[ This biography contains a TRIGGER WARNING for mentions of naziism ]
Not many in Rapture know what Dieter did before he entered the city. For most, especially women, he is the gentleman of the Tea Garden. Charming and polite, a romantic poet who makes Arcadia a wonderful, magical place to be. Yet there is a darker side to the man that lingers far beneath the surface, a portion of his life he’d rather leave in the past. He was but a young man when the war started, and sided not with the victims, but with the executioners themselves. It did not necessarily have to do with agreement in their ideals, but in the means of survival. Part of the Austrian military force, he witnessed the war through the eyes of who the world would deem the enemy. There were no moral questions at first, he did as he was told, and slowly entered the psychology of what it meant to be Nazi. Dieter’s hands are red by the blood of those he heartlessly murdered in his quest to survive the war: men, women, children, anyone of Jewish faith, soldiers of the other side, communists, Russians. It did not matter who they were, simply that he had orders to follow. At the end of the war, he fled, hid from justice while other members from his family were either shot or hanged for their actions. He found refuge in Italy, were he put his skills as an engineer in creating intelligent landscapes for the country’s praised historical gardens.
It is by admiring his work that the governess, Julie Langford, took him with her on a marvelous adventure. A challenge: build the surface at the bottom of the ocean, a breathing lung for Rapture. The opportunity not missed, a new man entered the city, leaving his past behind for good. However, Dieter has found that some of the imagery of his past is still there to haunt him. He’s not been able to let it go in full, never did he pay for what he’d done in the way that his fellow comrades had. No readjustment made, sparks of the Nazi psychology still remain like a tick, though he’s managed to keep it to himself. The nightmares, the itches, those are easily enough escaped in the bosoms of the women he seeks to please.
BUT IN THE END, OUR CHOICES MAKE US
Albert Milonakis - In saying goodbye to his past, he did keep one reminder - a coin. Just past his threshold for tolerance, as the whiskey ran through him, he was indeed certain to tip Albert, serving as his bartender for the night, only leaving the wrong sort of coin behind. It was returned to him, but not without speculation of a favor owed eventually.
Angelina Romanova - The girl who twists his mind, a charming obsession. Ever since Dieter saw Angelina, he has been trying to ask her out on a date to the Tea Garden. He hasn’t had such a teenage like nervousness since the days of adolescence. Will Rapture show him what they refer too as Cupid’s dance? If not, getting her out of his system by simpler means would not be a bad thing either. There’s a reason he hasn’t let anyone in, they always want to know the details and his aren’t of the sort that would be so easily accepted.
Julie Langford - It’s the governess who he gladly bows he head to. Her wishes are his commands. It’s is aim to please her, to keep the walks of Arcadia fresh and new, yet he feels as if his work is starting to bore. After all, they have created the impossible, what more can be done beside maintenance?
Niña Carnegie - Some nights pend easier than others, Niña would be a prime example of those easy nights. Her visits are quite regular, Dieter likes to think of her as a friend of sorts, someone he can be honest with, often forgetting that she’s there for the pay.
