mtg book report, entry 39: insufficient evidence by michael a. stackpole

stackpole, michael a. “insufficient evidence.” magic the gathering: distant planes: an anthology, edited by kathy ice, harpercollins, 1996, pp. 1-22

this is actually a direct sequel to stackpole's offering from the previous anthology, tapestries! a cursory investigation seems to suggest this will be the only story to serve as a direct sequel to a story from tapestries, but i guess i'll see as i keep reading! (or i'll remember to come back and edit this paragraph later to reflect my knowledge of whether that's the case or not, but what are the odds of that?)

i can't say i was overly attached to the amnesia-addled protagonist, whose deal i guess we're never going to find out about since this is his last story appearance. but it's still cool to see a bit of continuity between the two anthologies.

i was a bit sad that his vaguely domme-coded cat warrior girlfriend was much less heavily involved this time around. (though, admittedly, she was domme-coded in a way that felt designed to be nonthreatening to straight boys. if you've encountered many Strong Female Characters from the 90s, you probably get what i mean.) but overall, i actually enjoyed this story drastically more.

both stories relied on putting the protagonist in situations where he had to use a combination of magic and outwitting his enemies to escape dire situations. this one, though, sees him falsely accused of murder and needing to prove his innocence, which for me is just a more fun genre space to explore than treasure hunting. (sorry, murders at karlov manor haters.) like its predecessor, though, i can't say it was one of my favorite stories, and while it was a pleasant diversion i'm not exactly bitterly disappointed i never found out what loot's deal was. (especially since now we have a much more interesting character who's also named loot.)

I really like the thought of Gyatso teaching Aang everything about showing affection and love despite the fact that Air Nomads have to learn about detachment to reach enlightment. He was the best teacher for our lil avatar.

more overlap, and following the precedent of the last cluster like this i have the comic that's focused on jared carthalion after the two that tell a set's story.

i was about ready to declare this pretty boring action slop and wonder why we decided shadow mage needed a sequel, BUT THEN NIGHTMARE SHOWED UP??? so we really can't call this a total loss. also, her & altair are just kinda explicitly kinky at this point, and i'm here for it.

also, there were some pretty dang cool visuals whenever an exposition dump happened. and the story sort of hinged on jared learning about all five colors of magic, and that white wasn't "good" and black wasn't "evil," so that was nice.
