Compassion and generosity

A compassionate person might not be sure whether he is being compassionate to you or whether you are being compassionate to him, because compassion creates a total environment of generosity. Generosity is implied; it just happens, rather than you making it happen. It’s just there, without direction, without me, without “for them.” It’s full of joy, a spontaneously existing grin of joy, constant joy.

Taṇhā (from Pāli; Sanskrit: तृष्णा, romanized: tṛ́ṣṇā Sanskrit pronunciation: [tr̩ʂɳaː]) is an important concept in Buddhism, referring to "thirst, desire, longing, greed", either physical or mental. It is typically translated as craving, and is of three types: kāma-taṇhā (craving for sensual pleasures), bhava-taṇhā (craving for existence), and vibhava-taṇhā (craving for non-existence).

"Samsara"

The original meaning of “samsara” signifies “wandering”, referring to the cycle of infinite rebirths experienced by sentient beings. Hence, it is also translated as ‘reincarnation’. Ancient Indians universally believed in reincarnation. More than believing, they assumed it was the natural order. Consequently, the Buddha himself regarded it as self-evident, expounding his teachings upon this premise. The purpose of the Buddha's teachings is liberation from this cycle of rebirth—that is, attaining liberation.

The ancient Indians conceived of six realms of rebirth, known as the Six Paths. The following are listed in order of severity of suffering:

The world of Hell (naraka) – The realm of greatest suffering. ‘Hell’ signifies an ‘underground prison’.

The world of hungry ghosts (preta)– A realm tormented by the suffering of starvation. Those who committed the sin of greed are reborn here. 

The world of animals (tiryagyoni) 

The world of warlike demigods (asura) – The world of Asura, demonic beings.

The world of human beings (manushya)

The worldof gods or celestial beings (deva)– A world of great pleasure, yet suffering from ageing and death exists here too.

To leave this cycle behind, liberation, is our goal, and it is possible.
