once again this and the following entry overlap quite a bit, and once again i have chosen to use the order of the associated sets' releases as the tiebreaker.

aside from it being a bit jarring to see mtg characters invoking a real-life earth religion's deity, this two-issue miniseries is… surprisingly fairly normal as far as this era of mtg fiction goes? it's basically just the origin story of one of the most powerful oldwalkers, and there aren't any especially obvious references to the 1001 nights that i picked up on.

the story is fairly straightforward, and while two issues isn't a lot of story real estate, i actually think that's a bit of an advantage here? because rabiah is just not a plane we especially want to spend much time on. having the story be basically laser focused on being the origin story of taysir, a character who's probably at least as associated with dominaria as he is with his home plane, was a great way to technically give us a story for the arabian nights set that isn't just an inivitation to check out 1001 nights at our local library.

i would be a lot harsher on wizards for putting themselves in this position in the first place were it not for the fact that they simply had no idea what magic the gathering even was when they developed arabian nights as their first expansion. it was just so dang early in the game's history. no one knew what this was. it's something of a minor miracle that a few years later we got story content that did an admirable job of pretending any of this was normal and coherent with the rest of the game's settings.

This is true of the manga, but I love how the anime accentuates the absolute physical trust the apprentices have with Qifrey. Specifically with Agott, the way she is so ready when Qifrey says “hang on tight, I need my hands free” to cling to him a mile into the sky, and then in the latest episode, how, as soon as she impacts Qifrey while flying to him, she makes no move to save herself, she just curls into him and trusts that he will keep them from falling.

And I think it works as a signal to the audience, to subtly go “hey, I know we don’t trust Qifrey right now, he’s being shady, but we can always trust him to protect the physical wellbeing of his kids. Remember that.” Idk man maybe I’m getting too attached to a teeny detail but aaaaaaghhhh that’s her dad.

reading this made me feel incredibly nostalgic. this was the only mtg comic i owned as a kid, and also the only one i had read until fairly recently.

i'm willing to admit that nostalgia may have played a big part here. and on top of nostalgia for the comic itself, nightmare was my favorite magic card when i was a dumbass kid (/a). but rereading this now, i liked it SO much better than i've liked any other comic i've read so far for this project. it felt much more distinct and focused while also managing to cram like a dozen spells from mtg's early core sets into its pages. it's just the most nostalgic anything i've read for this project so far has made me for the early days of magic.

also, like... it's bizarrely kinda highkey kinky??? like... nightmare is SO dommy, and a character agrees to be her slave for 10 years and even though he later has the power to just shrug off that agreement, he... doesn't??? and it's highly implied he isn't really in a hurry to escape after those 10 years??? this is a lot of reading between the lines, but i seriously think the dude might be into it. kinky!
