Listening to the Waves (ChÅtÅ), stoneware with sand glaze (2004) Sakiyama Takayuki (Japanese, born 1958) created this stoneware vessel to mimic the rugged coastline near his home. Deep carved lines and a sandy glaze give the surface the appearance of moving water and rippling waves. The interior and exterior flow together in a seamless spiral that defies the traditional shape of a ceramic pot, capturing the energy of the natural world. Loc.
