Minecraft entities are coded to love high spaces. It's why animals are commonly found on mountains and shit. If you have one side of a floating platform where it's only 1 block thick and the other is 5 blocks thick, the vast majority of animals spawned will all go onto the 5 side. This can be used for mob farms and shit without needing water.
