I could NEVER be one of those ppl complaining about the classic undertale characters being “irrelevant” in deltarune. I find the way deltarune highlights each of their flaws through their much more mundane lives so fascinating

Weve already talked about toriels questionable drunk habits enough this post isn’t about her. It’s about alphys actually.

I’m really invested in the way alphys is complacent in the whole “treating susie like an intimidating monster rather than a lonely kid who really needs someone in her corner rn” thing that most hometown residents seem to have. Like. Tgeres the very first time we see her talk to susie (which is in the meek small font, sorry that isn’t shown in the text dump lol) ⬇️she is literally intimidated by her own student!!!

And then later in chapter 2 we only see her being concerned about Kris’s wellbeing even though kris and susie skipped class. (ALSO the way she constantly reassures kris they’re not in trouble for literally sleeping through the entire day but very pointedly looks in susies direction once she talks about everyone being in trouble if no one gives up the chalk..!)

And then theres this part of ch4 that really confirms my suspicion that a lot of alphys being intimidated by susie seemingly isn’t that supported by susies actual actions toward her.

It’s exactly like when MK talks about the susie ball incident. She jumps to assuming the worst reaction from susie when susie is just. Enjoying some juice. And thinks juice combos are cool and fun.

AND now that ch4 gives us a Gerson/susie mentorship, we have confirmation that Gerson would absolutely be the teacher susie needed. Someone who believes in her, who will actually take initiative to help her learn and grow. But alphys evidently can’t replicate that bond. So much that susie refuses to approach alphys outside of school bc she thinks she’ll be banned from outside of school????

Like. The jump between stakes in alphys’s story between undertale and deltarune is huge. And yet it is still so interesting to see the same flaws that led to alphys’s issues with the amalgamates and all her lies to frisk manifesting in her role as a teacher, and failing to give her student in the most need of support what she really needs.
