1. How does your character think of their father? What do they hate and love about him? What influence - literal or imagined - did the father have?
he prefers not to talk about his father. it wasn’t that the guy was necessarily a bad person, just… not understanding.
3. Brothers, sisters? Who do they like? Why? What do they despise about their siblings?
he was the baby brother to two siblings, both of whom died when he was young. one of disease when calvin was four, one of fatal injuries in a car accident when calvin was seven. he doesn’t mention them often.
5. Were they overprotected as a child? Sheltered?
yes. but it wasn’t that they wanted to keep him safe. it was more that they felt he needed rules and regulations, regardless of if they were necessarily needed.
7. What was the economic status of their family?
pure middle class. they weren’t poor, but they didn’t get the newest and greatest either. calvin’s father never owned a brand new car.
9. What about political beliefs?
calvin tries his very best to stay out of politics. he never voted.
11. How do they see themselves: as smart, as intelligent, uneducated?
he considers himself smart enough. maybe average is a better word.
13. Did they like school? Teachers? Schoolmates?
he got on with teachers better, but it’s still not something he’d care to go through again.
15. Did they graduate? High-School? College? Do they have a PHD? A GED?
he graduated high school, but never actually attended the college courses he signed up for.
17. Did they travel? Where? Why? When?
all over. when you’re a ghost, you don’t have to worry about money or obligation.
19. What were your character’s deepest disillusions in life? What are they now?
he thought he would just find a place to belong, eventually. and in all likeliness, he probably would have. he just didn’t wait long enough.
21. What are your character’s manners like? What is their type of hero? Whom do they hate?
he’s a very polite person. just blunt.
23. What do they want from a partner? What do they think and feel of sex?
he wants approval, attention, and–honestly–a fair amount of sex.
25. What are their hobbies and interests?
when he was alive, he absolutely loved drawing. he never fancied himself great at it, but it was fun. since then, he’s lost his touch.
27. How do they relate to their appearance? How do they wear their clothing? Style? Quality?
he looks straight out of i love lucy a good majority of the time. minus the vague misogyny of its time, it’s about accurate.
29. What is your character’s weaknesses? Hubris? Pride? Controlling?
he’s very open with what he has to say, regardless of if it’s polite or appropriate for the situation. it’s gotten him in trouble many times.
31. Does your character have children? How do they feel about their parental role? About the children? How do the children relate?
he always wanted kids, but accepted very early on that it would probably never happen. when he was younger, he identified as gay and knew that he’d never be able to adopt. now, well. he can’t legally do anything along those lines.
33. Do they drink? Take drugs? What about their health?
he’s dead. he doesn’t have the capability to drink or smoke, and his health is rather… well…
35. Do they always rationalize errors? How do they accept disasters and failures?
he simply accepts them. at this point, he’s old enough to know that he just can’t control everything, and that’s life. it works out fairly well for him.
37. How is your character’s imagination? Daydreaming a lot? Worried most of the time? Living in memories?
39. What do they like to ridicule? What do they find stupid?
if you get him drunk, he’ll go ON AND ON about conservative republicans.
41. Is your character aware of who they are? Strengths? Weaknesses? Idiosyncrasies? Capable of self-irony?
he understands his past quite well, but not necessarily his present.
43. Does your character have any secrets? If so, are they holding them back?
so, so many. mostly the ghosty thing, from a lot of people.
45. Is your character pragmatic? Think first? Responsible? All action? A visionary? Passionate? Quixotic?
none of these things. except passionate.
47. Do they want to project an image of a younger, older, more important person? Does they want to be visible or invisible?
absolutely not older. everything else depends on the day.
49. What about voice? Pitch? Strength? Tempo and rhythm of speech? Pronunciation? Accent?
picture your sweet old, southern grandma. his accent has faded considerably, but if you listen close you can still hear the twang.
