So... I went to my therapist about rejection sensitive dysphoria and she said because it wasn't in the DSM 5 that it was probably perfectly normal and everyone feels bad about rejection but I know it can be normal to spend hours obsessing over little details of a conversation I had with someone and pointing out everything that I did wrong in my head and I don't know how to tell my therapist this :(

Yeah, unfortunately RSD isn’t something that you can be diagnosed with because it isn’t in the DSM-5, and although it’s a symptom of ADHD, it isn’t listed as one in there either. This is because, back when the diagnosing criteria was being made, the scientists decided that emotions were too hard measure, so they shouldn’t be listed as a symptom.

But it is a part of ADHD, even though it’s not officially recognised in medical journals. So your therapist can’t do anything about it, but they should still be able to tailor your therapy sessions to help with that, by talking to you in the same way they would talk to someone with anxiety. (Because RSD is an anxious response, it’s just specific to rejection.)

Try saying what you just told me, if you haven’t already - that you spend hours obsessing over things that happened each day and trying to think about how you could’ve done it better. She should talk to you as if you have anxiety, then, and the coping mechanisms and advice issued for anxiety should help you with RSD too.
