Like imagine if you didn’t know anything about them when you met them for the first time and they showed you all their amazingly advanced astronomy, irrigation systems, and stuff. Then the next thing they show you is a sacrifice to the gods which involves killing someone while they are fully conscious and healthy. You wouldn’t think that’s fucked up? You’d look past that because they know how the stars work? Hm.

Are you guys so fucking commited to the “all white people bad” narrative that you are actually relativizing fucking human sacrifice? and adding the “we can’t judge people from the past by our moral standards” argument? you guys realize that by that logic we can’t judge anything that the Inquisition or the protestant courts/mobs did on heterodox thinking people did (torture; executions, expropiations, etc), right?. Of course we can’t just happily make general critic on people from the past by our current moral standards, but we can’t also go with the “oh no they were oppressed, therefore they can get away with murder” bullshit logic. People in the past, from many cultures including aztecs and europeans, did many amazing things but they also did horryfying stuff (seriously guys open a fucking history book: people around the world used to be brutal asf), and we should always remember both sides of the coin for every culture in existance (or ever existed), instead of that “good guys va bad guys” ten year old kid’s mentality narrative. Satysfying answers to historical moral dilemmas (for any narrative you are following of any end of the political spectrum) are fables not real history.

Ya know what? I was going to write a fucking wall text about how not recognizing the capabilities of a culture or people to do “bad” is equal to present them as child-like/minded, the whole colonial thought pattern of the “noble savage”, anglo narratives of colonialism against latino/hispanic cultures, and all that shit… but in the end I said “fuck it”. Let’s keep it simple: recognizing the awfulness of aztec human sacrifice is in no way detrimental of recognizing the horrible abuses commited by european colonial powers on the native americans, and it never should be considered like that in an academic or civil discussion.

Finally, I just want to say I’m in no humour of an endless internet discussion right now, my country (peruvian here, so huge Incas fan basically btw) is in flames…so I just have more important things to be angry (besides another personal problems and so). Saludos.
