"Eddie stole a glance down at Buck’s face, already tilted up to meet his gaze, and allowed himself the pleasure of studying his face as he slept. The early morning sun crept its way into the room, illuminating Buck’s features in its soft, yellow light, dressing each valley and contour of his face with its matching shadow. Eddie could have sworn he felt his heart sigh at the sight of him, and then start to slow and beat more carefully as he lay there, staring at the light catching in Buck’s lashes, the way it spanned across his nose and highlighted the plush curve of his lips, as if he was the subject of a carefully created portrait, or perhaps a person basking happily in the pointed sunshine of a painting by Fragonard. For a fleeting moment, Eddie allowed himself the joy of simply watching, a soft smile slowly spreading across his lips as his eyes traced the silhouette of Buck’s sleeping form."
