"Hm?" Rogers finally looked back at her. "No ma’am. We aren’t." He smiled nervously. That wasn’t a serious question. Was it? Guess he was still the shrimp despite traveling with showgirls.
He frowned, rubbing his chin. ”Wouldn’t call it gallant. Some of them would have done the same thing if one of them were free and the rest of us weren’t.” Meaning the Commandoes. Clearing out his thoughts, Steve shook his head, slightly blushing at his Christian name being called. Still not used to that. ”Yes, Peggy?” He focused again, “Might be a good idea to see the command center. It’s getting cold.” If she was questioned, he’d try to get it cleared. They weren’t doing anything wrong. Friends.
Picking the least burned place, Steve set towards there. ”Good thing I left my tights at camp,” he muttered. ”I’m just Captain Rogers, US Army. No press please. My trained monkey smile is rusty.”
She hadn't meant any harm by it, and tried to reassure him with a smile. "Well," she said brightly, "lucky us." If Peggy saw Steve as "the shrimp" it was only in the fondest of ways. She was still quite fond of the skinny young man she'd ridden in the back of that cab with.
Not that that Steve wasn't still that man; he was and she knew that. But she suspected that sometimes he forgot. "Well," she said, "I think your modesty has a lot to do with why people think it's so heroic." She knew that he was often quick to shirk off praise. Maybe from her, he'd accept it a little more easily. "At any rate, it was good of you to do it." She flashed a small and mischievous smile at him. "And good of me to help. Howard, too."
Peggy nodded, still smiling. "A sound plan, Captain." The poor thing, having to dodge fame at every turn. She did count her blessings from time to time that she wasn't eligible for the super serum- not that they'd ever have chosen a woman. Her temper wasn't quite as gentle as Steve's. "I'll do my best to shoo away any cameras that get pointed at you, all right?" She gave his arm a small squeeze, and followed his direction to the place that was in the best shape.
