I think it's funny how the fandom is split between romantisizing Jinmao's every interaction and those who find them toxic and problematic. e.g. The thing about the age gap (practically non-existent btw they are ONE YEAR APART). If the show wants to show you problematic, they WILL shove it in your face. If the show is gonna show you pedophilia, they WILL and DID, along with discussing the countless horrific repercussions that come with it (see: The Former Emperor episode). Why bother looking for a problem that doesn't exists when it's right there in the other room?

Secondly, I don't really agree when people say Jinmao's relationship is completely healthy. It's a whole journey to reach the point where it is TRULY healthy. They have miscommunications. They make each other angry. They hurt each other. And if you think that scene in the cave is problematic then oh boy you got a thing coming in future arcs. They're young adults who make mistakes and trying to deal with inner conflict and pressure from those around them and each other. Sexual assault? Yes I can see why it looks like that. But I don't think the creators intended it so. Like I said, if it's problematic I'm sure the show will shove it in our faces. He acknowledged his actions, apologized afterwards and did his best to not make her scared and uncomfortable. Jinshi's not a total green flag and Maomao isn't a defenseless child.

stories aren't meant to be spoon fed to us, and characters certainly don't owe you perfection

jinshi and maomao are great for each other because they cause each other to grow while trying to understand each other

the main commentary about their relationship should be about the power hierarchy in place, (which the show touches on plenty btw) and how they navigate their relationship through it

THAT'S why jinshi is so stressed about telling maomao his position, AND why maomao is so in denial. jinshi wants their relationship to overcome the difference in power while maomao knows that knowledge comes with danger

I feel like typically the "dead wife" montage does nothing for me, even when executed very well, because it's often just like "here's this woman you'll never get to meet, she only matters because a man loves her so much and now he's sad."

But the montage wasn't just Mark's recollections. It was her perspective too. He's her dead husband. He's her Eurydice as much as he's his own Orpheus.

This isn't humanizing Gemma for Mark's sake. This is humanizing Gemma for Gemma's sake and it's there not for us to root for Mark, it's there for us to realize we're rooting for Gemma. Every moment Mark reaches out for her, she's reaching back.

The dead wife montage normally deprives a woman her agency, making her a tool for a man's arc, but this episode fully restored Gemma's agency. She's fighting back, she's yearning too. She hurts, she aches, she angers. She fights, she bleeds, she gets frustrated too. And has been before she was ever Ms Casey,

I've never seen a show restore a character's humanity as fully as this single episode did for Gemma. She went from an abstract concept--a wife, a severed employee, a ghost--to a tangible person.

And this was realized so literally as well. We literally see her bleed, we literally watch her eat, her hands cramp up, her teeth ache. It's like watching a hologram become flesh muscle by muscle, bone by bone.

I'm in awe of what they were able to do for her in just 50 minutes. In many ways, I feel I know Gemma better than I know half the cast.

Regarding your post about Anora, I did appreciate how they dealt with it. It's clear what Ani is afraid of during the home invasion scene. We know subconsciously it's not going to happen because it's not that kind of film, but the way it plays out shows that Baker takes those fears seriously, he doesn't dismiss the very real danger she's in as a sex worker.

also side note: i went in blind so i didn't know how the movie would go and what tone it would take. I was fully expecting it to turn very dark somewhere

the fight scene was the turning point of the film: ivan's responsibility finally catching up (introducing the other half of the main cast)

it is very plausible for Anora to become a gritting dark comedy film at that point

the whole reason the fight scene turned out so funny is that Baker didn't want it to be dark, which is why Ani kept on disarming the 2 very large men and beating them up

the thing that i love most about Anora is that Ani was never raped

that rape conversation with Ani and Igor was so very important

this calls out all the people who says rape culture is inevitable, or men just can't help themselves, or rape is deserved because of the victim's job or clothing

throughout the film, Ani is continuously overpowered and her status as a sex worker is belittled, but she doesn't get raped

why? because Igor is not a rapist

in a film about sex and power, I really expected Ani to get raped

but her power and autonomy of her own sex is never taken away

and instead reinforced in the final scene when she USES it to take back her sense of control
