The concept of being two contrasting people or having contrasting characteristics has been on my mind lately. This concept has been what I have wanted for my life and I realize thinking about a concept and living through a concept are totally different things.Â
So, ever since I watched the Cosby show I’ve always wanted to be Claire Huxtable. First in the most superficial way, she’s pretty and she has a nice voice and nice hair. As I got older it got more complex. I wanted to be educated and smart and attractive. As I got older it became more of a reality, conceptually but not so much in real life. Until college (undergrad pt. 2) I did not feel like I could be smart and attractive at the same time. For me being smart was nerdy which was negative, so I accepted that as my fate. I didn’t think I would ever be looked at like I was attractive.
Once I took a long hard look in the mirror and assessed the damage, I came to the conclusion that whatever it is that I want to be I have the power to be that no matter what it is, no matter how complex it is, no matter how simple it is.Â
I realized that I can be an independent career woman, that still wants to be married and fulfill the domestic duties. I want to be someone that can posses strength and vulnerability simultaneously. I want to have a thriving career and a joyous family. I want to be career oriented with wok life balance. I want to be all of these things and its not impossible.
One person that has really brought this concept of duality to life for me has to be Cardi B. To be all of the things she is or once was is so powerful to me and I enjoy her being herself. She has shown that she can be a stripper, a social media icon, a rapper, a mother, a wife, a bad bitch, an educated citizen that is informed about laws and taxes, a scorned lover, a postpartum depression suffer. After all of that she is a person who is just being a human and there is really no one way to do that.
Duality is looking up to Cardi B and Claire Huxtable lol.
