#SEVENTEEN In final assignment, we were required to use one single cardboard element as a continuous surface that folds and bends throughout the design. In addition to the cardboard we were required to select two translucent surface materials and one stick material. The design needed to occupy a total volume approximately 50.000 cm3 .

FIVE VOIDS

In this assignment, we were required to design five interrelated voids by using two surface elements and minimum ten linear elements. Firstly, I chose three design elements; corrugateed cardboard, wire mesh, wooden sticks. Then I made a continuous surface with corrugated cardboard to define five interrelated voids and I put wire mesh inside. Finally, I placed wooden sticks.

DOUBLE-SIDED RELIEF

In this assignment, we were required to make a composition representing the design concepts that we chose by using quadrilateral prisms folded out white cardboard or out of white styrofoam

Firstly, I create groups which include square,paralellogram and trapezoid. Then I rotate and mirror them to create my design from top view of both sides.

I choose the rhythm as my concept for one side. And I create rhythm with the squares. I choose dominance for the other side. I emphasize dominance by height differences of my elements.

DOMINANCE AND CONTRAST

In this assignment, we were required to make a 2D composition representing the concepts of dominance/contrast. Stripes of paper band should span from the cardboard's edge to edge.

I used paper bands in opposite directions to make contrast. And the triangles are dominant to whole design.

RHYTHM

In this assignment, we were required to make a 2D composition representing the concept of Rhythm using the letters as design elements. We were required to use at least five letters. We could scale, mirror and rotate the elements or groups.

In my assignment, I made two groups of letters. One group includes H and X. The other includes M,L,N. When I made a repetition and organization for implementing rhythm principle, I stretched, scaled, mirrored and rotated groups.

In my second work, I have better relief quality because I use lots of elements. Thus, the concept of hierarchy can be observed better again thanks to the number of elements. I use horizontal cylinders in order to give the sense of direction. I use the vertical ones to emphasize the hierarchy.

HIERARCHY (studiowork)

In this assignment, we were required to make a composition (a relief) representing the concept of hierarchy by using cylindrical shapes made out of newspaper and craft paper. The black cardboard could contribute to the design as a background element only through the vertical cylinders. Also, we were required to use only the text and the dimension of text is also an important design parameter that has an influence in design principles.

In my first assignment, I used cylinders in various radii and heights for hierarchy. I used them both vertically and horizontally

REPETITION AND VARIATION

In the last assignment of the theme Repetition and Variation, we were required to use the given shapes (any number/proportion of rectangular shapes, triangles, parallelograms and circles) as design elements to make a 2D design organization on a black cardboard. Firstly, I decided to make three groups to make variation in my design. I made each of groups by considering consistency, balance, variation for the usage of elements. After I made the groups, I scaled, rotated and mirrored them to make variation and repetition. I located them by considering the relations of sizes of group sides.

REPETITION AND VARIATION

In the second assignment of the theme Repetition and Variation, proportions of the shapes decided by the designer. We were required to use the given shapes (5 rectangles, 11 triangles, 7 parallelograms) as design elements, to make a 2-D design organization on a black cardboard. Firstly, I tried to make a group with design elements which were given, but I had difficulties about the numbers of them. Then I try to make the ground as the same shapes with my figure shapes.

REPETITION AND VARIATION

For this project, we were required to select three tonal areas from the abstract map that we have done and trace the outlines of these areas and generate three shapes. These three shapes would be the design elements. Then, we needed to repeat and vary these elements to come up with a design organization. The variation operations that we could apply include scaling, rotating and mirroring.

I tried to make a group from my design elements. I decided on a group. I tried to bringing together groups. I scaled and rotated groups while bringing them together

CREATING AN ABSTRACT MAP

For this project, firstly, we were required to walk around the faculty building to take several photographs and select one that contains all tonal values of grey. Then, we were required to print it out and create an abstract mapping of the image by using lines. Firstly, I took a photo which has all tonal values of grey and I printed it out by using the monochrome filter on my phone. Secondly, I decided how I should render the areas which have similar tonal values by using lines. I drew dark tones by using thick lines. In contrast, I used thin lines for lighter tones. I changed the distance between lines by considering tonal differences. Also, I changed orientation of the lines for remarking the tonal differences of areas.

The assigment sheet said that; You are required to walk around the faculty building. Observe and explore at least three volumes that you will select.

I started to look around and decided to select our first year studio because I am already familiar with there. Then, I observed the neighbour studios which have relations with our studio and I tried to explain these relations. Then, I thought the studios as defined volumes and showed the relations, volumes and circulations in my sketches.

These are two examples of rhythm in METU campus. In the first photo, the windows are placed according to an order and repeated regularly. In the second one, with the repetition of blocks of a building, rhythm was achieved.

This is an example of concept of dominance in METU campus. The curved surface is dominant to other planes of building.

This is an example of concept of contrast in METU campus. The concept is demonstrated by using horizontal and vertical rectangles, the contrast of directions.
