, but that’s not as bad as getting pregnant at sixteen like your sister Breanna did.”

“It took all of us to keep my mama from beating her ass. Damn, that was a crazy time.”

“I honestly don’t think Brandon being bisexual is that surprising.”

When I said that, she gave me a look and smirked before asking, “What makes you say that?”

“I’m just saying, he’s a good guy and he likes everybody. He’s a good person to be around.”

“Yeah, it’s like he’s from another family.” She giggled and then asked, “So, what are your plans for tonight?”

“Plans? Girl, I’m staying in and watching the countdown on TV.”

“Micah, you’re not coming to Chrissy’s party?”

“Nope. I just don’t feel like it.”

“Ugh, you so boring!” She laughed and playfully hit me. “I guess I’ll just party for the both of us tonight then.” She got a text message from someone and texted them back.

“Who is that?”

“Brandon. He said he’s bored at the recruitment office. I can’t believe they have him down there doing paperwork while the office is closed. It’s New Year’s Eve.”

“The recruitment office? Exactly how long is he going to be in town?”

“Micah, he’s back for good. He’s not doing anymore tours in Afghanistan. He’s about to get an apartment downtown.”

“Wow, I thought he was just visiting for the holidays.”

“Nope, he’s back home and even though he dropped that bombshell on the family last night, I’m glad he’s home.”

As much as I wanted to be honest with her, I couldn’t do it in that moment. How can you tell someone who recently learned her brother is bisexual that you used to be in a secret relationship with him? So, I talked with her for a while and after she left, I got dressed and headed down to the Army recruitment office. I was anxious to see him for the first time in over two years, but I knew once I saw him that I’d be okay. Brandon always had this calming effect on me and I loved being near him.

“Hey soldier,” I said with a smile as I approached his cubicle.

He turned around in his swivel chair and his face lit up when he saw it was me. He smiled big and asked, “How did you get in here?”

“I told the white lady up front that I was family.”

“Damn, look at you.” He stood up and wrapped his arms around me. “You look great, Puppy.”

I laughed when he called me that because that was his little nickname for me. His arm was still around me as I pulled back from the hug and looked into his eyes. I giggled as I told him, “You look great, too.”

“I missed you.”

“I missed you, too.”

“Yeah, sure you did. I know you probably gave some lucky undeserving dude a chance.”

“Hmm, if I didn’t know any better I’d think you were asking me if I’m single.”

“Are you?”

“Yes Brandon, I’m single.”

“I told you before I left that you didn’t have to wait for me.”

“Negro, I didn’t say anything about I waited.” I laughed a little before saying, “I dated and I had a few potential situations, but nothing really worked out. What about you?”

“I had a few hookups but nothing serious at all.” He grabbed my hand and admitted, “To be honest with you, I was hoping I’d come back here and you’d be single so we could restart where we left off.”

“Seriously?”

“Yes. I’m sure my sister told you I came out to the family last night.”

“I was just with her at my house and she told me.”

“Yeah, I finally told them I’m bi. I can’t believe how cool everyone was about it. Then again, I was never as much of a handful as any of my sisters.”

“That’s exactly what Bianca said.”

His telephone rang and he stepped over to it and answered it. After the call ended, he came back over to me and asked, “What are your plans for tonight?”

“I don’t have any. Why?”

“Bianca’s friend Chrissy is having a party and I was hoping I’d run into you there so we could talk, but you’re here now. Are you gonna be at the party?”

“I wasn’t going to go but if you’re gonna be there, I might as well show up.”

“Cool. I got a ton of paperwork to do so I’ll see you there, Puppy.”

I giggled again and asked, “Are you ever gonna stop calling me that?”

“Nope. You’re always gonna be my cute Puppy. I don’t care how old you get. See you tonight.”

“See ya, soldier.” I flashed him one more smile before turning and leaving. I looked back to see him watching me walk away and I got butterflies in my stomach. I couldn’t wait for that night.

“I thought you weren’t coming here tonight?” Bianca asked me as she approached me at Chrissy’s New Year’s Eve party.

“I changed my mind,” I told her. “So, is Brandon here yet?”

“Yeah, he’s…” She stopped and then gave me a look as she asked, “Why are you looking for Brandon?”

“No reason. I just wanted to say hey. It’s been a while since I last saw him.”

“Oh, okay. There’s a lot of people here, right?”

“Yeah. I didn’t think Chrissy would’ve invited this many people. Then again, her parents are in Paris. I wish my parents would take a trip out of the country.”

“Who are you telling?” She laughed and joked, “If I could have my house to myself, I’d throw a party and invite everyone from campus.”

“Speaking of campus, do you think Brandon will enroll at Calhoun now that he’s home for good?”

“I don’t know. I haven’t talked to him about it. Come on, let’s go get some champagne.”

I followed her into the kitchen and we poured ourselves some champagne. I’d just turned twenty-one in November so it was my first time drinking alcohol. Not a second after I drank from my glass, Brandon entered the kitchen with a bottle of Budweiser in his hand. He looked at me and said, “Hey, Micah.”

“Hey. Bianca told me you were here.” I gave him a hug and pretended as if I hadn’t seen him earlier that day.

“I’ll let you two get caught up,” Bianca said to us. “Micah, don’t forget Chrissy paid for a cool firework display in her backyard. I’ll be out there when you’re done talking to Brandon’s nerdy ass.”

“Nerdy?” he asked with a laugh. “I’ma get you for that later.” He watched as she left the kitchen. He then turned his attention on me and asked, “Are you ever gonna tell her about us?”

“It’ll be better if you told her. She is your sister.”

“But you’re her best friend.”

“She might bite my head off.”

“No, she won’t. I don’t think she’ll trip. How about we both tell her?”

“Well, first we need to make sure we’re both on the same page about the present. Are you sure you want to try this again?”

“Baby, I am one hundred percent sure. When you walked into the recruitment office earlier today, my heart stopped. Well, that and my dick got hard.” He laughed before continuing, “Micah, I love you. I’ve loved you for a while now and I should’ve told you this a long time ago. I think I fell in love with you the night I took your virginity but I could never find the right time to tell you.”

I tried to fight the tears but they were building in my eyes regardless. I stared back into his eyes as I told him, “I love you, too.”

He put his arms around me and licked his lips before pressing them to mine. I sat my glass of champagne down and he sat down his bottle of beer so we could feel on each other while we kissed. We were so caught up in the moment that we didn’t notice Bianca until she cleared her throat and asked, “What is going on in here?”

“Oh, sis,” Brandon said as he stepped behind me to hid his erection. “How long were you standing there?”

“Long enough to see you two locking lips. Micah, what’s going on?”

“I did not want you to find out this way,” I began, “but maybe it needs to happen this way. Bianca, Brandon and I were in a relationship for a little while before he enlisted. We put the relationship on pause and now we’re restarting it. I know I should’ve told you a long time ago, but…”

“Does he treat you right?”

“Yes.”

She looked at her brother and asked, “Does Micah make you happy?”

He put his arm around me from behind and replied, “He does. I love him.”

“Well, I’m cool with it. But absolutely no kissing in front of me for a while. It’s weird.”

“Are you really okay with this?” I asked her.

“You’re my best friend, Micah. If you were some random dude then of course I’d have some problems, but I can’t even get mad at you. You two actually look cute together.”

“Wow, I stressed out over this today for nothing,” I said with a laugh.

“It’s almost time for the countdown,” Brandon said. “Come on, let’s go outside.”

The three of us left the kitchen and headed out back where everyone else was. We all did the countdown and when midnight arrived, Brandon and I shared a kiss. That kiss was just as sweet as the first one I shared with him back when I was seventeen. I had no idea what was in store for us in the new year; but I knew we were entering it as a reunited couple, and I was pretty excited about that.

“DL Confession #3”

I couldn’t believe we lost our chance to advance in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time since I’d been at UCLA. It was my final year playing for the team and that made the loss even harder for me. Our coaches tried to make it seem like we had a decent season but their words of encouragement did little to make most of us feel better. For me, I needed an escape and the best escape was my secret guilty pleasure. His name was Allen and I was long overdue for some freaky fun with him.

“I’m at the gym, Chloe,” I said to my girlfriend over the phone. “I’ll just meet you at the party.”

“But baby,” she pleaded on the other end, “we always ride to parties together. Besides, it’s going to be thunderstorming all evening and you know I hate driving in thunderstorms.”

“Then use Lyft to get you there.”

“But Ted…”

“Chloe, you know I’ve been going through a lot lately. I really just need some time to myself right now. I’ll see you at the party later.”

“So, you’re mad at me?”

“What?” I quickly calmed myself before I got too angry and assured her, “Baby, I’m not mad at you. I love you.”

“I love you, too. Well, I guess I’ll use Lyft to get there.”

“Good. See you later, baby.” I ended the call and then headed into the locker room to grab my stuff.

I really did love Chloe but she sometimes added to my stress, and that day was just one of those days. I’d been with her since sophomore year and we were serious. While she was the only woman I was having sex with, she wasn’t the only person. The stress-free relationship I had with Allen actually began the summer after my freshman year. If it weren’t for him, I don’t know how I would’ve managed all the constant shit going on in my life. He was more than just my distraction from reality, he was the one person I could be me around without fear of judgment.

“Hookup”

I rarely used Grindr because it was full of fake profiles and paranoid DL men, but I was in a mood that night. I was swiping through profiles when a guy messaged me his phone number. I checked out his profile but the only pic he had up was a pixelated pic of what looked like a pair of shoes. I sent him a message back saying I wasn’t interested and when he asked why, I told him because he had no pics up. He then sent a message telling me to call him and I wouldn’t regret it. I was going to block him and move on but something told me to give it a try. So, I called him.

“Wassup,” he said to me after answering the call on the second ring.

“Are you gonna send me a pic?” I asked immediately.

He laughed and said, “Why send a pic when you can come see me in public?”

“Your profile said you’re on the low. How can we meet in public if you’re on the low?”

“Ain’t nobody really in here right now. The store will be closin’ soon.”

“Store? What store?”

“Target. I’m in the snack shop part of the store. If you wanna meet up then get yo fine ass down here. Your pics look sexy as fuck, bruh.”

Flattered, I laughed a little and asked, “You’re at the Target in Fairmount Plaza?”

“Yep. I’m sittin’ at a table with my dick on brick thinkin’ about what yo head game must be like. Them lips look like they can do some damage. I ain’t never been sucked up by a dude before.”

“You haven’t?”

“Nah, but I heard y’all know what to do. I need my dick slurped on and gagged on for real. I ain’t nutted in over a week.”

I ended the call and tried not to get excited or get my hopes up. I really needed some dick that night and I admit I was a little turned on by the fact that he’d never been with another guy before. True curious men were like unicorns and it was always amazing seeing their reactions to some of the things I’d do to them. Before leaving to go meet up with my Grindr hookup, I told myself that if it didn’t work out then I could still jackoff while one of my anal toys was up in my ass.

“A Righteous Burden”

The date July 22, 2009 is a date that I will never forget. It was a cloudy Wednesday afternoon and while I wasn’t necessarily looking forward to Pastor Ballard’s Bible study, I was excited about choir rehearsal because our choir director Mr. Hankinson had agreed to play a song that I composed myself. I’d been trying to get him to use one of my compositions since I began writing music. I wasn’t much of a gospel lyricist so Mr. Hankinson wrote words for the music, and they were amazing. I couldn’t wait to sing the song with the choir for the first time and I really couldn’t wait to sing it for the church that following Sunday. However, it wasn’t my music that made July 22, 2009 memorable. It turned out to be the day I experienced a miracle.

“You’re not gonna change my mind,” Kareem said to me while putting on his Jordans. “I’m done with school, Ant.”

“Why now?” I asked while looking at myself in the mirror to make sure my tie was on right. “Baby, why would you drop out of school right before our senior year?”

“Because it’s pointless. I’m not goin’ to college or doin’ anything important so I don’t see why I should waste my time.”

“So, being at school with me is a waste of your time?”

“That ain’t what I meant and you know it. Anthony, I’m just done with that shit. I’m done with it. I’m a grown ass man. Fuck…I mean, forget school. I got other stuff I need to be worried about.”

Kareem Taylor had been my boyfriend for a little over a year but we’d known each other since elementary school. He was my best friend up until sixth grade, which was when he began picking on me and hanging out with the bad boys at school. I later figured out he picked on me because he liked me and even though I liked him, too, neither of us built up the nerve to do anything about it until the end of our tenth-grade year. I wrote him a letter basically telling him that I wanted us to be boyfriends. He came to my house after school that day and gave me my first kiss. And just like that, we were together.

“I Care 4 U”

The rain was pouring down that Saturday night as if it were coming from an enormous showerhead directly above Baton Rouge. The date was February 14, 2015 and I was ready for Valentine’s Day to be over. Yet again, I didn’t have a boyfriend or even someone to fake it with for some V-Day dick; therefore, I was over it. Still recovering from a cold, I was feeling good enough to try out a new anal toy I’d purchased from Amazon. My dinner consisted of a fruit salad with a caramel drizzle and water, so douching was a breeze. It was a quarter to eleven and I was all set for some vibrating action when there was a knock at my bedroom door. I put on my robe and opened the door to see my roommate Brendon standing there.

“You better be glad I have extra.” I went over to my nightstand and grabbed one of my bottles of naturally scented edible lubricant. I handed it to him and suggested, “You shouldn’t be sleeping with some woman’s husband.”

“Bitch please, you’ve seen him on Facebook. That man is the epitome of fine.”

“He is but I’d feel guilty as fuck. I don’t see how you do it.”

“Taye, the man is more into fem bitches like me than he is into his wife. He likes to suck dick and fuck an asshole.” He noticed the way I was looking and shook his head before asking, “So, you’d never give a brotha in need some ass if he’s married or in a serious relationship?”

“No. It’s not my thing.”
