Who is Cernunnos without Wiccan influence?

Cernunnos has been adopted in the neopagan community as a god of “fertility” and “masculinity”. This is not true to his Gaulish Celtic origins. There’s no surviving mythology of him, so all we know today is from ancient artifacts depicting his iconography and context within the Celtic pantheon. Lets look at what archeologists have gathered from these objects.

Send It Back/Poison Arrow Curse

I couldn’t decide on the name so I chose both OTL

A simple curse to send back all the anger, hurt, and overall negative feelings someone has caused you, with the intention of freeing yourself from those feelings at the same time. Thus, sending it back!

What you’ll need:

-Your imagination

How it’s done:

-Cast your circle in your preferred method

-Ground yourself

-Take the stance of an archer drawing their bow. Aim in the general direction of your target. Visualize all the negative feelings this person has caused you. Bundle them up and poison the tip of your arrow with those feelings. Imagine the burning anger they’ve caused you lighting the poison like oil. Pour every ounce of your hurt into the tip of this arrow.

-When you feel you’ve poured all you can, release your arrow. Imagine it flying across the distance, as far as you need it to, and finally piercing the heart of your intended target. Let the negativity and pain they’ve caused you flow through their veins like poison. Send it back. It’s no longer your burden to bear.

-When you’ve finished, go ahead and assume your normal post-curse self care ritual! Cleanse yourself, smoke a joint, take a bath, listen to music, whatever! Just take the time to feel good about yourself knowing that you’re no longer wounded by what they’ve done to you.

Jinx, Hex, or Curse?

Despite the fact that there’s posts like these around, people still tend to get jinxes and hexes and curses confused. Which, of course, is reasonable, especially in terms of hexes vs curses. But, actually, they’re all different.

The commonality between jinxes, hexes, and curses is that they’re always used to create some negative affect on their target. 

A jinx is a spell that is used to cause some sort of small, mostly harmless negative impact on its target. An example of a jinx could be jinxing someone’s plans for the day after they ruined yours the day before. It’s basically the Petty Spell…not saying pettiness is bad though. (-; A hex is a spell that is used to cause a temporary negative effect on its target with the intent of causing some sort of harm. It’s basically Curse Lite. An example of a hex could be casting a spell to cause someone to, say, lose their relationship with their significant other, or something of the sort. It’s harmful, but the effects of it don’t necessarily last for long lengths of time.

A curse is a complex spell used to cause specific harmful effects to its target. These are typically high in duration in terms of how long their effect their target, and tend to aim at one/a few things to basically make the person’s life worse overall. A curse of constant bad luck could be an example, although cliche. Curses can sometimes used to teach someone a lesson. We’ve all heard of (most likely fictional or folk legends) stories where people do something they weren’t supposed to and suffer the consequences unless they fix what they did.

I hope that cleared things up, and please please please let me know if I got any of this wrong or explained something incorrectly/in a way that is unclear!

Red - Presents life force, vitality, power & determination, and attracts good luck. 

Pink is the color of Love, reconciliation, friendship, happiness, and harmony. 

Orange symbolizes joy, optimism, and the will to succeed. 

Brown is a protective shield  and denotes natural wisdom and an affinity with nature 

Yellow Stimulates the mind and represents achievement and learning

"Sand Through Your Fingers” Curse

So one of my oldest and closest friends had her children taken away by her ex-husband’s mother, and placed into her care because she was upset that my said friend divorced her controlling and bordering abusive son. I do not appreciate people hurting the people I love, so I put this curse together to not only return said kids to their rightful and loving mom, but to make sure she can never do this to anyone else.

This curse will cause the cursee to loose something of the caster’s choice, and for it to stay out of their grasp– like trying to wrap one’s fist around sand. This curse is semi-permanent– it will reverse on its own if the person involved commits to being a better person and stops this kind of destructive behavior. I used this curse to make sure this woman can never, ever have a child stay in her care again. This curse is very potent. Please only use it if the person you are cursing has done something extreme, like the example above.

You will need;

-Sand, or anything with the consistency of sand (it can be artificial sand, beach sand, pond sand, coloured sand–it doesn’t matter, only the dryness and  consistency does) -A taglock for the cursee (a paper with their first and last name works–make sure it’s flammable) -A small item related to what you want them to loose (I used a Yu-Gi-Oh! card, to represent children, as I associate it with my childhood, but use what is relevant to you) -A dish big enough to fit your small item -A red candle, or a candle of a colour relevant to your goal (I use red because red can symbolize anger) -A stick, or something to mix your sand with (I used a pen) -Cayenne Pepper, or your favourite cursing herb. Make sure it is ground-up. +A sigil on paper to bring further misery (optional) Steps;

Get angry. Think about what the cursee did to warrant such a curse. Get all that negativity and anger up. Light your candle and place it in front of you.

Put your dish between you and the candle and put your item in it. Think about what that item is and what it is you want them to loose–and why. Think about that importance as you pour your sand over it, until you can’t see it.

Light your taglock and sigil if you have one on fire with the candle (Be careful!)  and think about the cursee. Focus on them, and all your anger and hate towards them. Let the ashes fall into the sand. 

Use your mixing tool and mix the ash into the sand. When it is cool enough, use your dominant hand and start mixing it that way.

Sprinkle your cayenne pepper into it as you mix. Pinch and grab at the sand as you do, and feel it slide out of your fingers. Touch, but do not grab the item you used to represent what you want them to loose. Speak out loud what it is you want. In my case, I said “You will not hurt my friend or her children ever again. You will never take away anyone’s children again, and no child will ever stay in your care ever again. Like this sand in my fingers, they will fall from your grasp” Repeat as much as necessary, until your emotions feel like they’ve dissipated.

Take your dish outside, remove your item, and throw the sand out into the dirt to return it to the earth. Say out loud, or think with firm intent, “You can have this back after you have learned your lesson.” (I prefer my curses to have a failsafe. Change as you see fit) Optional; stomp on the sand to further hammer your intent.

Cleanse your space, your dish, and everything else you used except the sand outside. Leave it there, it will do its job.

To Ruin Someones Life

You shall need.

Light the Incense and conjure up all the rage for you have for this person. Light the black candle continuing letting the rage build. Look at the persons picture and say 

“ (Persons name) I curse you, i summon, call and conjure all the dark to one, Fill you mind with rage. To ruin your life, To tear your life apart from vein to vein I command this” 

Feel again the rage you have for this person build up inside you. Allow it to fester and boil inside you. Place the picture inside the bowl, Pour the graveyard dirt over the picture as you visualize your hatred for this person.

Place the candle on top of it at the top of your lungs scream

“Destroy” 

Put the candle out, Each night after light the candle, and feel the rage you have for this person and scream “Destroy” repeat this each night until the candle burns out.

How To Tell If You’ve Been Cursed

The Egg Test

Simply take an egg (obviously from your own chickens is best but uh, Im going to assume most of you dont have one so store is fine), and carefully pass the egg through the flame of a white or black candle to “draw out the bad” and set intent. Then crack into a white bowl.

If you find blood: You’re cursed! Blood is never ever a good thing to find in your eggs, but especially during The Egg Test.

If you find big white clots: The bigger the clot the bigger the problem. It usually means some kind of blockage or obstruction in your life. Sometimes from some form of bad energy. Note: white clots in eggs is very very normal. Only take notice if they are unusually large

If you find egg shell: (Now if you’re really bad at cracking eggs maybe ignore this one) but this is a sign of your generic brand Bad Luck.

If you find a broken yolk: Take notice of your internal and subconcious self. The root of your problems comes from a disturbance within.

If you find something unusual: Listed above or otherwise, cleansing methods (such as a salt bath) will usually clean up most problems. Do your own research for cleansing methods of choice. I would advise not to eat the egg, but rather to pass the egg one final time (in the bowl) over the white flame before disposing off it outside. If you do cook it (because hey, I get it) use protective herbs like basil or rosemary and don’t forget to salt!

If you find nothing unusual: chop onions, mushrooms, and spinach up while heating an oiled pan on medium low. Add the egg to the pan, when a yellow film forms around the side and the egg can be separated easily, fill the center with toppings and flip half over to form an omelet. Cook through, flipping as needed. Season with salt, pepper, fresh herbs, and tomato (salsa if you’re frisky). That’s my favorite way to cook an egg!

Cernnunos (Kernunnos)

Note: This is my own experience with Cernunnos, and everyone’s might be different from mine! that is OK. He is a little bit different for everyone who works with him. If my experience is different from yours, please dont think this is me stating you are wrong. it is only from my experience that i can state my version of him. *Art By Ksenia Svincova*

Cernunnos, who also goes by Kernunnos, is a deity that originated from Gaul. Unfortunately there is not that much information when it comes to Cernunnos, due to the Gauls being killed off by the Romans. There is also little known about the other areas he was worshiped, but from what he has explicitly told me, he is known in other parts of Celtic worship. Cernunnos is incredibly old. Quite possibly one of the oldest dated deities I’ve researched. And he has also changed some over time, according to him.

Things he rules over/works with: Forests, trees (specifically oak), wild animals such as stags/elk, goats, deer, bulls, horses, ram horned snakes (snakes in general), boars, owls, hawks, ravens. He also is known for working with finances, underworld, death, transitioning into the afterlife, hunting and helping with the growth of plants, helping those who need grounding/healing, and balance of nature. (something must be taken in order for an exchange to happen. especially when it comes to healing. balance of nature)

Colors: Yellow, gold, greens (mostly forest shades), silver, and black

Aspects:  There is a parallel that he is also Herne the Hunter and the Green Man, but these are separate entities and protectors of the forest. He is also linked to Pan, a different aspect of him (I will most likely make a separate post for Pan because theres a lot to go into). He has shown me this aspect but I primarily work with the Cernunnos aspect. Due to the overtaking of Christianity in history, Cernunnos was cast out as ‘evil’ due to the depictions of him with horns/antlers and to him being a god of death/underworld. There are many other gods that Christians have claimed are Satan. None of these are Satan. (note: Satan/Lucifer is also not evil, Christians made him this way and that’s a topic for another day)

How He Presents Himself: Cernunnos has a few different forms that are presented to me personally, but it is a bit different for everyone. His main form is a very very tall faun, about 7-8 ft tall, with large stag antlers (with vines that wrap as well), long brown hair with braids, vines and moss wrapped around his arm, a snake twirled around his arm, loincloth and gold belt with a circular buckle that looks like a coin, and eyes that can change color.Sometimes he carries a gold torc, sometimes not. In other versions he is seen as a large white stag with antlers that i can best describe as like a chandelier. This presentation is what he shows during dreams/meditations for me. His Pan aspect is a large humanoid upright bull with a bull ring, loincloth, gold bracelets and extremely tall. He is also known for showing himself in a full human form, and one with long black robes and an elk skull as a face.

My experience working with him: Cernunnos has been with me throughout every life I’ve had. He is what I like to call my soul father. I am still learning more about him as I go! Cernunnos is very friendly but he can be very very stern. Working with him entails that you are ready to start doing self care, and growing to reach your highest self. He can be quite humorous when he likes you and quite chaotic when upset. Self care such as eating healthy (but not denying yourself a treat every now and again), staying grounded, connecting with animals, connecting with the earth, and respecting the life around us. He is incredibly stern when it comes to respect towards life. He understands that as humans, we eat meat, and use earthly resources to survive. Instead he asks that you honor the food that you are ingesting, and always give back to the earth to which it provides. As a god of the hunt, he finds the hunt rather fun, but only when the animal that is hunted is treated with respect during and after it is killed. Doing so would be that you use the animal in an honoring way, such as for food. He is appalled by trophy hunting and wishes people did not do this. When it comes to the earth, he asks that you pay respect when picking/clipping plants.  Ask before hand if it is okay followed by giving thanks to the earth for providing to you. He does NOT like when plants and trees are cut before their time. He is also known for helping with finances, energy healing (specifically animals) and a wide range of other doings. He loves to dance and is known to love folk music, Celtic music and music sung in Irish, French, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, etc. I have also noticed he tends to have a soft spot for those of us who have been emotionally/physically hurt, and those of us who have chronic issues and are in need of healing. (i may add onto this post if i realize i have forgotten anything)

Offerings: Venison (ethically sourced), cooked meats (ethically sourced), roses, sunflowers, lavender, wildflowers, sandalwood scent, juniper berries and bark, oak wood carvings, wood carvings, green or gold candles, pine scents, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, nutmeg, pelts (ethically sourced), feathers, bones (animal skulls, ethically sourced), forest moss, antlers, horns, pine cones, daggers, gold coins (older the better), poetry, art, Celtic music and most importantly: respecting the earth and the animals that are with us.

How to talk to him: Cernunnos is known for sending animals our way when he wants to reach out. This mostly being (for me at least) deer, elk, hawks, owls and ravens. To talk to him, please ward your room/area you are in first, making sure only he can be the one to come through. There are so many bad spirits out there who would love to impersonate a deity in order to latch on, and its best to protect yourself. You can communicate with him telepathically, or out loud. He does prefer to be outside, usually within a forest, but if this isn’t something you can do, that is fine! If you are unable to hear, use divination. Meditate often, not only to communicate, but to strengthen your gifts!

A Spell to Protect BLM Protesters

Although magic is no substitute for genuine activism, not all of us are able to attend protests, donate money, or even be outspoken about our support. This spell allows you to magically lend your energy to the cause.

What you will need: 

a sheet of white, red, or black paper

a black pen

a protection oil, a protective essential oil like myrrh or rosemary, or salt water

Performing the Ritual:

Write the words “Black Lives Matter” in the center of your paper. As you do so, visualize these words forming a connection between yourself and the protesters who are a part of the movement. 

Draw a circle around the words, moving your pen counterclockwise.

Say: “I cast protection around those protesting on behalf of the Black Lives Matter movement. They are under my protection from anyone who would do them harm or oppose their goals.”

If you work with sigils, runes, or some other kind of magical symbols, feel free to incorporate symbols for protection and power into your circle.

Take a little bit of your oil or salt water on the tip of your index finger and use it to anoint the circle at each of the four cardinal points (north, east, south, west), starting at the top of the circle and moving clockwise.

Say, “May this [oil/salt] protect those protesting on behalf of the Black Lives Matter movement. May it shield them from harm and surround them with a wall of protection and light.”

Focus your energy on the paper, and visualize the protests going on around the country right now. Focus on sending your energy to those protests to protect and support those participating.

I’m a Reiki practitioner, so when I did this spell I also incorporated a distance Reiki session to send Reiki energy to those protesting, and to add an extra layer of protection. If you practice any kind of energy work, that would be a beautiful thing to incorporate into this spell. 

If you worship any deities associated with justice, feel free to call on them during this ritual. 

Finally, if you have an altar, fold up your paper and place it on your altar once you finish the spell. Keeping the paper in a sacred space will allow it to keep receiving energy, and you can come back to pray for/send energy to protesters again in the future. 

What to do next

If you can, donate to organizations that contribute to the cause, like Black Visions Collective, Reclaim the Block, or a similar local organization. 

If you can’t donate, raise awareness on social media and in real life. (For my fellow white folks: try to focus on sharing stories from POC, rather than talking over them. Yes, we should use our privilege to raise awareness, but we should do that in a way that keeps the focus on those who are directly affected by the issue.)

IF YOU ARE ATTENDING A PROTEST, be smart and be safe. Keep your face covered, don’t talk to reporters, don’t take pictures (especially if you use iCloud!), stay the fuck away from anyone with a camera, and don’t post about it on social media.
